Dear Readers,

If there is a common subject to the picture books in this season’s Groundwood catalogue, it is friendship. From the odd-couple friendship of Buddy and Earl, to the mixed-species friendship in Grant and Tillie Go Walking, to the moving friendship between a boy and a girl in Two White Rabbits, our books this season demonstrate that friends often turn up when and where you aren’t expecting them.

Books are like that too. You don’t always find what you think you’re going to find when you go looking for one. There you are, searching illustrator websites hoping to find someone who draws cute animals, and next thing you know, you’ve acquired a full-length graphic novel. That’s how we found Dasha Tolstikova, the creator of A Year Without Mom, and we are very grateful for the serendipity that brought us to her.

We are also grateful for all our friends — the people who sell our books for us, the people who review them both in print and online, the librarians, teachers, parents and children who buy them, read them and love them. And of course — and most importantly — we are grateful for the authors and illustrators who took such care in making the wonderful books you will find in this catalogue.

BUDDY AND EARLWRITTEN BY MAUREEN FERGUSILLUSTRATED BY CAREY SOOKOCHEFF

Buddy does not know what is in the box that Meredith carries into the living room. But when the small, prickly creature says he is a pirate — and that Buddy is a pirate too — the two mis-matched friends are off on a grand adventure.

In this fi rst book in the Buddy and Earl series, a dog who likes to play by the rules meets a hedgehog who knows no limits. Their friendship is tender and loyal, and their adventures are funny and imagi-native. Maureen Fergus’s text is witty and under-stated, and Carey Sookocheff’s art emphasizes both the humor and the warmth of this odd and loveable animal couple.

When a new baby arrives, both the baby and the parents are in for a steep learning curve. In this book, born out of personal expe-rience, internationally renowned author/illus-trator Isol brings us a dual narrative and guide.

For babies, there’s a rich range of babies and all their functions to look at. From crying, to nursing, to peeing and pooing, to looking, to hearing, to deciding that this weird new world they’ve entered is worth staying in (because they finally recognize that in every grown-up they see a former baby), there are hours of fun and amusement, since babies love nothing better than looking at and talking about themselves.

For parents, this is a wonderful exploration of the new world this stranger-baby brings with them. Amusingly written, the text presents in a humorous, wry way all the facets of the new baby’s reality. A great gift for new parents both before and after baby is born.

In this poem addressed to a young child, author Caroline Adderson outlines the ten things a mother loves about her little one. From his scaly elbows and knees, all the way to his twitchy tail, every inch of this little “mon-ster” is itemized and admired.

This satisfyingly unconventional bedtime story will encourage children and parents to appreci-ate each other just a little bit more every time they read it.

Children’s love for animals and dis-guise come together as twelve speakers explain why they identify with different creatures such as a deer, beaver or moose. Delightful illustrations show the children wearing masks representing their chosen animal, while the few lines of text on each page work as a series of simple poems throughout the book.

In a brief author’s note, Danielle Daniel explains the importance of totem animals in Anishinaabe culture and how they can also act as animal guides for young children seeking to under-stand themselves and others.

A little girl and her father travel mostly on the roof of a train known as The Beast, but the little girl doesn’t know where they are going. She counts the animals by the road, the clouds in the sky, the stars. Sometimes she sees sol-diers. She sleeps, dreaming that she is always on the move, although sometimes they are forced to stop and her father has to earn more money before they can continue their journey.

As many thousands of people, especially chil-dren, in Mexico and Central America continue to make the arduous journey to the U.S. border in search of a better life, this is an important book that shows a young migrant’s perspective.

Grant Wood believed that to be a real artist, he had to live in Paris. But once he got there, he realized that to be a great painter he needed to return to the people and places — and even animals — that he knew and loved the best.

This is the sensitively imagined story of Grant and a cow named Tillie. Skillfully mixing fact with fiction, Monica Kulling’s text explores the making of an artist, while Sydney Smith’s illus-trations echo Grant Wood’s own techniques. The result is a gently wise picture book that will encourage young readers and artists to trust the love that is sometimes only found close to home.

Includes an author’s note that provides bio-graphical information about Grant Wood.

A wallet, a set of keys, a pair of glasses — these are some of the household objects that disappear and are fantastically reconstituted in Cybèle Young’s inventive new picture book. Minimal text conveys the magic of a world where even inanimate objects are constantly undergoing a process of growth, transforma-tion and change.

An introduction describing the frustration we feel when we lose something is followed by a catalogue of misplaced objects. Each item is shown first in its original form and then, on a gatefold spread, in the process of transforming into a marvelous and mysterious sea creature. At the very end of the book, we see these trans-formed objects in their new, watery habitat, a conclusion which will leave readers astonished by the distance they — like the lost objects themselves — have traveled.

Some Things I’ve Lost invites readers to consider the inevitability of change and the power of the imagination. On finishing the book, children and adults alike will look more closely at every-thing they have previously taken for granted.

In 1770, the slave Esperança Garcia bravely penned a letter to the governor of Piauí state, in Brazil, describing how she and her children were being mistreated and requesting permission to return to the farm where the rest of her family was living.

Before she wrote her letter, Esperança Garcia lived on a cotton farm run by Jesuit priests, where she learned to read and write — a rare opportunity for a woman, especially a slave. But one day she was separated from her hus-band and older children and taken with her two little ones to be a cook in the home of Cap-tain Antonio Vieira de Couto, where she and the other slaves were beaten and denied even the freedom to attend church.

In despair, Esperança Garcia wrote to the governor about her terrible situation, asking if she and her young children could return to the farm. She waited each day for a reply, never giving up hope. And although she never received an answer, she is remembered today for being the courageous slave who wrote the first letter of appeal in Afro-Brazilian Brazil.

Beautifully illustrated, this moving picture book provides a very personal look at the tragic history of slavery in the Americas.

A bitterly jealous brother, a cold-hearted husband, a monk who mistakes desire for piety, a fraudulent merchant who meets his match in a supernatural river otter, a samurai who makes the ultimate sacrifice — the motives underlying these traditional Japanese folktale characters are explored with haunting results.

Prompted by the sometimes illogical and per-plexing actions of folktale characters (Why doesn’t the wolf kill Little Red Riding Hood right away?), master storyteller Rui Umezawa revisits eight popular Japanese folktales, delv-ing beneath their sometimes baffling plot lines to highlight the psychological motivations behind the characters’ actions.

Tales of addiction, bravery, greed, abuse and control — these stories take their inspiration from the great Japanese storytelling traditions, as well as from Noh and Kabuki. Sometimes laced with ironic humor, sometimes truly hor-rifying, these stories of the strange and super-natural will appeal to readers of all ages, but they particularly speak to teenagers.

Evocative and haunting illustrations by the stunningly talented Mikiko Fujita add to the eerie beauty of this collection. A detailed after-word outlines the author’s storytelling approach and provides source material for each tale.

In the town of Leamington, Ontario, a seventeen-year-old boy is suddenly stricken by a schizophrenic episode and wakes up in hospital. The boy’s name is Calvin, and he is plagued by hallucinations.

As the hallucinations persist, Calvin comes to believe that the answer lies in performing one grand and incredible gesture. And so he decides to walk across Lake Erie. In January. The temperatures have been below freezing for weeks. The ice should hold . . .

The lake, it turns out, is more marvelous, and more treacherous, than Calvin had ever imagined — populated by abandoned cars (joy ride!), ice-fishing eccentrics, psychokiller snow beings, and a not-so-mythical sea witch named Jenny Greenteeth. Not to mention the man-eating tiger that looms just out of his sight lines as he treks.

But the biggest surprise of all is that Calvin finds himself accompanied by Susie, the girl of his dreams. Or is it his dreams that have con-jured up Susie?

Part romance, part adventure story, part quest novel, Martine Leavitt brings her inimitable gentle wit, humor and compassion to a story about a teenaged boy struggling to gain con-trol of his own mind and destiny.

Charlotte’s life is changed forever when her parents’ marriage breaks up, and Charlotte has to leave her beloved house and her old life behind. Then two very different boys cross her path, and a new emotion creeps into her sadness and anger — an emotion that is both confusing and sweet.

Charlotte falls in love with Carlo, tries to stay friends with tough-guy Sulzer and faces the jealousy of the cool-girl clique at school. As she watches her parents cope, sometimes haplessly, with changes in their own personal lives, and as she deals with a new baby brother, a potential stepfather and unexpected house moves, she realizes that love is a messy and risky business.

If grownups can make such a hash of it, how on earth can a fifteen-year-old cope?

But Charlotte does cope, magnificently, as she tries to figure out how to be a big sister, a daughter, a friend, a good person. And in the end she finds the courage to take responsibility for her own actions, and sets off to be with the boy she loves.

THE OUTSIDE CIRCLEPATTI LaBOUCANE-BENSONART BY KELLY MELLINGS

In this important graphic novel, two Aborigi-nal brothers surrounded by poverty, drug abuse and gang violence try to overcome centuries of historic trauma in very different ways to bring about positive change in their lives.

Pete, a young Aboriginal man wrapped up in gang vio-lence, lives with his younger brother, Joey, and his mother, who is a heroin addict. One night, Pete and his mother’s boyfriend, Dennis, get into a big fight, which sends Den-nis to the morgue and Pete to jail. Initially, Pete keeps up ties to his crew, until a jail brawl forces him to realize the negative influence he has become on Joey and encourages him to begin a process of rehabilitation through a tradi-tional Native healing circle.

Powerful, courageous and deeply moving, The Outside Circle is drawn from the author’s twenty years of work and research on healing and reconciliation of gang-affiliated or incarcerated Aboriginal men.

PATTI LaBOUCANE-BENSON is a Métis woman and the Director of Research, Training and Communication at Native Counselling Services of Alberta (NCSA).

KELLY MELLINGS is an award-winning art director, illustrator and designer.
