Dear Readers and Friends,

One of the things we look forward to each season is the chance to bring new authors and illustrators to our list. We treasure the relationships we have with those people who have published with us for many years, and it is always a thrill to add newcomers to that group.

This season we have a few creators who are completely new to the world of children’s books, as well as some who are venturing into new genres. I hope you will give a warm welcome to all our new faces:

• Acree Graham Macam and Natalie Nelson, author and illustrator of The King of the Birds • Kit Peel, author of Snow Summer • Jane Ozkowski, author of Watching Traffic • John Sobol, author of Friend or Foe?, with illustrations by Dasha Tolstikova • Sandra V. Feder, author of The Moon Inside, with illustrations by Aimée Sicuro • Julianna Swaney, who provided illustrations for Book Uncle and Me, a chapter book by Uma Krishnaswami

Happy reading! And, as always, I will be interested to hear your thoughts. Please feel free to email me at the address below.

Sheila Barry, Publisher Groundwood Books [email protected]

In this picture book, inspired by the life of Flannery O’Connor, a young fan of fowl brings home a peacock to be the king of her collection, but he refuses to show off his colorful tail. The girl goes to great lengths to encourage the peacock to display his plumage — she throws him a party, lets him play in the fig tree, feeds him flowers and stages a parade — all to no avail.

Then she finally stumbles on the perfect solu-tion. When she introduces the queen of the birds — a peahen — to her collection, the pea-cock immediately displays his glorious shim-mering tail.

This delightful story, full of humor and heart, celebrates the legacy of a great American writer.

Includes a note about Flannery O’Connor.

Yellow is Ella’s favorite color — she loves the bright, sunny daytime. But every night, as darkness falls, she becomes afraid. Her mother encourages her to look at the soft glow of the moon and fireflies dancing in the night. Ella listens to the chirping of crickets and the gentle rustling of the wind as she grad-ually realizes that nighttime can be something to look forward to rather than something to fear.

With sweet illustrations by Aimée Sicuro, this story will inspire parents and children to wel-come the peaceful nature of nighttime into their homes and hearts.

Mom’s friend Mrs. Cunningham is coming for a visit, and she’s bringing her baby! While Buddy tries to explain the ins and outs of babydom to Earl, neither of them is prepared for the chaos the small and adorable creature brings with him.

When the baby manages to escape from his cage — which Buddy gently suggests is really just a playpen — it’s up to our favorite odd cou-ple to save the day.

This third title in the critically acclaimed Bud-dy and Earl series follows a dog who likes to play by the rules and a hedgehog who knows no limits on another fun adventure in deduc-tive reasoning and imaginative play.

When a teacher asks the children in her class to think about what makes their families special, the answers are all different in many ways — but the same in the one way that matters most of all.

One child is worried that her family is just too different to explain, but listens as her class-mates talk about what makes their families special. One is raised by a grandmother, and another has two dads. One has many stepsib-lings, and another has a new baby sibling.

As her classmates describe who they live with and who loves them — family of every shape, size and every kind of relation — the child realizes that as long as her family is full of car-ing people, it is special.

A warm and whimsical look at many types of families written by award-winning author Sara O’Leary, with quirky and sweet illustrations by Qin Leng.

Bear loves his forest home, but some-times he gets lonely. It’s hard being the biggest animal around. As the days grow shorter and autumn turns to winter, Bear springs into ac-tion and comes up with a festive plan to make friends with all the other forest creatures.

Bear makes invitations for the other animals, inviting them to a winter party in his den. He decorates his home and lights a roaring fire and bakes delicious treats. But as the night grows dark, Bear worries that his forest neigh-bors may be too frightened to come. Just when he is about to give up hope, Bear spots Deer peeking out from behind a tree…

Written by award-winning author Deborah Hodge, Bear’s Winter Party is brought to life with exuberant illustrations by Lisa Cinar. Together they have created a story that is at once timeless, tender and true.

“A lonely mouse lived in a small house beside a great palace. In the great palace lived a cat.”

Each night the mouse gazes up at the cat in the palace tower. Is the cat my friend? he wonders. Determined to find out, he bravely climbs all the way up to the tower, where the cat sits on the windowsill.

“Hello, are you friend or foe?” he squeaks.

This simple story by John Sobol has a surpris-ing outcome, giving young readers a chance to draw their own conclusions. It is perfectly complemented by Dasha Tolstikova’s subtle yet striking illustrations.

ROOSTER / GALLOWRITTEN BY JORGE LUJÁNILLUSTRATED BY MANUEL MONROYTRANSLATED BY ELISA AMADO

The song of the rooster draws forth the universe and gives way to the dance of beings and objects as day draws its first brilliant breath. Written in Spanish and English, this book is so supremely simple that a baby can delight in it, and yet so complex that an adult reader can find joy in the poem and beautiful images over and over again.

Jorge Luján dreamed this myth and, when he wrote it, understood that the rooster is the poet of the day. Manuel Monroy dipped his pen in the ink of the night and, when he withdrew it, found it was spangled with stars.

JORGE LUJÁN is an author, poet and musician who has published forty-two books and seven CDs and has been nominated three times for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Jorge lives in Mexico City.

MANUEL MONROY has won many awards and has exhibited his art in Mexico, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Italy, Japan and the Netherlands. Manuel lives in Mexico City.

Why are young people leaving their country to walk to the United States to seek a new, safe home? Over 100,000 such children have left Central America. This book of poetry helps us to understand why and what it is like to be them.

This powerful book by award-winning Salva-doran poet Jorge Argueta describes the terrible process that leads young people to undertake the extreme hardships and risks involved in the journey to what they hope will be a new life of safety and opportunity. A refugee from El Salvador’s war in the eighties, Argueta was born to explain the tragic choice confronting young Central Americans today, who are say-ing goodbye to everything they know because they fear for their lives. This book brings home their situation and will help young people who are living in safety to understand those who are not.

Compelling, timely and eloquent, this book is beautifully illustrated by master artist Alfonso Ruano who also illustrated The Composition, considered one of the 100 Greatest Books for Kids by Scholastic’s Parent and Child Magazine.

On a trip to Japan in 1978, Milly Zantow noticed that people were putting little bundles out on the street each morning. They were re-cycling. When she returned to Sauk City, Wis-consin, she discovered that her town’s landfill was nearing capacity, and that plastic made up a large part of the garbage. No one was recy-cling plastics. Milly decided to figure out how.

Milly and a friend established E-Z Recycling. They worked with local school children and their community, and they helped other com-munities start their own recycling programs. But Milly knew that the large-scale recycling of plastics would never work unless people could easily identify the seven different types. She came up with the idea of placing an iden-tifying number in the little recycling triangle, which has become the international standard.

Milly’s story is a glimpse into the early days of the recycling movement and shows how, thanks to her determination, hard work and community-building, huge changes took place, spreading rapidly across North America.

For hundreds of thousands of years great auks thrived in the icy seas of the North Atlantic, bobbing on the waves, diving for fish and struggling up onto rocky shores to mate and hatch their fluffy chicks. But by 1844, not a single one of these magnificent birds was alive.

In this stunningly illustrated non-fiction pic-ture book, Jan Thornhill tells the tragic story of these birds that “weighed as much as a sack of potatoes.” Their demise came about in part because of their anatomy. They could swim swiftly underwater, but their small wings meant they couldn’t fly and their feet were so far back on their bodies, they couldn’t walk very well. Still the birds managed to escape their preda-tors much of the time … until humans became seafarers.

Although undeniably tragic, the final demise of the great auk led to the birth of the conser-vation movement.

Then Yasmin remembers a story that Book Uncle selected for her. It’s an old folktale about a flock of doves trapped in a hunter’s net. The birds realize that if they all flap their wings at the same time, they can lift the net and fly to safety. And Yasmin has friends who care about what goes on in their community.

And so the children get to work, launching a campaign to make sure the voices of the com-munity are heard.

Massive climate change has caused a winter that will not thaw, and it seems that the forces of nature have turned on humanity itself. But in the sleepy British village of Pate-ley, one special girl may hold the key to the earth’s survival.

Wyn, an orphan, has always known that she is different. Unable to feel the biting cold of wind and snow of Pateley’s endless winter, she does what she can to blend in. But when mysterious figures start to appear in the village, insisting that she may have the power to restore order to the natural world, Wyn must look deep inside herself to face the secrets of her past that she has kept hidden even from herself.

From debut author Kit Peel, Snow Summer is an immersive fantasy novel that expertly con-veys the beauty of the natural world and its conflict with human development. A powerful allegory for climate change and global warm-ing, it is nevertheless a timeless story, reminis-cent of classics of the genre.

Emily has finally finished high school in the small town where she has lived her whole life. At last, she thinks, her adult life can begin.

But what if you have no idea what you want your new life to look like? What then?

While Lincoln gets ready to go backpacking in Australia, Melissa packs for university on the east coast, and a new guy named Tyler provides welcome distraction, Emily wonders whether she will end up working forever at Pamela’s Country Catering, cutting the crusts off party sandwiches and stuffing mushrooms. Is this her future? Being known forever as the local girl whose mother abandoned her in the worst way possible all those years ago?

With poetic prose and a keen eye for the quirks and ironies of small-town life, Jane Ozkowski captures the bittersweet uncertainty of that weird, unreal summer after high school — a time that is full of possibility and completely terrifying at the same time.

For Charlotte, university life is better than she’d ever dreamed — a sophisti-cated and generous roommate, the camaraderie of dorm living, parties, clubs and boyfriends. Most of all, Charlotte is exposed to new ideas, and in 1981 Ghana, this may be the most excit-ing — and most dangerous — adventure of all.

At first Charlotte basks in her wonderful new freedom, especially being out of the watchful eye of her controlling and opinionated father. But Ghana is fraught with a history of conflict. And in the middle of her freshman year, the government is overthrown, and three judges are abducted and murdered. As political forces try to mobilize students to advance their own agendas, Charlotte is drawn into the world of student politics.

“The struggle continues! Aluta! Aluta conti-nua!” she shouts, rallying the crowd with the slogan of the oppressed. But her love of the spotlight puts her in the public eye. And when she is entrusted with a mysterious package of documents, she suddenly realizes she may be in real danger.
