Heart Beat

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ; The Christian season of Lent is a time when we re-establish “the main thing, as the main thing.” The life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is what the Christian faith is built upon. In a world of injustice, God once and for all tipped the scales in favor of hope. And He did it by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the debt we owed for our sin. Though Christ’s sacrifice, our past is pardoned and our future is secure. And since we have been made right with God, we have peace with God, peace with our-selves, and peace with one another. When you accept Jesus Christ as Savior and live for Him as Lord, you are guaranteed that your rebellion will be filtered through, hidden in, and screened out by the sacrifice of Jesus.

This gives you hope, because: You are a member of His kingdom. You have been adopted. You have access to God at any moment. You are a part of His royal priesthood. You will never be abandoned. You have an imperishable inheritance. You are a partner with Christ in life, in privilege, and in service. See you in worship and in ministry during Lent. See you Sunday, March 18th at the 11:00 a.m. combined service for “The Congregational Building Meeting”. Pastor Wayne

TEACHER’S CORNER – by Paul Sims revelation scripture covenant-maker humankind sin grace salvation Jesus atonement confession faith Holy Spirit Trinity people of God church sacraments worship Christian Life sanctification christian hope judgment RESURRECTION eternal life

Why is the phrase “I believe in the resurrection of the body” in the Apostle’s creed? This phrase reflects the early church’s conviction about the worth of the body and its confidence in the completeness of the divine triumph. The body may be dust, but it carries the breath of God. The Old Testament teaches us that we are at once one with God and one with the earth. The breath of God sanctifies the body. The consummation of all things will include the body. What is the most striking evidence of the worth of the human body? God chose to become flesh in a normal human body and to live among us. Jesus did not teach the multitudes to spiritualize their needs, to be philosophical about them – he fed the hungry and healed the sick. He affirmed the worth of the body. Many in the ancient world believed that the physical was evil and unlovely and that the spiritual was good and perfect (Gnosticism, still practiced today). In the Apostle’s Creed, the early church said that not only was the body not evil, but so good, so divinely ordained, that it would survive death. Jesus was resurrected in body. When he appeared to his disciples, they were able to touch him, and he ate with them (Luke 24:36-43). His resurrection was physical. Christian doctrine insists that the body and soul need each other. How can we speak respectfully of the gifts and talents God gives us and at the same time not respect the body in which those gifts and talents are expressed? See 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 and Romans 12:1. “Since the Holy Spirit [dwells] in the body, and the body [is] of such quality as to escape death’s grasp, then the body [is] decidedly more than a receptacle for the soul. The body [has] honor in its own right, and extraordinary worth through the value of the soul dwelling within it. Not only [does] the soul dwell there; the soul and body were united

by the Creator. To touch one is to touch the other”

– J. Ellsworth Kalas

Because we believe in the resurrection of the body, we must treat our bodies as a sacred gift from God and as a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.

Registration

Registration is now open to the public. We still have a couple of openings in the Threes class. If you know of anyone who is interested in a half day preschool setting for that age (they must be 3 before August 31), please have them contact Mrs. Pat at the Preschool by calling (773-2606) and leaving a message. You

may also refer them to our church website. Website

Please check out the Preschool tab on the church website. Right now we have general information, but we will be expanding our portion of the website in the future. We have already had two phone calls regarding

the Preschool from persons who were looking for preschools through church websites. One of those families will be joining us next year.

Thank You We would like to thank Michelle Ansede of Ansede Animal Hospital for coming to the preschool to discuss

‘doggy dental health’ with the children during Dental Health Week in February. Not only did we learn about caring for our pets, but were treated to a few tricks as well by their dog, Tawny. The Ansedes’ two sons were former students at our preschool. She willingly returns each year to share her knowledge with our

children.

The preschool children and staff really appreciate the new mulch on the church playground. It looks great and we feel a lot safer! Thank you to the UMW, Joy Club, and Ken and Rita Sumner for donations that

went towards the purchase of the mulch. Thank you also to Bob Alexander, Jeff Cope, Claude Jenkins, Jay Johnston, Dayton Martin, Toby McNeill, and Jaime Tripp for helping to spread the mulch. If we have

left anyone out, we apologize and want you to know how much we appreciate your help.

We appreciate donations which have been made to the Christopher Bage Wells Scholarship Fund. We have two children attending with the help of those funds and four other families who could greatly benefit from those funds if we had enough to share with them. Please consider donations to this much needed fund. We will not turn away current students due to those families’ recent financial hardships. Thank you for your support! Mrs. Pat, Director

The United Methodist Men have decided to forego the chili cook-off this year and instead hold a

fundraiser in conjunction with the Fall Festival. In addition to our usual on-site foods, we will be offering to-go items such as chili, venison stew, chicken & dumplings and another as-yet undetermined items. We

will be selling these in quart containers, suitable for freezing if desired. More to come later. We will have our regular monthly meeting on Thursday, March 15th at 6:00 p.m. We also meet every Thursday morning at 6:00 a.m. for breakfast and a Bible Study. Please join us. All men are invited.

First I want to thank Zack Woody for all his work to organize the Appalachain Service Project. We had several requests to do this project in 2012 so I had gathered some information, and then one of those little miracles happened and Zack announced he was spearheading this mission! The Missions Committee had not met to discuss how to work this into the extensive Missions calendar and who could "chair" this activity and I was worried it might get pushed back to 2013. So again, thanks Zack! There are several missions on the horizon, the first major one is the Relay for Life. Tracey Green is organizing our booths, our team and all the activities to go along with this extremely important fundraiser. So many of us at Saint Andrews have been touched in some way by cancer -- we need to do everything possible to help find a cure or better treatments. Please sign up now for the SAUMC team - contact Tracey for more information. Visit our new website to keep up to date on all your opportunities to get involved in your church!

The Building Committee met on February 19 and reviewed the latest version of the site improvement plan drawn by Patrick Perez. The committee expressed appreciation to Patrick for giving so much of his time and experience to develop the necessary documents for this project. Pat Sheffield, Preschool Director, asked the committee to consider relocating the children’s area to the south end of the building. The committee approved this request. The sub-committee that was previously appointed to plan a Building Program presentation for the entire congregation gave a report. The Congregational Building Meeting will be held during the 11:00 a.m. worship service on March 18. This will be a combined service. There will be no early worship service on this day. The entire congregation is encouraged to attend and ask any questions or raise any concerns you may have about the proposed new building. A committee composed of Norman Willey, Patrick Perez, Pastor Wayne, Phil Pleasant and Vince Revels was appointed to develop a schedule for the Building Program. As of February 19, we have received $437,485 or 42.668% of the $1,025,310 pledged in May, 2010 for the new building. We have also received $32,684 in non-pledged gifts. The next meeting of the Building Committee is scheduled for Sunday, March 4 at 5:30 pm in the Bible classroom and is open to all members of the congregation. Minutes of the Building Committee meetings are on file in the office of Kim Tingler and are available for review by Saint Andrews members. Thank you for your support, patience, understanding and encouragement in working through the Building Plan Process. Please share your thoughts and concerns about the work of the Building Committee with Vince Revels, Chair of the Building Committee.

Saint Andrews is in need of a few good men and women to serve as bus drivers. The need for using the bus is growing and with that the need for additional drivers. All that is required is to be over 21, have a basic knowledge of the bus and to pass a written and driving test to obtain a CDL license with a “P” endorsement. We will assist you with all the training and preparation. If you have an interest serving in this ministry or just some questions, please see Rich Lovegreen or Don Aldridge.

ST ANDREWS’ ANNUAL CAMPING TRIP

Our annual camping trip will be held at Umstead State Park on the weekend of June 1st. There is something for everyone. Activities range from hiking and fishing, to corn hole, horseshoes and volleyball to just sitting and relaxing. There will be board games and crafts, lots of music and good food. And you won’t want to miss the S’mores cooked over the campfire on Saturday night. The weekend will conclude with a worship service by the lake on Sunday morning followed by brunch in the Mess Hall. Sleeping accommodations include cots with mattresses and there is even indoor plumbing and hot showers! This is a great opportunity to fellowship in a beautiful, relaxing environment. We would love to fill all 150 beds in the campsite but even if you can’t stay for both nights, plan to come for one night or at least for the day on Saturday. You will be glad you did. Any questions contact Dave or Nancy Woodward at 772-2967 or [email protected]. Look for registration information to be available next week.

Have you ever looked at a sound studio and wondered “What do all of those knobs and buttons do?” Or have you been at a concert and watched the sound person mixing the music for the concert and thought “How do they do that?” Well, this is your chance to learn about how they do that and what all those knobs and stuff do. The Audio/Visual team is praising God for the recent additions to our A/V equipment and we are eager to get to the place where we can utilize the equipment in a tangible way to glorify the Lord. Along with this new technology, comes a need for additional help on a weekly basis in the A/V sound room during our worship services. All necessary training will be provided and you will not be left alone to operate the equipment until you say you are ready. This responsibility is not to be taken lightly and the A/V team takes their job seriously. We currently desire to start utilizing the new camera equipment on a regular basis for both services and would like to start utilizing some Power Point presentations for the 11:00 a.m. worship service. If you would like to learn about how all of this equipment works, even without a firm commitment to working in the sound booth every weekend, please come and attend one of the training sessions that we are going to hold. Ray LaCroix , Doug Harwood and Ben Garner will be offering training sessions to all who desire to learn all or part of what goes on in the sound booth. Please contact Ray LaCroix at 919-749-0282 or e-mail me at [email protected] for more information and to schedule a training session. Due to the limited amount of room inside the sound room, classes will be limited to 2 or 3 people at a time. I am available almost any evening to meet and offer some training, so call or e-mail me and let’s schedule a session soon. Tuesday evening is the Sonrise Praise Team practice and this is always a good opportunity to learn a lot about sound reinforcement.

God bless you for desire to serve. Ray LaCroix

It’s hard to believe, but it’s time to start thinking about VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!!!!

The dates for this year’s VBS are August 5-9 and as we usually do, we will meet from 6:00-8:15 pm. The curriculum for this year is Group Publishing’s Sonrise National Park where we will find the

“True Power of Jesus’ Promises”. VBS is a ministry for children age 4 (by the fall) through Grade 5 (just completed). We will need

LOTS of adult support and we will have our first meeting for VBS volunteers at the end of March so please pray about your involvement in VBS 2012 and look for details on Church Chat and Guppies

and Tweens emails. Thank you for your support as we look forward to a blessed 2012 as these young Christians seek to

grow in their walk with Christ. May God continue to bless each of you - the family of God worshipping as the family of St. Andrews.

In Christian love, Sally

What are Guppies and Tweens??? As part of our Children’s Ministry program, St. Andrews has two groups for fellowship. Guppies are children between the ages of 4 and First Grade and Tweens are in Second through Fifth Grade. In

addition, the 45s are our fourth and fifth graders who will meet for special events and extended Tweens sessions. We meet on Sunday evenings for fellowship and music, and supper is provided by

parent volunteers. We also have a children’s worship time during morning worship which we call W.O.W.

(Worship-Our Way) We look forward to welcoming new members to these groups and hope that children who are in this

age range will join us as we work together to Serve Praise And Grow In Christ!

We continue to covet the prayers of our church family, as these youngest Christians seek to grow in their relationship with Christ through

fellowship, service and worship.

Peace, in Christ, Sally

Counselor’s blahba …

Time is slowly ticking away! We are a few months away from several milestones in your life.

Some of you are graduating. Some of you are moving up into High School. Some of you will be

getting your driver’s license and All of you will be one step closer to becoming an adult. Being an

adult is fun! You get to stay up late, eat whatever you want, go wherever you want, hang out with

whoever you want and be who you want to be! This is called freewill! God gives us the choice of

who we want to become but with this choice comes consequences. Staying up late could make you

late for work. Eating whatever you want could lead to poor health. Going wherever you want

could get you lost and hanging out with the wrong people could get you into major

trouble…..sound familiar? Being an adult is not much different than being a teenager so it would

be wise to start making good choices now instead of facing the consequences later!
