Senior Skip Day, April 23: Seniors were excited to officially begin the countdown days until graduation with Senior “Skip” Retreat on Mount Hood. Plans were also to go to Kah-Nee-Ta, however after staying up all night, playing games, eating and just talking, the students decided to hang out and rest before heading back to Portland.

ISP Family Potluck, Honoring all International Seniors, May 9: This annual event to bring the year to a close by honoring al Host Families, International Students, and to say goodbye to the Seniors. One graduate remarked “I have enjoyed my high school life here at Portland Christian. I have been going to church with my host family and joined the worship team. I started thinking like a Christian all the time and I have relied on God through all the senior things like TOEFL, SAT and Senior Thesis. Thanks to everyone for loving and caring for me and thanks to God who gave me an opportunity to be here and make great memories.”

Awards Chapel May 18: While all students are honored at this event, the seniors are recognized in all categories of subject matter awards. Out of 33 students, 22 received Honor Cord Awards (3.5 and above), 12 received Presidential Awards (3.9 and above), 15 received the Jeanne Lampi Scholar Diplo-ma, 7 were inducted into the Mathematics Honor Society, and 9 Seniors had attended 12 or more years of Christian School.

Senior Mother’s Luncheon, May 23:At 1:10 pm all seniors had set their tables, received final instructions, and were dressed and ready to greet their guests. Moms and guests were escorted in, served punch, mints and nuts, and introduced to all the others at her table. By 1:30 most guests had arrived and the event began. Moms were welcomed and prayed for by Emily B. and Leah, Marie gave them a special word of encouragement and the ladies were toasted, followed by a special piano solo played in their honor by Anthony. Following luncheon, served formally by the seniors, the vocal trio of Suzanne, Krystian and Jensyn shared a special song. Our speaker, Mrs. Lampi, focused on “Are We There Yet?”, challenging Moms and all of us to remember graduation is not the end of our journey. Life can be so very full, and as believers we won’t arrive until the day we see Jesus face to face.

Senior Thesis, May 2: Proposed in 1999 by the department heads, the Senior Thesis is considered by some, the capstone of a student’s education at Portland Christian. Students select a topic, generally of current interest, and one on which many may have a strong opinion. The topic is researched in the literature, talked through with proponents and opponents, and visits made on location, and then presented in a well-written document. Students are then required to make an oral defense of their position. As one student remarked, “This research, brought together in one project, all I ever learned about research, writing, debating, seeing both sides of an argument, asking thought provoking questions and publically defending my position.”

Senior Farewell Chapel June 1: The school, including teachers, staff and parents were able to say “good-bye” to the class of 2017 at a Farewell Assembly on Thursday, the 1st of June.

Senior Night, June 2: This rather “intimate” night included all students and their families. Students are the entire focus of the evening with musical performances, recognition of parents, recognition of awardees, a senior slide show presented by Jensyn Lown, and ending with a brief message and prayer for the graduates by Pastor Duckett. For the first time, the seniors also presented their Senior Memory Boards which were also on display at Graduation.

SUMMER/FALL 3

ISP Parents Brunch, June 2: Each year, a Brunch is held prior to graduation to honor all International Students and their parents, many of whom fly in for this special event in the lives of their children. A slide show was prepared by the Interna-tional Department, flowers were presented by the Alumni, and gifts were exchanged by all. Each student in excellent English, introduced every family member at the brunch. Proud parents, aunts, cousins, uncles, etc. were snapping pictures all over the room. Then everyone was off to graduation.

Commencement June 3: At 1:00 pm sharp, the processional of Board Members, Staff and Faculty and Honored Guests from the Classes of 1951- 1967 began. As the pianist struck the first chord, slowly and proudly, 33 seniors marched in to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance and took their places amidst cameras flashing around the auditorium. Board of Trustees Chair, Murray Heidebrecht, welcomed all, opened in prayer and read I Peter 1:7. Jeanne Lampi recognized her very first graduating class, the Class of 1967, and presented the J. Robert Barber Memorial Choir Scholarship. Following the Commencement Speaker, Rachel Humphrey, and the Presentation of Diplomas by Principal Sherri James, Alumni were invited to join the choir in their final performance of the year singing the “I AM”.

In honor of the 70th Anniversary of the opening of Portland Christian Schools, the Video, OUR STORY, prepared by senior Jensyn Lown was shown. This video featured interviews and stories from PCH Alumni who also had children and grandchil-dren in the Class of 2017. First interviewed was Evvie Corkum 1953 Boys. She told of the early days when her father and others founded the school. Evvie’s daughter, Stephanie 1985 and grandson, Anthony DeLucia of the Class of 2017, also spoke. Barbara Dick 1968 Prindle, her daughter, Tiffany Prindle 1998 Chinchilla, and granddaughter, Elaina 2017 shared. Dr. Michelle Gordon 1995 Lown and her daughter, Jensyn, told of the Lord’s blessings at PCH. Moriah Madson 2017, daughter of Michele Brown 1982 Madson (now with the Lord), was the fourth child of an Alumnus to graduate in the Class of 2017.

(Please note that both the video and the narrative, OUR STORY can be seen and read on the Portland Christian website.)

Minds renewed by God’s Word, lead to

TRANSFORMED LIVES.

I hear so many stories from PCS Alumni sharing how the years spent at Portland Christian impacted their lives. Of course, some

stories are not as pleasant as I’d like to hear, but most are wonderfully encouraging. At a recent class reunion, one member remarked that out of a class of 34, only one couple had been divorced. They attributed this to strong families and the Godly teaching received at Portland Christian. At another reunion, a wonderful time of testimoni-als took place ending with prayer for the fami-lies of classmates gone on to be with the Lord, prayer for those from their class with chronic illnesses and prayer for the school. Whether friends, favorite teachers and classes, sports, art or drama, the majority of PCH Alumni share that what they learned at Portland Christian has had a significant impact on shaping their thinking and their future.

In the last issue of the REALS, it was announced the Spring 2017 issue would be the last printed edition. Many called, spoke up at summer reunions or sent emails. The message was the same. “I don’t have the time to read it all at once.” “I like to keep a printed copy with me and read it as time permits.” “I like to share the REALS with others.” “Because of the REALS, I have been able to introduce others to PCS.” “I’m an Alumnus. Because of the REALS, my children are now at

the school.”

Thank you. We heard you. We made the deci-sion to continue printing and mailing the maga-zine. However, we have made some adjustments to maximize resources, thus we have reduced the number of pages per issue, and will mail one copy to each address in the Alumni data base. Additional copies are available at the high school office or the magazine can be read on line. Thank you for your continued prayers and sup-port of Portland Christian Schools.

J. Robert Barber Memorial Choir Scholarship

On January 17, 2011, at the age of 88, Mr. Barber went home to be with the Lord. As a tribute to this man, a perpetual choir scholarship has been established at Portland Christian High School in Mr. Bar-ber’s name. Each year a deserving senior choir student is to be the recipient of this award. We are pleased that Bailey Duckett, an out-standing choir student, is the seventh recipient of the 2017 J. Robert Barber Memorial Choir Scholarship.

Bailey is attending William Jessup University, California, majoring in Kinesiology/Music. We are grateful that Mr. Barber’s legacy of great choral music will always continue at Portland Christian High School.

SUMMER/FALL 2017 5

The following contains excerpts from a much longer piece written by a PCES mother who deeply appreciates Portland Christian Schools.“I have such adoration for PCS. I remember walking with Mrs. Antal to see the teacher we would have if I enrolled. Upon walking into Miss Malou’s class and telling her about our experience at the daycare and the rejection from the referred school, I felt her empathy for me. ….. I remember it like it was yesterday, she was so kind, understanding, and attentive……. My child did not want to leave this awesome class. All his senses were being touched and it was overwhelming to see. I cried and thank God for taking me down Market St. because I would have never found PCES.”

“After enrolling my son and coming to the classroom, I was totally taken aback with the diversity of the school and each class room. That was the FIRST thing I noticed. You see, I am African American woman and I pay close attention to that……..But, when I got to Portland Christian, I was so excited to see diversity. I am so grateful, for what I feel is, the deliberate thought and care that goes into the diversification of the classes at PCS …. My child learning so much and feeling like he belongs……PCS is HIS school. That is what makes me the happi-est...... I cannot say enough or show how thankful I am for this school and its staff. I thank God for sending me down that street. I used to cry at all the events, I even cried at my first parent night while listing to Rhonda…. I just feel like this environment is where he is supposed to be because God wanted us here….God has placed a hedge of protection around my child and me via PCS. He has lifted my fear of prejudice and inequality upon my child and I feel a hug from God every time I am on the elementary campus. Thank you all for all you do, you have made our time at PCS a truly incredible experience.”

On behalf of the Board, I want to provide you with a brief update on important changes to our school. I’m sure that many of you have learned about the recent reduction in operating staff that included Laurie Fowlkes (Director of Development) and Rebecca Smillie (Executive Assistant). We are extremely grateful for their contribu-tions. They will be greatly missed by the staff and society. While our Alumni Director, Jeanne Lampi, will continue in her role, it will be in a reduced capacity. These changes are the result of some difficult decisions about the number of people needed to achieve our educa-tional goals and fulfill our mission.

At the same time, we know that the Lord always provides for His work in His way with His people. Volunteers have always been key to the activities of the Portland Christian Alumni Association. Mov-ing forward, we will rely on the strength of this group more than

ever. An example of this spirit in action is Marsha Grabinger (1961) who has graciously offered to donate her graphic design skills to help put the REALS magazine together along with Andrew Burnett of Good Impressions Publishing who is generously doing our print-ing and mailing. It is our goal to produce 2 issues this year.

We stand by you in the belief that Portland Christian is a great school, blessed with talented and passionate teachers, staff, and administrators who provide students with an excellent education in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our vision to grow leaders in mind and spirit.

We appreciate your prayers and are open to answering any questions you might have for us.

newsJunior/Senior HighWith the beginning of a new school year comes a student’s excitement of being with friends, competing in athletics, performing on the stage, and serving others in leadership. As PCS staff, it is our desire and the mission of the school to be in-strumental in the transformation of student’s lives through the renewing of their minds. What is being done at Portland Christian Jr/Sr High School to bring about transformation among the student body? We are committed to developing a cul-ture of servant leadership. The school is a place where students see examples of this within the staff, hear from Christian leaders from our community, and are provided opportunities to serve others; all in obedience to God’s will for our lives. We are committed to “Growing leaders in mind and spirit” (PCS Vision) and doing so as it is written in Matthew 20:27-28 (MSG), “Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not be served—and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage.” God gives us a clear example of this in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), and tells us to ”Go and do likewise”.

Those among our alumni and supporters who are practicing servant leadership in their career or ministry, and are interested in speaking to students, are encour-aged to contact the PCHS office to get in contact with our team.

Please call Principal James at 503-256-3960 (ext 259) or email [email protected].

NEWS FROM THE BLEACHERSThe athletic department at Portland Christian is always look-ing for ways to improve our coaches and athletes each season, practice, and contest. Ultimately, our goal is to create student-athletes that are prepared beyond their sport to be great in all of their endeavors.

Recently, I challenged our coaches at all levels to give our stu-dents athletes the opportunity to lead. There are many times as coaches that we try to provide the perfect opportunity for our athletes to be prepared by controlling the environment so they can be successful. However, recently I came across the quote “Don’t prepare the way for the child; prepare the child for the way.” This resonated with me tremendously as our coaches should find ways to allow the students to lead.

I recently heard a conversation that Chauncey Billups (former NBA basketball player) had about leadership. His change as

an athlete leader came when the players around him began to mentor him and grow his ability to lead. As much as we try to teach our athletes about leadership, I feel that the best develop-ment in leadership skills is gained when the athletes learn to lead themselves. Our coaches are in the business of leadership. We are always looking for ways to get our athletes to lead, but the question I had for each coach was, do we give our athletes the opportunity and skills to find their leadership strengths?

With this challenge, our hope is that our coaches are looking for ways to develop leadership skills within our athletes more intentionally. Our athletic program is strong in many ways right now. We are growing back into the programs we used to be competitively. However, as we do that, we want to make sure we are growing our student-athletes the right way as well.

Class of 1957

The Class of 1957 celebrated their 60th reunion Septem-ber 5-7 at Alder-sgate Conference Center in Turner, Oregon. It was such a blessing to have nearly 70% of our class attend the reunion.

~Karon Stoller Tromnlitz

Class of 1959Organized by Bonny Dick Boatman and June Venoble Corkum, the class met for their {almost} annual class reunion at Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen restaurant on Monday, October 4th. It was wonderful to have so many of the class in attendance, even from out of state, and to have been able to make contact with those who had not been at reunions in the past. One comment made was, “It is encouraging to see that of the couples here in attendance tonight, everyone is still married to their first spouse.” “What an anomaly in our world today.” ~Bonnie Dick Boatman

REUNIONS

Dr. Scott 1976 and Leslie Walt Recently Scott and Leslie visited Portland Christian from Vienna, Austria where for many years they have been have been serving as church planters and Bible teachers.

Class of 1976-1977Thanks to Rick and Tami Caffall, children and grandchildren, for opening their home and providing a beautiful venue for our reunion. Many thanks to those who came from long distances and to those who arrived later. Thanks also to Jeanne Lampi who managed to arrive despite being in a wheel chair, (the re-sult of an auto accident). We visited, we ate, and we got caught up on the past years. All agreed that 10 years is far too long to wait for our next reunion. Stay in touch for details on our next venture together. ~Karen Hall Miller

WINTER/SPRING 2017 15

CLASS OF 1967From Dave Leeman….So many of us were able to gather together to celebrate our Class’ 50th Anniversary and celebrate Portland Christian’s 70 years of existence. As

we gathered on Friday night, June 2nd at the Old Spaghetti Factory, one of the thigs I thought was interesting was that personali-ties have not changed much. The uniqueness of our manner of speaking or even tone of voice remained solidly the same. It was our characteristics that set us apart, rather than our looks, that remain with us all our lives. We shared good laughs as we remembered 50 years ago and there were those moments

of sentiment and heartfelt expressions of love. The evening ended with a time of prayer for each other-particularly those with crisis health issues and the families of those who have gone on to Heaven before us. On Saturday, we enjoyed a tour of the “new” campus, the luncheon prior to graduation. The fact that we were honored at Graduation was a capstone of the weekend. They even let us sing with the PCHS concert choir and the I AM honoring Bob Barber. Do I have any regrets? The only thing I wish we had had the time to do, would have been more time to talk individually with each other. As an added note, Doxie suggested and I agree, that we might consider meeting again when we turn 70. What a fun idea. Perhaps we could do something overnight. Stay tuned for more thoughts and ideas.

REUNIONS

CLASS OF 1987

With Kate Harding Huffman, Dave Scott, Cody Porter, Aron Scothorn, Rachel Carpenter Gordon, Lorraine Hislop Newell, Christi Bolen Staples, Mark Matthews, anytime is party time, but especially at the Old Chicago Pizza when classmates met to celebrate their 30th PCH Reunion on June 29th.

CLASS OF 1992Twenty-five Years pass oh, so quickly and so do the many changes in the lives of our classmates. Some have stayed in the area since gradu-ation, others have moved to Africa, the Middle East, the Pacific Rim Nations, Hawaii and beyond. One thing remained a constant, however, no one forgot Portland Christian, our teachers and the great times we all had. Several expressed reticence at returning to their reunion. More than one expressed. “Will I recog-nize anyone anymore?” After the first few minutes at any one of the three events (November 10, 11, 12) planned by Rachel Curnel-Struemf, all reservations were cast aside and people opened up freely talking nonstop into the evenings. The first event planned was at Rachel’s family home in Corbett, the second was at McMenamins in Troutdale and the third on Sunday, at Portland Christian.

THANK YOU FOR GIVING TO PORTLAND CHRITIAN SCHOOLSWe are grateful to all those who so generously give both monetarily and in other ways to Portland Christian Schools. As the year 2017 comes to an end, we are asking you to consider a year-end gift to the school. As always, our expenses are significant and our need for financial aid is greater than ever. Because Christ-centered values are taught in every area of our school, our students are well prepared to live, teach and lead in the truth of God’s Word.
