It is time for summer fun. Memorial Day will be over by the time you read this, and the Fourth of July will be here before we realize it. We turn around and it has come and gone. Way too fast it all flies by and we wonder where has the time gone? We realize how precious it is. Time

spent with family and friends seems too short, they are here and then there are gone till the next season when we see them again. We are both happy for a breather and sad to see them go. But, that is life. So enjoy your summer and rest up for our winter friends’ return. As we wait for that date look up, enjoy the clouds, tolerate the rain and humidity, and always remember “ain’t life great!”

MANAGER’S REPORTBy Tom Fastiggi

Good morning.

Today marks my first board meeting and the completion of my second week at Harbor Cove. This is a great opportunity for me and I am excited to be part of your community and I thank you for choosing me as your manager.

There are a number of maintenance projects under way that relate to utilities.

The most visible project is a city project to line the main sewer lines with a resin soaked cloth that is inserted into the sewer line and hardened with steam. The underground sewer lines are made of clay, and at each joint there is the potential for ground water to leak into the sewer lines. Once the ground water is combined with our sewer water, all of it is pumped and processed by the city. On a rainy day, it could be as much as a million gallons per day of ground water that can leak into the sewer lines to be processed by the city.

By re-lining the sewer pipes, this water flow can be significantly reduced resulting in a savings to city government, as the only water to be processed is the water that is truly sewage. The contract calls for re-lining 12,100 feet of pipe.

Florida Power and Light continues to work on the property. Through their subcontractor Pike Construction, Pike is replacing overhead and underground feeder lines, as well as eleven poles and remedial work on other concrete poles.

In a few weeks, they will be replacing a major line to a section of the community, which will require the power to be off temporarily in certain areas. Pike will advise us in advance of the sections and day for power shut off. We will be certain to get the message out early to our residents to minimize the inconvenience. This work is dependent on weather, so it is possible that we will have an alternative day in the schedule to allow for bad weather. Early notice will be provided to the affected homes.

FROM THE EDITORBy Sue Nanz 587-1826

Summer is here! We have had lots of 90-degree days so the pool is THE place to be.

It is also the time of the year that we see less news in the newsletter but articles and stories are longer since we have extra space. I

appreciate all of you who send me these things and hope all of you enjoy them. Don’t forget how easy it is to see the newsletter in color by going to www.4communitymedia.com and clicking on newsletters and then clicking on Harbor Cove. This is a good month to see the color pictures of the hats from the Kentucky Derby.

Thanks again to Giles and Cindy Girard for the great pictures. What would we have on the front without them?

I am leaving the Harbor Cove Daily Activities at the Rec Hall and at the North Rec Center in the bulletin. I will try to get an accurate listing of ongoing activities in next month’s newsletter.

I hope all of you are enjoying your summer. We plan a couple of trips to Indiana this year. One to Crown Point for Gary’s class reunion and one to Fort Wayne for a wedding. The rest of the time you can find us by the Harbor Cove pool!

HARBOR COVE BOAT CLUBBy Bob and Sandy McGreevy 429-8178

And they’re off!! May 2nd was our Boat Club’s last hurrah. The Kentucky Derby was attended by 102 guests and a good time was had by all. A great big THANK YOU fo our Committee: Willy and Rose Howlett, Keith and Carol Utz, Erika and Jim Brown, Micki and Rick Simon, Dottie and Duke Duquette, Rick Kubit, Dorothy Bromley and Dee and Clark Fiddes. They did a great job selling tickets, paying the winners, handling the payouts for the race winners, helping in the kitchen and just about everything in between.

Sue Fulford, Cindy Girard and, Sharon Cox were the judges for the Beautiful Hat Contest. Our first place winner was Erika Brown, Pat Thams took 2nd place and Duke Duquette was third with his Derby hat.

All the wonderful chefs of Harbor Cove whipped up some very tasty dishes and an array of sinfully delicious desserts that everyone enjoyed. I’d also like to thank everyone who came out and supported the Boat Club. Hope to see you all again next year.

KENTUCKY DERBYBy Giles and Cindy Girard

The Harbor Cove Kentucky Derby was a wonderful success. We had over 100 people in attendance. Enthusiastic attendees came dressed in their Kentucky Derby attire. It was a hard decision to determine the winners, as there were so many to choose from. The first place winner was Erika Brown. The second place winner was Pat Thames and the third place winner was Duke Duquette.

A special thank you to Bob & Sandy McGreevy and Wilie & Rose Howlett who along with their teams did a great job of organizing the event.

HARBOR COVE BOAT CLUB MEMORIAL GOLF SCRAMBLEBy The Memorial Golf Committee

The 7th annual Harbor Cove Boat Club and Memorial Committee Golf Scramble is now history. We thank you all for your support and participation in this year’s event.

The proceeds from this event are dedicated to keeping the memorial walkway up to date and in good condition. This includes - purchasing the pavers, removing blank pavers, engraving the pavers, replacing, grouting, and sealing the new pavers, and continuous garden maintenance. It’s a lot of work, meaningful for the whole Harbor Cove Community. Please if you haven’t taken a look at the walkway take a minute or two and stop by. It’s located on Tampico Rd, by the marina. Each paver is engraved with the name and year of the deceased members along with personal wording, up to 42 characters, if requested by family. Personal pavers may be purchased at any time but the walkway is only updated once a year.

This year’s winners of the team competition are 1st place – Don Dippel, Sue Fulford, and Don Gray, 2nd place – Wayne Ciancie, Connie East, Steve Howard, Guy Attenasio, and 3rd place – Gary Nepone, Erika Brown, and Gladys Rock.

Plans for the 8th annual are underway. Details to be worked out but date will be March 12th and the scramble will be held at the Hills golf course in Rotunda. It’s a great day to meet new people, have a lot of laughs, and just an enjoyable day. Brush off those clubs this summer and we’ll be looking forward to another great turnout for 2016.

MEMORIAL COMMITTEEBy Bonnie Erfourth, Chairman 456- 0564

The Memorial Committee looks into memorial requests before they are sent to the ROC Board for final approval.

A memorial is a tribute within the community in honor or memory of a loved one who is a resident of Harbor Cove.

Our main responsibility at present is sending letters of condolences and information on the "memorial paver program". We also oversee the engraving and setting of the pavers in the Memorial Walk on Tampico.

If you feel this is something you would be interested in doing, please consider joining our committee. We meet once a month during the season and as needed during the summer.

HARBOR COVE SINGLESBy Carol Farley 426-1716

Joan Eitel, Margie Michel and Dodie Walerius were the hostesses for the May singles. They planned dinner at the Old World, breakfast at Alvaros, lunch at Norma Jeans, Pizza in the Rec Room, and dinner at the left Coast in Venice.

We are planning on staying active during the summer months, so please come and join us. Gerry MacQueen is in charge of the June activities, just come to our regular meeting in the Hospitality Room at 4:00 pm on June 3rd to get details of expected activities for the month.

ABOUT HARBOR COVE SINGLESBetty Falch started the present Harbor Cove Singles in September 1990. Recently retired from the State of Wisconsin, and knowing no one, she placed an article in the Harbor Cove newsletter to see if there would be any interest in starting a singles group.

Nine ladies responded and they set about organizing a Harbor Cove Singles group. The first thing agreed

upon was to start a very loose-knit, informal group—no officers, charters or by-laws. The avowed purpose was for companionship and sociability—not for matchmaking. They would have two regular monthly functions for members here in the park, so even the older, less mobile members would be able to participate. They could attend other activities as able. The general business meeting would be held on the 1st Wednesday of the month and a social activity would be planned for the 4th Friday.

In one of the early years, Bud Cates started what has become an annual event: The Men’s Spaghetti Dinner. We often had potlucks so the women did most of the work with men bringing the easy things like rolls or pickles. The suggestion was to hold the spaghetti dinner every year in February as kind of a Valentine affair. The men pay for the food, shop, prepare and serve the dinner.

The only requirement to join the group would be to be single, widowed, divorced or never married. Although different names were suggested for the group, the name “Harbor Cove Singles” remains.

When Harbor Cove singles got started, Betty Falch did everything for three years before thinking someone else should take over. No one was willing to take on a year, so we started with a leadership term of 6 months. That later changed to 2 months and for the last several years has been for only one month. One or two members volunteer to plan activities for a month, conduct the business meeting the first Wednesday of the month in the Hospitality Room at 4:00pm and lead the group in their selected activities (i.e., making restaurant reservations, securing theatre tickets, etc.).

In the beginning, we paid “no dues” until someone suggested that there was no worth associated with an organization without dues. So we started charging annual dues of $3.00 per calendar year. This group has little need of money, only for the cost of printing and purchasing of supplies for food functions. So with a “free pizza party” every year, each member literally gets his/her $3.00 back.

Without formal organization, this group has just “evolved.” Our current Treasurer, Gerry MacQueen is also is our Sunshine Chair as well as taking charge of Christmas Shoe Boxes which are gifts for children

in North Port.

Our dues were raised and are currently $5.00 per calendar year. Carol Farley and Judy Belyea are in charge of membership and collection of dues. After all dues are collected, they prepare an updated membership list that is given to each paid member. Carol also maintains supplies in the Singles storage cabinet.

One of our challenges was how to make this group more welcoming and friendly to newcomers. We have been guilty of the human tendency to “cluster” with friends. There now is “Welcome to New Members” sheet available for you to pick up by the Singles Bulletin Board located just outside the game room.

And, as always, all singles are welcome to join us—whether new to the park or having lived here a long time. Our circumstances change. As singles we have a commonality—just being single. “Singles is only about sociability and companionship in what is usually a “couples world.” So give us a try! We always meet the 1st Wednesday of each month at 4:00 pm in the Hospitality Room.

NOTE OF THANKSCarty and I would like to thank all of our friends, neighbors, and in some cases new acquaintances, for all the prayers, love, support, and yes, food, given us during our recent unexpected journey dealing with pancreatic cancer.

We are so fortunate to live here in Harbor Cove, where no matter who you are people care, people help, people encourage you, people are real people. God has certainly Blessed our lives with these kinds of people. We thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts, and we love all of you. All of your acts of love and kindness will never be forgotten, but forwarded if and whenever we can do so.

Most Sincerely, Carty and Alyda Carpenter

SMOKE DETECTORS – THE NEW LAW IN 2015Did you know there was a change in the law regarding smoke alarms in one family dwellings and townhomes?

Effective January 1, 2015 any battery-powered smoke alarm that is newly installed or replaces an

existing battery powered smoke alarm must be powered by nonremovable, nonreplaceable battery that will power the alarm for

at least 10 years. These requirements do not apply to a centrally monitored or supervised alarm system or to any ancillary component that is electronically connected as part of a centrally monitored or supervised alarm system.

The new styled smoke detectors are a few dollars more in cost than the throwaway kind we are used to in the past, but the purpose is to avoid having residents, tenants, or owners, from removing the battery in a chirping smoke detector. This is especially important for those owners who rent their home during the year. If you need any further information feel free to call the management office.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?By Marvin DeMeester

To begin with I’m forty-nine years old, black and my job is managing the affairs of the Houston mansion. I supervise three people: a cook, a maid and a gardener who also fills in as a chauffer. Since Mrs. Houston passed away and Mr. Houston was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, my job has changed. Now we never entertain and I spend a lot of my time looking after Mr. Houston. He is confined to his upstairs bedroom (actually more like an apartment than a bedroom).

My name is Elizabeth L. Washington. No, the “L” does stand for Lincoln, and neither my parents nor my grandparents picked cotton on some southern plantation. The “L” stands for Leona, and my father was an engineer on the T & P Railroad. My mother taught school and together they raised four children. Three of us attended college and my one brother chose to make a career in the military.

I remember my first day of college, how I entered the dorm and was about to meet my roomie for the first time. I opened the door and there she was, a very pretty young girl dressed to kill, and I could see her luggage was designer plus. This girl had money, and she was white! My concern soon vanished as we became acquainted. In fact, we discovered we had the same classes and at the same time. Before the first month passed, we spent so much time together our friends started calling us “Salt and Pepper.” Wherever one of us showed up, the other one was not far away. No one ever thought of inviting one of us to a function without inviting the other. This was a friendship that would last forever.

Upon graduation with a business degree, I found

out that just because I had this little piece of paper, there was nobody standing in line to offer me a job.

I was feeling very depressed when Mary Ellen, my roomie, mentioned that the lady who was in charge of their family household just left and she had persuaded her parents to offer me the job of managing the Moore estate.

That was twenty-five years ago and I held that position for fifteen years until they decided to move to Hawaii and the property was sold. Fortunately, this job at the Houston household opened up at that time, and I’ve been here ever since.

Every Tuesday, Fred, the gardener turned chauffeur and drove me around town to buy supplies and run any other errands that needed attending to. It was on one of those days at Jim’s Meat Market that Jim, the owner, asked me to buy a lottery ticket. He had printed it for a customer who then changed his mind about buying it. So rather than canceling it, he asked me to help him out and buy it. So, I reached in my coin purse and gave him four quarters and placed the ticket back in the coin purse along with my other change.

The next day the papers announced that there was one winner of the $160,000,000 drawing, but the winner had not yet claimed the prize. Six weeks went by and the public was still waiting. Then one day as I was going through my purse, I came across the ticket. Before I threw it away, I decided to see how close I came to the winning numbers. To my surprise, they matched exactly! But, I don’t want to be a millionaire. I have the perfect job. I supervise a maid who goes about her work singing all day long, a cook whose meals are fit for a king, and a boss who treats me like I own the house instead of him. What would I do with $160 million dollars? After a week of deliberation and seven sleepless nights, I decided to look into the situation. As I approached the Treasury building, there was still a group of reporters hanging around waiting to interview the lucky winner.

I almost turned around to go back home when I saw the sign in the window: “Cleaning Help Wanted, Apply Room 204.” At Room 204, they informed me the opening was for four hours a night beginning at 5:00 pm and working till 9:00 pm. I filled out the

application (lying a little) and they offered me the job and I was to start the following Monday. Well, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday passed before I had a chance to speak with Mr. Hendrix, the headman. I told him I had the winning ticket but did not want anyone to know about it. He was skeptical until I showed him the ticket. He said by law, he had to record the winner‘s name. It was then that I told him I needed a financial advisor and the job paid $100,000 a year if he could keep my name from the public. And then I just happened to mention that I saw no reason why a public official could not have a part-time job.

The next night we came up with the solution. I would register an “also known as” name in another state and claim the prize using that name. Then I could transfer the money from the bank in that city to the bank account I had here. Hopefully, no one would ever be the wiser. Of course, the actual check was for only $98,000,000 after taxes. Mr., Hendrix gave me the check that night and then announced the next day that the money had been claimed by Mrs. Verna Smithonian who lived out of state and that she wished no publicity for her winnings. The next problem came when I tried to deposit a million dollars into my account. The young bank clerk looked at the deposit slip and promptly stated he would have George’s

to see the bank president before accepting such a large amount. I quickly took back the slip and asked if I could meet with him when he got out of work. So over a donut and a cup of coffee, I told him the whole story and also explained that I needed a financial advisor and that the job paid $100,000 as long as no one ever found out that I was the lottery winner. I also let it be known that a bank clerk could have a part-time job.

With his advice, I opened a business account where he said larger amounts were quite common and my deposit would be nothing out of the ordinary. Also, he would personally handle my deposits.

Later, Mr. Houston happened to mention that his son, John, would probably sell the estate once it came in his possession. Here was my opportunity to keep things as they were. So I told him everything and after a long discussion, he sold me the 39-acre estate with the understanding that he could live there as long as he lived. Of course, I bought it using my assumed name.

Even better news came when his doctor remarked

how well he was doing and that there was a good possibility that he might have a complete recovery. I was in seventh heaven. Everything was working out just fine until Albert Rogers knocked on the door and asked to see Miss Elizabeth Washington. Albert explained he worked for the Morning Star as a reporter and that two weeks ago, he had been given the assignment to find the lottery winner and get her story. “It took me a little time and a lot of travel, but I know all about you and your other name and even the purchase of this estate,” he said. My world was crashing in around me and I almost cried, but I had to give it one more try, so I said, “Albert, how would you like to be a millionaire?”
