National Project On Biogas Development

The National Project on Biogas Development came into existence in the state of Gujarat from November, 1981.

The Project is covered under the revised 20-point program announced by the Hon. Prime Minister.

The role of GAIC is to act as Nodal Agency of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt. of India for implementation of

National Biogas and Manure Management Program in Gujarat.

What is Biogas

Biogas originates from bacteria in the process of bio-degradation of organic material under anaerobic conditions and mainly consists of methane (60%).

BENEFITS

Production of Energy (Heat, Light, electricity)

• Calorific value – 6 k Wh/m3

• Equivalent to half liter of diesel oil.

• Replaces conventional fuels e.g. Kerosene, fire wood.

• Up to 4 m3 capacity BGU are used for cooking and lighting purpose.

Transformation of organic waste into high quality organic fertilizer.

• It is a by product of BGU.

• Has three times more nitrogen than the best compost made from open air digestion.

• Contains all the nutrients and microbe organisms required for plant.

• Secrete growth promoting substances.

Health Benefits and improved hygienic conditions

• Decrease respiratory illness, eye infection, asthma, lung problems.

• Improved nutritional pattern.• The following are the principal organisms killed in biogas

plants:o Typhoido Paratyphoid,o Cholera and dysentery bacteria (in one or two

weeks),o Hookworm and bilharzia (in three weeks).o Tapeworm and roundworm die completely when

the fermented slurry is dried in the sun.

• Cooking with gas takes less time.

• It is easier to cook with gas stove.

• Average per capita consumption of wood is 3 kg per day in rural area.

• Daily requirement of fire wood can be met with 2 m3 capacity BGU.

• It produces cheap and better fertilizer with maintain microbiological balance of soil.

• More fodder is available for animals.

• It saves forests and hence soil erosion.

Global Environmental Benefits

• Main product, Methane is second most important greenhouse gas after CO2.

• It has 25 times higher global warming potential compared to CO2.

• Its use reduces CO2 emission through a reduction of the demand for fossil fuels.

• It captures uncontrolled methane emission.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

For 1 cubic meter capacity biogas plant: Rs 4000/- from GOI and Rs 2000/- per plant from GOG.

For 2 to 4 cubic meter capacity biogas plant: Rs 8000/- per plant from GOI.
