1-180 St. Thomas of Villanova SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 27, 2014 A Note from Fr. Joe …. Having completed a 5-day silent retreat and a few days of vacation, I’m back in the office and full speed ahead! But as we all hopefully discover, slowing down is essential. Despite jokes about my not being able to stay quiet, I found the retreat to be quite refreshing and something that I hadn’t realized how much I was missing in my life. In fact, I’ve already tentatively booked a week for next year. In the meantime, I’d recommend looking into some of the fine retreat houses we have right here in our area – even if only for a day or part of a day away – or, if you want a gem of a place a bit upstate, check out St. Francis Retreat House in Easton, PA, where I took my retreat. Run by Capuchin Franciscan friars on 25 beautiful acres, the site is perfect for prayer, reflection, and some real rest & relaxation. Their website is: www.stfrancisretreathouse.org. While on retreat, I took as my companion a new book that I mentioned in our Easter Sunday bulletin. At the time, I said that I was looking forward to savoring Fr. Jim Martin, S.J.’s Jesus: A Pilgrimage – and, I can tell you, it did not disappoint! Drawing on a trip to the Holy Land, along with Gospel passages, commentaries, and personal reflection, Fr. Jim pulls the reader in and makes Jesus present in very tangible way. It’s hard to describe, but I felt a closeness with Christ and fresh insights into who Jesus is – both in general and for me. Please do yourself a favor and consider adding this book to your summer reading list. And, as I joked at the end of a Mass a couple weeks ago, I’m not making a commission on it! In addition to Jesus: A Pilgrimage, I used a relatively new English translation of 15 Days of Prayer with St. Augustine by Fr. Jaime García, O.S.A. It too is a good companion, introducing one to the spiritual thoughts of Augustine on everything from the Incarnation to the Eucharist and the Church. And the nice thing is that you can take it a step at a time, digesting the material and praying as you go along. While I’m on recommendations, there’s another book that just was released titled What Are They Saying About Augustine? Fr. Art generously had a copy waiting for me in my mailbox. As its author, Dr. Joseph Kelley, notes, the text provides “an overview suitable for… parish discussion groups among laity who wish to gain a more sophisticated understanding of Augustine and of church history.” Joe is Professor of Theology and Director of the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. Last, but certainly not least, I’m happy to announce the hiring of Mr. Gregory Stejskal as our parish’s new Director of Religious Education and Youth Ministry. He hopes officially to come on board on August 4 th . After that, we’ll provide a more detailed introduction. I can tell you that, from an almost 2 hour interview, I found Greg to be bright, articulate, and engaging; I’m sure you will as well. Thank you to Fr. Art, Deacon Don, and Anne Murphy, along with Dan Cellucci, Kate Kopp, and Dean Miller from Pastoral Council, for their assistance in the process! God Bless! Fr. Joe IMPORTANT NOTICE! Running through early August, Villanova University will be undertaking a construction project – the laying of chilled water underground piping – that ultimately, among other things, will assist in the updating of air conditioning for the Villanova Church. For the remainder of the project, from June 16 th through early August, the Fedigan Gate will remain open for access to the Church – but, again, follow the instructions of the guards and any signs that may be posted. In addition, we will have a link on our parish website to maps detailing the various phases of the project. As always, remember that the preferred primary option for Church parking is the lot directly across Lancaster Avenue. The only parishioners coming onto campus for Sunday Mass or other services should be those with different mobility needs. Please keep this in mind, especially during the project, and be respectful of the parking for Augustinian residents around the Monastery. Thank you for your cooperation! Fr. Joe

Stewardship Thought for the Week “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purposes.” Romans 8:28 Do you really trust God? Do you believe that all things work for good? Faith is a challenge for everyone at times. Putting our trust in God, in everything we do, means that God’s plan for our lives may be different than our plan. When one door closes, another door opens. Trust in God, His plan is always better.

“Masses in Interpreted American Sign Language” Although we usually have an American Sign Language Interpreter at the 9:00am Mass in the Rosemont Chapel on the Second and Fourth Sunday of each month. The interpreter is unable to be here during August. The Masses with an interpreter will resume in September. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

DIOCESE OF PUERTO PLATA

SUMMER MISSION APPEAL Weekend of July 26-27 at

St. Thomas of Villanova

The Diocese of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic was established in December of 1996 by the bifurcation from the Diocese of Santiago. Santiago then became an Archdiocese. At the time of its founding, the diocese had approximately sixteen priests other than those belonging to religious congregations. We have been blessed to receive many priestly vocations, and the number of priests in the diocese has doubled. We have an equal number of seminarians preparing for the priesthood and a flourishing program for the formation of permanent deacons as well. Seminary education here costs almost as much as the average annual income for a family. It is for this reason that we make Mission Appeals, in order to be able to keep our seminarians in school and in order that no young man whom God has called to the priesthood be denied his vocation for financial reasons. Grace Gallagher, the speaker, has volunteered as a lay missionary in the Diocese of Puerto Plata since 2001. She is originally from Philadelphia and is a graduate of a diocesan high school — Cardinal Dougherty. Her work involves raising money for the education of seminarians, for our orphanages and Catholic schools, for the pastoral outreach of the diocese, and for the formation of permanent deacons. Grace also coordinates medical-dental outreaches in the diocese when groups of dentists or doctors travel here to serve the poor or when a child has a medical need that cannot be met by the family or local medical community.

July 7, 2014 Dear Parishioners of St. Thomas: We are most grateful to you for your generous grant of $1,200 towards a new recumbent bike. The bike will enable our Residents to strengthen their legs and arms without straining their back. With stronger legs, they will be able to walk around and to get in and out of chairs more easily. Your contribution is a big step towards the purchase of the bike and towards improving their quality of life. We very much appreciate your support. Thank you for joining us in our mission of serving the elderly poor. Sincerely, Sister Catherine Frain, lsp Mother Superior

Community Outreach Partnership 2212 Spruce Street Philadelphia, PA 19103 July 9, 2013 Dear Parishioners: On behalf of the Community Outreach Partnership (CORP), I am writing to thank you for your grant in the amount of $2,000. The grant will be used to help fund the Communicare and WinterShelter programs we operate in Center City, Philadelphia. We are grateful that we can count on the generosity of churches as well as our friends and neighbors to support CORP programs. The problems of homelessness, isolated elderly people and hunger never go away; our WinterShelter, Communicare and Cook-Off programs are a practical way for people to help — both as volunteers and donors. Thank you again for your support. Sincerely, John Randolph Board Convener
