2019 was another successful year with over 140,000 people going through History

San Jose Park and many of them visiting our Museum. The Portuguese Museum also

hosted many private tours by schools and individual groups. With just the History San

Jose Educational Program alone, we had over 1,300 5th and 6th graders visiting the

Museum focusing on “Immigration”. They learned why people leave their countries to

come to the United States mainly California and Hawaii, as well as their traditions,

foods, and music.

A recap of 2019. Aside from our main Dia de Portugal Festival, the Museum also

participated in community events such as the Holy Ghost parades, the Carlos Vieira

Portuguese Festival in Turlock where we showcased some of our museum exhibits in

April, and collaboration during Portuguese week with our doors opened to the public.

We hosted our annual “Friends’ Picnic” in September as a gesture of appreciation

for the continuous support and contribution from our “Friends of the Museum”. The

most exciting 2019 project yet, was our online digital exhibit system. Over twenty

exhibits with nearly 1,000 images are now available on both our in-house big screen

display for our Museum visitors as well as anywhere in the World from our website

portuguesemuseum.org! We are extremely grateful to Davide Vieira for his

continuous generosity with his technical skills and time in creating this online exhibit

system in preserving our Portuguese culture and showcasing the heritage of the

Portuguese immigrants, their descendents in California and the larger Diaspora.

Everyone’s continuing participation is a vital contribution to the Dia De Portugal

Festival and for the future of our Museum. We look forward to another great year!

Thank you! Mutíssimo Obrigado!

This year’s theme will be “Madeira, 600 Hundred Years of History”. Madeira was

one of the first discoveries of the Prince Henry School of Navigation. An uninhabited

island off the coast of Africa which became part of history after the Portuguese landed

in 1418. The exhibit will tell the story of the many cycles of Madeiran history, the

wheat, the sugar, the wine and the tourism. It will tell of the development of the

island, the famous levadas, and the emigration from the island as Madeirans settled

throughout the world, especially in Hawaii. Finally, we will tell of modern Madeira,

from the new airport to Madeira’s most famous son, Cristiano. Other aspects of the

festival include Madeiran themes, food and folklore. Mark the date, Saturday, June

13, 2020 on your calendar and prepare to experience all things, Madeiran!

FRIENDS OF THE PORTUGUESE MUSEUM This February Newsletter of the Portuguese Museum “A Nossa Herança” (Our Heritage) has traditionally

recognized all the wonderful people who are Friends of the Portuguese Museum. These people have enabled

our museum to thrive and to bring to the community the history and culture of our people. With the support of

our friends, the Portuguese museum is the most beautiful and well kept museum at History San Jose. We have

been able to remodel the interior of our building, keep the exterior well maintained, expanded our garden, and

renew our plaza. Moreover, because of the friends support we have been able to develop and display a new

exhibit every year. In 2020 Madeira will be our focus and we look forward to every one visiting the museum

to see this exposition.

To the following we say a big Thank You! Obrigado!

KEVIN COELHO, owner of HGC Imports

Kevin Coelho has recently joined the Board of the Portuguese Heritage

Society. We welcome Kevin and would like to spotlight his company, which

provides an important service to our community.

HGC was purchased by Mario and Delphine Coelho in 1993. Mario was

born in Cedros, Faial and Delphine in San Jose. They ran HGC until 2006 when their sons Kevin & Jason

took over. HGC has permits to import, beer, wine, spirits and specialty foods. Naturally the focus is on food

from Portugal! Beer brands, Quinas and Especial, many wine brands (such as Casal Garcia, Avelada, J.P.),

cheese from the several islands of the Azores, Portuguese lupini beans (tremoços), olives, tuna, sardines and

olive oil, among many items. HGC services Washington State, Oregon, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming as well

as Northern California. HGC supplies many festas in California with their Portuguese food and beverage

needs. Most items are transported through the Panama Canal by ship and takes about 5 weeks to arrive at the

HGC warehouses.

We want to thank Kevin for keeping alive this important outlet to the delicious foods of our homeland.

Make PORTUGUESE Count “Write in “Portuguese” for Question #7 in your 2020 U.S. Census coming in March!

You may have heard a lot about MAKE PORTUGUESE COUNT and this 2020 Census thing. It is kicking off in March and it’s a big deal. The Census is a 9-question confidential survey that takes 10 minutes to complete. This will be the 1st time all U.S. residents of Portuguese ancestry will be accurately counted. The proposed Question #7: Race/Origins will give a clear option to identify our numbers and our voice. We urge all Portuguese to write in the word “Portuguese” on the Race/Origin Question #7. You can mark more than one ethnicity if you are only part Portuguese, but please do not forget to write in “Portuguese” also. When you fill out the Census, each person in your household (including you) brings $$$$ into our Portuguese community for funding of dozens of vital programs over the next ten years. Every household will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census from either a postal worker or a census worker, and you will have the option of responding online, by mail, or by phone. Help us spread the word. We are Portuguese and we count!
