Steer pg. 3 Birthdays pg. 5 Gallery pg. 6 Calendar pg. 8 I’d like to start this New Year off with a positive story which brings to light the brilliance and professional- ism of the people in our agency. As many of you know Southern Mary- land Hospital has recently (ok, a year ago) become a STEMI Center of the Southern Maryland Region. Since becoming a STEMI Center, Charles County crews (mostly in the Waldorf area) have been cred- ited with saving numerous lives be- cause of their diligence, fast ac- tions, and attention to detail. I re- ceive at least six kudos a month from SMHC regarding the excellent work we do, you may have received a copy or two yourself. Our aver- age door to balloon time is well un- der the recommended standard (35 min.) and for that I applaud you! Mid-December I received a call from the STEMI representative rav- ing about two of our crews in par- ticular. One from Waldorf and one from Newburg (you know who you are) who shall be mentioned at a later date; don’t want to spoil it for them. These two crews in particu- lar were so astute that they recog- nized a STEMI patient, diagnosed it in the field, activated the STEMI Center and transported the patient to the cath lab in remarkable time where they were actually credited by the cardiologists with saving the patient’s lives. Very impressive! What’s even more impressive is that SMHC has been so impressed with our STEMI results they have com- mitted to and executed the donation of funds to provide our EMS System (career and volunteer) with the LIFENET Program for a continued period of 5 years (http://www.physio -control.com/products/information- management/clinical/product- detail.aspx?id=566 )! This new technological gift will not only benefit our agency tremen- dously but the citizens we serve even more by allowing each LP-12 to transmit 12-Lead EKG’s wire- lessly to the STEMI Center at a mo- ment’s notice. This gift is worth around $50,000.00 at no cost to the County. As soon as we are able to make the procurement provisions we should begin installation and training so we can get these moni- tors on-line. Kudos to you or all of your hard work and pride!!! Thank you for making our agency tops! “New Year's Day: Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. ~Mark Twain

As we start a new year and make New Year's Resolutions,

take time to think about some Safety Resolutions such as:

Pay more attention to home and community safety.

Put away your cell phone and text messaging while driv-

ing.

Always read the instructions on medications

you are taking.

Organize your garage, removing clutter

that's a mess but also dangerous.

Check your smoke detector and carbon mon-

oxide detector batteries twice per year

Never drink and drive!

HAVE A WONDERFUL, SAFE NEW YEAR!!

THE PULSE

Congratulations

2nd Lt. Steer!

Charles County Paramedic Rick Steer recently graduated from the University of Maryland with a de-gree in criminal justice, which was his final requirement before becom-ing a Marine Corps Officer.

On Sunday, January 10th, 2010, friends and family joined him at the Woodland Beach volunteer Fire De-partment to witness his commis-sioning. This is the official cere-mony where he received the rank of 2nd Lt. His father, a former Navy Chief, rendered 2nd Lt. Steer his first salute.

This is not only the end of a long road for Lt. Steer, but is also the be-ginning of an exciting new career. Anyone wishing to send congratula-tions may mail them to:
