CLM5 Crop – Crop Yield and Production – Lombardozzi et al 2018
- UN FAOSTAT provides annual country level statistics for crop harvest area and yield for 178 crops for 258 countries from 1961 – 2016
Global Crop Area, Yield and Irrigation Evaluation Data
Slide 2 - Outline
- MIRCA2000 (Monthly Irrigated and Rainfed Crop Areas) (Portmann et al 2010) provides global rainfed and irrigated physical distribution maps for 26 crops representing the average for the period 1998 – 2002 at 5 arc minutes resolution (~9km). Current guidance for CLM5 crop mapping from CMIP6/LUMIP LUH2 time series data.
- MapSPAM (Spatial Production Allocation Model) (You et al 2017) provides global rainfed and irrigated maps for physical and harvested area, production, and yield for the year 2005 for 42 crops for the year 2005 also at 5 arc minutes
- UN FAOSTAT provides extensive country level data for the period 1961 –2016 for 178 crops but is tabular and difficult use with CLM5 Crop beyond global or regional aggregate numbers.
Global Crop Area, Yield and Irrigation Evaluation Data
Slide 2 - Outline
- MIRCA2000 provides global rainfed and irrigated physical distribution maps for 26 crops but is only a single time period and has no yield information.
- MapSPAM provides global rainfed and irrigated maps for physical and harvested area, production, and yield for 42 crops but is also only for a single time period.
- Integrating these three products with the ESRI countries of the world map at 1km resolution we have produced a series of global maps for Crop Physical, Harvest and Irrigation Areas, with Yield and Production for 48 crops at 1km resolution for 1961 – 2016. For practical purposes the data is regridded to 0.25 or FV 0.9x1.25 degree resolution.
- The UN FAOSTAT data is spatially downscaled for each country for each year using either the MIRCA2000 or MapSPAM physical, harvest or irrigated crop areas, and the MapSPAM yield data for guidance.
- The Global Crop Time Series crop list is a inclusive composition of the CLM5, UN FAOSTAT, MIRCA2000 and MapSPAM crop lists:
