Our favourite findstHe coRBRIDge HoARD Corbridge Roman TownOne�of�the�country’s�most�significant�finds�in�Roman�history�was�excavated 51 years ago on the site. The Hoard is a Roman soldier’s worldly goods and includes armour, tools and weaponry.

geNII cucuLLAtI StoNe - tHe tHRee HooDeD goDSHousesteads Roman fortThis stone represents some of the local and personal deities who were worshipped along Hadrian’s Wall as well as the more well-known Classical deities. The Housesteads’ Gods are likely to be wearing a weatherproof full-length cloak, the byrrus britannicus.

tHe coRBRIDge LIoNCorbridge Roman TownCarved�as�a�large�grave�ornament,�this�fierce�lion�was�later�converted�into a fountain head.

coVeNtINA’S ALtARS Chesters Roman fortThe Roman goddess Coventina was unknown until the resting place of these altars was discovered in a well 150 years ago at Carrawburgh. The well contained altars, thuribles (incense burners), brooches, beads and thousands of coins, which are now on display at the fort.

cARVoRAN MoDIuSChesters Roman fortAn extremely rare bronze ‘corn measure’. Used to ration the soldiers’ allowance, or take in the ‘tax-in-kind’ from locals, called the annona. The unusual thing about this piece is that the measure actually holds more than it says on the inscription on the outside. No-one is quite sure why.
