A Message from the Skål USA President
Fellow Skålleagues,
It is hard to believe that we are entering the last
quarter of the year already! Your Skål USA EC
has been working hard on achieving the goals
set at the begin of the year. I am proud to say
that we have achieved 90% of our goals already!
Since our AGM in May 2018 we have achieved
additional following goals;
- Job Board up and running with great
open positions!
- Podcast Series! We started the Podcast
Series and already produced 3 of them.
They are short and informative. Best
part is you can listen to them on the go!
- Additional Benefits for Skål USA
Members; we have created a page on
our website where you will find all the
lists of new Benefits for Skål USA
members offered by Skålleagues! It is a
Win-Win; while members benefit from
promotions; our Skålleagues offering
the benefits get the opportunity to
promote their business!
- Starting new Clubs; I am glad to report
that Skål USA’s 50th Club is now
official! Welcome back SI Phoenix!
They started strong with 26 members!
We are still working on two more new
clubs to start before the end of the year.
Please reach out to our membership
team if you would like to offer your
help!
- Increase in membership numbers; we
started the year with 1800 members; I
am glad to report that we have reached
1925 membership number. Our goal is
to reach 2000 before end of the year. For
this goal we are depending on each one
of you. If each Club can recruit 2 new
members within the next 3.5 months, we
will be exceeding our goal! So, let’s do
this together staring today! Plan on your
next Membership Recruitment event for
October/ November and offer your new
members 2 months free membership
advantage!
Skålleagues; all these have been accomplished
because of team work on Skål USA EC.
However, it is your support and commitment
![Page 2: A Message from the Skål USA President · Children at the San Jorge Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, are sporting big smiles today ! The story began after Hurricane Maria left the](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022063011/5fc479d3eb89234188634b4d/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)

that motivates this EC to work harder and do
better for our great organization.
Finally, September means Election time for Skål
USA. You must have received the message we
sent out at the begin of September with the
details of the upcoming elections. Please note
that per bylaw changes approved in May 2018 at
Skål USA AGM we no longer have the Director
of PR/ Communications position; it is changed
as VP of PR/ Communications. Based on this
change the Job Description and qualification
requirements are updated as well for this
important position. Please make sure to review.
We are hoping to see new faces on our Skål
USA EC in 2019. So, if you are ready to serve
Skål on the National Level and believe that you
have the time and skills for one of the open
positions we have for 2019, please follow
instructions for submitting nominations!
As always please do not hesitate to reach out to
me or anyone on your Skål USA EC for any
questions, feedback or suggestion(s). We always
love to hear from you and hear to assist you in
the best way we can.

Florimond Volckaert Fund (FVF) Update
What is the Florimond Volckaert Fund?
The Florimond Volckaert Fund (FVF) was
set up in 1954, in the name of the
acknowledged founder of Skål, to provide
assistance to Skålleagues and their
immediate families who are in serious need
of assistance, during times of desperation.
If a Skålleague is in need of help, an
application should be sent to either the
President of your Club or the Skål USA
International Councillor, who will convey
the application to the three FVF Trustees.
They will assess the request and quickly
come to a decision.
Policy Change: As previously advised, all donations
to the FVF must be received by Skål USA within the
calendar year for which the donation is intended.
Donations received after the deadline will be
considered and recognized for the succeeding year.
We can no longer account for pre-payments or
accept payments after the deadline based on when
the funds are required to be transferred to Skål
International.

Our clubs continue to make donations to the FVF and we thank you for your support and dedication to keep this fund healthy and ready to help our members in need. This is a great benefit of our membership in Skål. Thank you all. The World Congress is October 17 – 21, 2018 in Mombasa, Kenya. I look forward to traveling with our US delegates to support our President, Burcin Turkkan in her run for Skål International Director. There is still time to register and we would love as many of our members to join us for this event. Next Years World Congress will be hosted by Skål USA Miami and we know we will get great support from our clubs around the USA. Please start planning now to send your delegate and members. A Message from Skål USA VP of Membership
August 30, 2018
Greetings Fellow Skalleagues,
I’m writing to you this month with some
exciting news. We have officially opened our
50th Club in the United States – please join me in
congratulating SI Phoenix as the newest Club in
Skal USA. This is actually a reformation of the
Club we had in Phoenix which closed down in
2012. Congratulations to Kate Heath / President
of SI Phoenix for all her hard work along with
her Board to make this happen. I would also
like to thank the Board of SI Tucson for their
help in getting this Club up and running.
SI Central California is still a Club in formation
and are looking for a few more members to
reach the minimum required to reopen the
former Club known as SI Fresno. If you know
any industry contacts in the Fresno area please
forward their contact information to me and we
will connect them with the leadership in Fresno.
The launch of SI Phoenix marks the 3rd new
Club that has opened in since 2017 joining SI
Richmond and SI Southwest Florida. We are in
a very exciting time with Skal USA and are
asking for help in getting more new Clubs on
Board in 2018 and 2019. We are currently
actively looking to start Clubs in the following
cities:
• Lexington, Kentucky KY
• Savannah, GA
• Milwaukee, WI
• Detroit, MI
• San Diego, CA
• Houston, TX
• San Antonio, TX
• Cincinnati, OH
• Palm Springs, CA
If you have industry contacts in any of these
cities please forward their contact information to
myself or Jim or Richard on the Membership
Committee. We are not only looking for
potential members in these cities but for those
who may want to take more of a leadership role
in forming new Clubs.
As we move towards the latter half of 2018 we
have set a goal of exceeding 2,000 members of
Skal USA. We are around 1,920 right now so
with a concentrated effort with your Fall
Membership events we feel confident that we
can reach that goal and then some by the end of
the year.
Regards and Skal,
Dave Ryan, CTC

2018 Skål International World
Congress
Blessed with a fantastic climate, natural wildlife
reserves, amazing scenery, mountains, lakes and
600km of Indian Ocean coastline, Kenya has a
unique beauty, enhanced only by its warm and
friendly people. It is Africa’s most popular
safari destination and its capital city – Nairobi is
East Africa’s economic hub. Kenya has a decent
tourist infrastructure and lots of resorts along its
coastline.
Located on the Coast, just south of the Equator,
Mombasa is Kenya’s oldest and largest Port
City, where commercial shipping liners mingle
with traditional sailing dhows. Well known
explorers, Ibn Battuta and Zheng He both visited
here in 1331 and 1412. Originally called the
‘Island of Mvita’, the name Manbaca was first
heard in 1502. By the 1800s, as more explorers
found their way here, phonetic derivations led to
it being called Mombasa.
Now a regional cultural and economic hub,
modern day Mombasa is a city of great diversity
and life. Enjoying temperatures of 25 degrees C
with light prevailing trade winds, Mombasa is
known for its exotic mix of cultures, rich
history, Island’s pace of life, and a fantastic
array of leisure offerings for all ages. The coast
of Kenya has earned its place as one of the
world’s top beaches.
A visit to Kenya however, would be incomplete
without a safari experience and for this reason,
we urge you to indulge in pre & post tours to the
famous Masai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli
National Park at the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro,
the immense Tsavo National Park, the Great Rift
Valley and its stunning lakes, Equatorial forests
of Aberdares & Mt. Kenya. Whatever you
choose to do, know that you will be living the
Magic that is Kenya.
Skål Kenya looks forward to hosting you at the
79th Skål World International Congress in
Mombasa.

Miles of Smiles: Skål Puerto Rico
Children at the San Jorge Hospital in San Juan,
Puerto Rico, are sporting big smiles today
thanks to Skal! The story began after Hurricane
Maria left the U.S. territory in a shambles in
September of 2017. Virtually the entire island
was affected and it took almost a year to get
power and water to all its 3.3 million people.
Martha MacClintock of the Jacksonville Skal
club contacted the Puerto Rico Club in
December offering their annual holiday toy
collection for distribution on the island. Both the
Philadelphia and New Jersey/Atlantic City clubs
joined in and a wonderful supply of gifts was
sent to the care of Puerto Rico Skal president
Ivan Puig.
![Page 11: A Message from the Skål USA President · Children at the San Jorge Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, are sporting big smiles today ! The story began after Hurricane Maria left the](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022063011/5fc479d3eb89234188634b4d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
11
The shipments arrived in time for Three Kings
Day (Jan. 6), the traditional holiday gift
exchange day, but when our club contacted the
intended charity, El Hogar del Niño Josua, we
were dismayed to find that the children had been
moved and the facility closed. The home had
suffered serious damage, and was without power
or water for months.
The alternative chosen was San Jorge Children’s
Hospital. Five Skalleagues—the maximum
number of visitors allowed—headed by
President Puig loaded a van provided by
Skalleague Robert Rodriguez. With the
assistance of Skalleagues Charlotte Ware,
Maritza Toste and Sylvia Rivera the delegation
presented the gifts to the hospital. “It was a
wonderful experience distributing the gifts,
“ Maritza reported. “When the children saw the
room full of gifts, there were miles of smiles,”
the group agreed. Gifts were taken to the non-
ambulatory children during the emotional visit
through the wards.
A Skal luncheon meeting at Mario Pagan
Restaurant in Condado followed the event where
the group shared their excitement and the
expressions of joy and gratitude of the hospital
staff and patients with the club membership.
In other happy news, thanks to contributions by
members and clubs of Skal USA achieved
through a GoFundMe campaign, we were able to
retain most of our members after the hurricane
and we are slowly regaining strength. Hopefully,
we will be back on a full schedule in a year or
two! Our members are very busy rebuilding their
businesses but they are still dedicated to the
ideals of Skal International and grateful for the
support they have received from so many fellow
Skalleagues.

event.
This year’s bar-b-que was a Texas style feast
with chicken, ribs, ribs, brisket and all the sides.

Members and supporters donated many travel
related items, including hotel stays, rounds of

Lauren Cataldo Recognized with
Awards
It’s great when we read about a veteran
Skalleague garnering an important achievement
and we celebrate it when and where we can. But
when one of our younger members wins three
awards from her peers we should shout it from
the rooftops. Recently Skål Northern New
Jersey member Lauren Cataldo won three
awards at Sandals Global Sales Conference. She
was named Northeast Business Development
Manager of the Year as well as Northeast Team
Player, and National Team Player. Lauren’s
hard work and dedication are an example of
what Skål can be proud of. We all wish Lauren
continued success both professionally and
personally. Skål, Lauren!

Hello Fellow Skalleagues, Distinguished Guests,
and Potential Members!
Last night was incredible, and I want to be the
first to tell you all how much it meant to the
local chapter and to Skal International. Thank
you to our board for helping to arrange this
event, and to the Reno Aces for always
providing an outstanding venue.
Members who were not able to make this event
were certainly missed, however, we toasted
without you and will hope to catch you at our
next event to be announced soon.
The chapter can rejoice and celebrate two new
members as of last night, officially paying their
2019 dues, Mrs. Shannon Brady of the Atlantis
Resort Spa Casino, and Mr. David Hargrove of
Reno Tahoe Limousine. The membership drive
also sparked interest from at least 5 of our
member prospects and we hope to have those
esteemed professionals join our club shortly!
With friendship and happiness, Skal!
Skål Kansas City Holds Dinner at
Martin City Brewery Event Space
Our group, Skal Kansas City, had dinner at the
Martin City Brewery Event Space.
Kansas City is truly becoming one of the most
cutting edge cities in regards to food and
beverage. We have more indigenous restaurants
in KC than we do chains, which we LOVE!
Our Skal group is truly lucky to be able to
experience these places as Julie Hensler selects
our spots each month. This past was at a local
brewing company called Martin City
Brewery. They have been touted Kansas City’s
FASTEST growing locally owned
brewery. Here is their story:
We live here. We love here. We brew here.
Martin City Brewing Company was started
because, like so many other craft beer drinkers
in Kansas City, I was thirsty for something new.
I wanted beer that was bigger, bolder and
preferably local.
And I knew I wasn’t alone.
So, in 2014, after years of homebrewing and
business planning, my friend Chance Adams and
I opened a brewery in Martin City. Thanks to an
enthusiastic community, it wasn’t long until we
had a full-blown brewing operation, with
canning and distribution throughout the KC
metro.
This year we’re releasing 20 of those bigger,
bolder, local beers for our community of craft
beer drinkers in Kansas City and beyond. With a
wide selection, I’m certain we have a brew that’s
perfect for you. Keep drinking local.
Cheers!
