Phils Parting ShotWay back In the sixties when I for my sins became Involved in the trials I never ever dreamt that I would belucky enough to be so deeply involved in the tore runners of the events of nowadays What memories I haveof those sounds and pictures resounding from one century and into the present era When Sir Harry Prestonwith such foresight installed that original event I often ponder whether he ever believed that the sea side roadnow world famous would have followed the fortunes of wheeled sport that still continues and remainshistorically to his endeSllOur and foresight in spite of all the difficulties and problems that abound nowadays inthis troubled old world I believe that we still honour his foresight so offer up our thanks to his memory

I recaR with pleasure those post war days of the forties and fifties when the tyros of those days when thecourse stood at the kilometre distance George Brown with his Vincents Nero and then latterly Super Nerovirtually made the event his own always standing those up on the middotShelf up on their toes when George letloose with one of his tail wagging starts as he thundered off the mark Nowadays with the course restricted tothe standard quarter mile the drag racing Influence dominates the scene with the current crop of modernquarter mllers melting the tarmac when they let loose two and three wheelers putting out raw horse powerfigures in excess of two hundred ponies helped along by modern tire technology that is akin to the proverbialsticking to the blanket

Present day legislation restricts outputs via regulations in sound outputs but for all that machines do put upterminal velocities In excess of 170 -180 mph Some advance on the 100 and ten and twenty of just so fewyears past An echo of those past years has recently come to light in an advert for one of the current crop ofauction houses showing one of the events most famous bikes in the past that being Francis Williams ofRottingdean nick named in affection The Learned Professor 01 Sprint the machine being (after many years01 being hidden away) his 500cc Cotton parallel push rod Blackburn sprinter that at one time dominated oldsprints such as Gatwick when active When it does lind a new owner I am sure that if it were entered for aBrighton event it would receive a real old fashioned welcome

To return to todays event we hope to see one of the current crop 01 Moto GP missiles from Suzukiunfortunately we are restricted to a lower sound level than that permitted in other events Suzuki can only bringas a runner one of their current road race jobs which will be keenly watched to see if it might knock that craftycodger Rodger Simmons off his perch In the shoot out

One other to keep an eye on hopefully will be John Renwick from Shoreham who has hurried back fromBonneville Salt Flats where he has been mounting an attack on the sidecar classification world record with hisspecially constructed Vincent streamliner

Hopefully if successful we will announce a result

A good look through your programme will show you that as usual we have provided for your day out in dearold Brighton an excellent programme of some of our countries best straight line tyros and who will asusual battle to get into that exclusive group who close the day with that always top line line up for the fastestsix battle

Our thanks to all those stalwarts who have worked so hard to put on this days excellent sport especiallythe back room boys and girls who are so often taken for granted our thanks also to the City Council and theirworkers who help to make the day especially those who have the unenviable task of putting the drive back toits everyday use and an especial vote of thanks to Messrs Fros1s who notwithstanding all the present daydifficulties for their unstinting support
