A HARVEST OF HOPE Hope Nottingham supports 14 foodbanks around Nottingham, but we really want to help people get to
the point where they don’t need a foodbank. This involves helping people address all the reasons why
they may be struggling. This can include family breakdown, debt, mental illness, unemployment, low
skills and education levels and all sorts of complex issues, quite apart from challenges with the benefits
system. Hope Café provides a focal point for compassionate, holistic support in a friendly environment
to help people overcome all of these difficulties. In many cases a key aim is to help people get paid
work so that they are no longer reliant on welfare. Hope Employment Pathway has made tremendous
progress by helping people improve their skills, increase confidence and become proficient in seeking
and applying for work. In the last year we have directly helped 20 people find paid employment. Many
others have grown in self confidence and self-esteem by engaging in voluntary work experience whist
simultaneously joining in with our compassionate community of volunteers who give so much time and
energy to helping their neighbours. We are so grateful to so many people who join in with us and with
God to help bring a harvest of Hope. Nigel Adams, Director, Honorary Freeman of Broxtowe Borough
A word from the chair 2019 has been
another busy and fulfilling year for Hope Nottingham, with
many individuals and families lifted out of crisis to a better
place where they can establish more control over their lives
and even volunteer to help others in need, having experienced
the same challenges themselves. From a humble start of a
single drop-in cafe 9 years ago the work has grown to 14 food
banks across Nottingham and a wide range of other
programmes: skills development in numeracy, literacy and
computer use; voluntary work experience; job clubs leading to
paid employment; growing vegetables and using surplus fresh
food from supermarkets to provide good value nutritious
meals in a local community cafe; engaging with local
youngsters through a youth club. This acquired experience is
now being shared with new ventures such as community hubs
in Long Eaton and even one in Kenya. All this has only been
possible through the generosity of more than 300 dedicated
volunteers, churches, local councils and businesses. We are
truly grateful to all of you and trust that you receive much
satisfaction from the results of your contributions. I hope that

The Hope Nottingham Family Hope Nottingham is able to achieve so much

RECOGNITION FOR HOPE EMPLOYMENT PATHWAY Hope Employment Pathway has advanced considerably in the last year and is receiving increasing
recognition as a result. The work was nominated for an award by Inspire who promote learning and
arts programmes in Nottinghamshire libraries. Following the success of the job club in Beeston
Library, Inspire have also approached Hope to establish job clubs in other parts of the county. This
aspect of our work has also attracted significant funding from the European Social Fund, as part of
the D2N2 programmes as well as from Asda via the Trussell Trust and most recently by way of a
service level agreement from Broxtowe Borough Council. This is an important development for Hope
Nottingham as we seek to place greater emphasis on helping people equip themselves to overcome
and avoid poverty and crisis. Hope Employment Pathway takes the same approach as all of our work:
by offering unconditional compassion and encouragement, our new friends make great progress.
FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
Hope Job Club continues to go from strength to
strength - helping 15 long term unemployed guests
back into work since January, meaning that after only
nine months we have already had our most
successful year to date. Hope Job Club is currently
located in Beeston (both at Hope House and Beeston
Library) and also at Hope Long Eaton. We have been
able to help people get into all sorts of work
including: civil service, supermarket, management,
care work, catering
and the Methodist
church.

DEVELOPING WORK EXPERIENCE For many years Hope House has offered structured
and supported voluntary work experience to help
people build confidence and skills. This has helped
many people make significant progress towards work.
We are now developing links with local supportive
employers to offer short term voluntary work
placements to support people making the next steps
towards a sustainable career.
This is all part of a growing
programme to help many
more people overcome
dependence on foodbanks
and be able to support
themselves by finding good
jobs.

HOPE COMMUNITY ALLOTMENT GROWS Just a few doors away from Hope House in Beeston is a large, previously disused allotment which we have
been developing for several years. After the early summer this year the Allotment had a bumper harvest. The
purpose of the allotment is to provide fresh produce for the community, especially within our Abundance
Café. It also serves to introduce young people to a work process. It is a part of the jigsaw of skills in readiness
for employment, learning to get along with others and gain work experience and achieve a finished product.
A dedicated team of volunteers are developing the allotment for the
whole community. This includes involvement from children with learning
difficulties. This has been assisted by the addition of a classroom
constructed on site by Mission Direct. Now the children can engage with
classroom activities alongside their practical endeavours. We want to
thank the skilled gardeners who shared their knowledge and their valued
commitment and friendship with the whole community. Michael Singh.

HOPE LONG EATON HARVEST Hope Long Eaton was established in the
spring of 2018, serving the extensive need in
the Petersham Estate. The project has
developed quickly to serve 40 people every
Monday. Citizen’s Advice provides drop-in
support and Hope Job Club is active there.
There have also been numerous community
events helping to bring greater optimism and
confidence to the
community. It is
already experienc-
-ing a wonderful
harvest of
transformed lives. Carl & Becca from Hope

A GREAT YEAR WITH HOPE YOUTH GROUP It has been a busy year at the youth club with
it growing from approx. 20 young people to a wonderful 35 young people that attend most weeks. As the year has
progressed so has the youth group, which is brilliant to see. We have said our goodbyes to amazing volunteers and
said a grateful hello to our new ones but equally acknowledging the volunteers that give up most weeks to support
the youth club. Hope Youth Group works in partnership with The Pythian club who lead awesome football and boxing
sessions. We have had visits also from the PCSO’s and Beeston fire service who have come along to Youth Group to
engage with the young people. Hope Youth Group welcomes all young people from the age of 8. We are a diverse
group in which the main aim is to create a safe environment and offer support to our group. We have a variety of
young people that have behavioural issues etc. but all are loved and cherished. The young people
have grown in confidence and have flourished over the past year which is amazing to be a part of.
Hope Youth Group is flourishing under the leadership of Jade (pictured right with Director, Nigel
Adams). We were delighted to celebrate with Jade as she graduated recently as a youth and
community worker at CYM (Children’s Youth & Mission) college in Bramcote. Following this
success, Andrew Brown has joined the team on a three year placement whilst he trains for the
same degree. This will really help us strengthen this work and make real progress supporting and
mentoring the young people.

TUMAINI (Hope) MUMIAS One of the most wonderful and unexpected highlights of 2019 has
been the development of a partnership with the Anglican Diocese of
Mumias in Kenya. Following a visit in February by Bishop Joseph
Wandera we have been providing coaching and support via Skype to
the bishop and his team as they work towards establishing a project to
serve those in most need in their diocese. They share a vision with
Hope Nottingham to work in unity with other churches
and the wider community to bring hope to those who need it most.
Tumaini is the Swahili word for hope,
so we are overjoyed that Hope
Nottingham now shares partnership
with Hope Mumias.

SPRINGS OF LIFE AT HOPE HOUSE Springs of Life International Church has been a wonderful partner with Hope Nottingham even before Hope
was officially established in 2010. In 2009 Springs of Life performed at an open air gospel concert in Beeston
in partnership with Hope NG9, the forerunner to Hope Nottingham. In 2014 the partnership developed with
the opening of a foodbank at Springs of Life Church in Hockley. This ministry developed well, enabling the
church to build a compassionate community serving local people in need, but early in 2019 it seemed that
disaster struck. Springs of Life were told they needed to move out of their present building. However, God
had an even better plan!! Nigel, the director of Hope Nottingham, recognised that our dear friends at
Springs of Life have so much to offer, and so he invited them to move into Hope House. Since the end of July
Springs of Life have been meeting at Hope House every Sunday, welcoming the local community to come
and worship with them. Members of Springs of Life have also joined in with Hope House volunteers and
staff to serve throughout the week in Hope Café, foodbank and other support services. This is a very exciting
partnership, which we believe will bring great blessings to many.
is a network that promotes collaboration, relationship and
unity among Christian organisations who are working to
tackle poverty in Nottingham. Hope Nottingham shares
the same vision to encourage unity and partnerships
across churches and the wider community. So being a
committed member of Faith Action Nottingham network
is hugely important and a real privilege. FAN meets 3-4
times a year to network, encourage one another with
good news stories, to seek ways of supporting one
another and to pray together. The gatherings are always
a huge boost. Over time as relationships have developed,
opportunities have arisen to work in partnership, to
share expertise and to mentor one another. As FAN
continues to develop we hope and pray that we will be
strengthened in our unity and become more enabled to
be a great blessing to the Nottingham area. FAN is also
developing stronger links with Nottingham City Prayer
and in 2020 they will be hosting a joint event, “The
Church in Action” Celebration and Prayer evening. This is
a great opportunity to celebrate all the amazing work
going on with many partners seeking to bless the city.
HOPE HOUSE DAILY PRAYER Hope House is a Christian Community seeking to welcome everyone and enable all to live abundant lives, with Jesus Christ at the heart of it all. We have short times of prayer at the beginning of each day and at other times. ALL are welcome to join in with us. If you want prayer for anything at any other time, please just ask.
This is an example of our daily morning prayer:-
READING
John 20 21
Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the
Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22
And with that he
breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
WORSHIP SONG
Christ alone, Cornerstone,
Weak Made Strong in the saviour’s love
Through the Storm
He is Lord, Lord of All
BIBLE READING
Psalm 27:4 One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I
seek:that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days
of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek
him in his temple.
THOUGHT
Today as we seek to serve one another: to work, to meet
together and to pray, we become the House of the Lord
together. It is a good place.
LET’S PRAY
A few minutes for everyone to pray as they wish: silently
or aloud. If you would like someone to pray about
anything in particular please just ask.
BLESSING PRAYER
Father God we thank you so much that as we come
together today you are here with us. May we know your
blessings and your peace. AMEN
