Maintaining a true sense of community is vital as we move farther into the 21stcentury. And nowhere is the opportunity to be part of a community moreappealing than in Howard County, Maryland. Ellicott City enjoys a rich andvaried history, from its origin as the tiny trade center of "Ellicott's Mills" to thepresent seat of rapidly urbanizing Howard County.
Three Quaker brothers, John, Andrew, and Joseph Ellicott, of Bucks County,Pennsylvania, chose this picturesque wilderness to establish a flour mill in 1772,four years before the Declaration of Independence was signed. The brothershelped revolutionize farming in Maryland by persuading farmers to plant wheatinstead of tobacco and by introducing fertilizer to revitalize the depleted soil. In1830, Ellicott's Mills became the first terminus of the Baltimore and OhioRailroad outside Baltimore. The old station, which stands today as a museum, hasbeen designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The Ellicotts made significant contributions to the area and the era. They builtroads, bridges and a wharf in Baltimore, introduced the wagon brake and plasteras a fertilizer, erected iron works, a furnace, rolling mills, schools, a meeting house, stores and houses made from beautiful granite.
In 1791, Andrew Ellicott was commissioned to survey the boundaries for thenation's new capital, Washington, DC. He was joined by a free black man andfamily friend named Benjamin Banneker. Banneker worked closely with the citydesigner, L'Enfant. When the Frenchman abandoned the project and returnedhome, Banneker was able to recreate the designer's plans from memory.
By 1861, Ellicott's Mills was a prosperous farming and manufacturing area, andthe site of the courthouse, which was built from 1840–1843 when the HowardDistrict of Anne Arundel County was so designated in 1839. Howard Countybecame an official independent jurisdiction in 1851. In 1867, a city charter wassecured for Ellicott's Mills and the name was changed to "Ellicott City."
Ellicott City's Charter was surrendered in 1935 and its Main Street hasexperienced a gradual change in character from a mixed commercial andresidential area to an almost entirely commercial area today. The boundaries ofthe town were reestablished in 1973 and designated a "Historic District" topreserve and encourage restoration of its old structures.
The community of Patuxent Chase will carry on the tradition of a beautifullylandscaped crossroads community. Patuxent Chase is conveniently located inHoward County, Maryland, with easy access to both Baltimore, MD, andWashington, DC.
