INTRODUCTION.
HE Glossary of the Principal Chinese Postal Expressions compiled by Mr. J.W.H.
Ferguson, during 1906, has been much appreciated and largely used during
^^gpj^cx'tj^g intervening years, but the rapid development of the Service and the
consequent introduction of many new terms and the modifications of old ones
have now rendered thit publication insufficient to meet the requirements of
the Staff.
With a view to the retention of such a publication, steps were taken for the
issue of a new edition. A selection of terms and words was therefore made from the
most up-to-date postal documents, (e.g. Compendium, Circulars, Postal Guide, Postal
Forms, Stationery, etc.), and is now reproduced.
This little work, as it is presented now, will give the members of the foreign
staff an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the various Chinese equivalents of the
commonly used postal expressions, and at the same time promote the adoption of
uniform postal terms throughout the Service. It will probably be found just as useful to
the Chinese as to the Foreign Staff.
The (approximately) 3000 terms which are arranged, as far as possible, alphabeti-
cally, are those most frequently used in postal dealings and the Chinese rendering given
has in each case been chosen for its applicability and appropriateness to postal uses.
In order that the booklet may serve the purpose for which it is intended, it
should be kept up to date; blank pages have therefore been provided to facilitate the
insertion of new words or terms as required, and a blank column has been left on each
page for the romanization of the terms.
