Patt’s Corner: What’s in Your Wallet?Cyber-Monday and Black Friday are behind us now; nevertheless, it is always a good time to talk about cyber-hygiene.

Most of us prefer not to carry around cash, but rather, pay with debit/credit cards.

Credit card numbers on their own are relatively weak forms of authentication and their security has historically relied on the need for the

physical card to be swiped through a payment terminal, something that’s no longer true in today’s credit card hacking.

Chip debit cards have been touted as an upgrade over easily counterfeited magnetic-stripe cards, and it’s true that it would probably be next to impossible for a criminal to mint a counterfeit chip card using data stolen in this way. However, a vulnerability in the widely-used “chip and pin” system has already been exploited to make a cash machine spit out money.

Rapid7 has disclosed the vulnerability to major ATM makers and banks, though it would not specify which. The team said it had not seen any effort to rectify the problem, but that it hoped the firms were investigating the vulnerability. The U.S. Secret Service is warning banks and ATM owners about a new technological advance in cash machine skimming known as “periscope skimming,” which involves a specialized skimming probe that connects directly to the ATM’s internal circuit board to steal card data.

The legacy support for magnetic stripes will continue to allow fraud through bypassing Chip and PIN security, and credit card companies will need to continue to monitor payment card transactions.

We will no doubt continue to shop during the holiday season and beyond, so Cybersec experts have a few suggestions:

Never use a debit card linked to a checking or savings accounts at a retail point-of-sale terminal, gas pump, or non-bank-owned or standalone ATM. Forget about the Visa/MC logo on our ATM card and only use it to get cash like the old days when it was a pure debit card.

Use one (or sometimes two) credit cards for all retail purchases… and those cards are not used for any recurring billing relationships.

Use one card that is used for ALL recurring billing arrangements (whether with utility companies or subscription websites) and is used for nothing else.

This arrangement allows us to have a minimum of disruption when the inevitable fraudulent charges or use at a breached merchant occurs.

Squeezy’s still traveling!

Quick Tips: Green LivingMany household contaminants are brought into your home on the bottom of your shoes. To reduce these harmful substances in your home, you should have good, durable mats at all entrances of your home. Encourage your children and guests to wipe their feet well before entering your home. You can also place cotton rugs inside your doors to collect dust from the outside. Don’t forget the door to your garage as well. For even better protection, consider becoming a shoe-free household. You can set up an area near the entrance of your home for shoe storage.

Last Month’s Answer to: How is 2+2=5 like your left foot?
