Congratulations on 13 years! Spring Cleaning Starts with Clearing Away Risk By now, you’ve likely encountered the buzz surrounding Marie Kondo’s Netflix show and tidying method that challenges each individual to declutter and keep items that only “spark joy”. It’s a whole philosophy that intends to make one give pause about how we can be more mindful of what we hold onto and why and how storage should “pursue simplicity”. While we wish that we could just toss out documents as easily as Marie Kondo tosses out items on her show, legal requirements and retention guides mean that careful tracking, storage & shredding are not only key, but imperative. At DataSafe, we aim to make shredding confidential data as simple as possible. We’ve worked with you on assessing what absolutely needs to stay, how it should be organized, and even more importantly-kept secure. By storing securely your most valuable assets and documents off-site, we provide peace of mind and compliance without the hassle. We can also manage the “clutter” or the myriad of documents that have gathered over time but are no longer required. We can help clear space while preventing risk, costly penalties, and hassle. Please feel free to contact us if you would like any guidance on document retention (see our guide) and how we can assist you with a secure shredding schedule that will add joy. Patt’s CornerData Breach Notification: CA Targets ‘Loopholes’

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra on Thursday announced the proposed law, AB 1130, saying it would close a loophole in the state’s current breach notification law. The state’s current data breach law doesn’t require organizations to notify individuals if their passport number has been

exposed. “Businesses must do more to protect personal data,” Levine says. “AB 1130 will increase our efforts to protect consumers from fraud and affirms our commitment to demand the strongest consumer protections in the nation.” California’s proposed data breach notification changes would add any government-issued identification number to the list of “personal information” that triggers a mandatory state data breach notification, beyond state driver’s license or identification numbers, which are all that the current law explicitly mentions for IDs.

Also, for the first time, the bill would require a mandatory notification in the event that a breach exposed any unique biometric data, including fingerprint, retina, or iris images (The bill would update California state’s definition of personal information as constituting “an individual’s first name or first initial and last name” in combination with several other personally identifiable components such as a social security number, account number, health insurance information, or a driver’s license number.

Last year, California passed AB 375, a privacy measure that requires businesses to disclose the purpose for collecting or selling personal data they collect as well as the identity of the third-party organizations receiving the data. Consumers can also request data be deleted and initiate civil action if they believe that an organization has failed to protect their personal data. California hasn’t shied away from cracking down on organizations that violate privacy rights.

We are pleased DataSafe’s Breach Reporting Service will ensure compliance for any breach or suspected breach at our client’s sites.

Expired Medication? Here’s How Your Pharmacy Should Handle It

If you are involved in the pharmaceutical industry, or work in an organization that handles pharmaceuticals, you know that one of the greatest advantages a medical waste disposal company can offer you, is knowledge and expertise on how to handle medication that has expired. As you know, medications expire all the time and sometimes they even reach their expiration date while they are being stored inside the pharmacy or a clinic. As a pharmaceutical manager it is your responsibility to ensure that these medications are disposed of properly, including the specific regulatory requirements and risks associated with failing to do so correctly. Why is proper disposal of expired medication so important? There are laws in place for medical waste so that these harmful drugs stay out of our water systems and don’t reach the wrong hands. Any unknown drug can be threatening to the public if exposed and consumed.  Managing expired medication ultimately ensures that members of the public don’t obtain and abuse it. Did you know that some medications are considered hazardous? Due to this fact, we need to do whatever we can to help keep our environment safe and protected from such substances. Not everybody realizes that some expired medications qualify as hazardous waste and as a result require special care and proper disposal. Unfortunately, while not very common anymore, there are still some pharmaceutical practices that will toss their old expired medications in the garbage or even down the drain, which immediately poses a health risk and harms our environment. Don’t forget that by doing this, you’re also putting your company at considerable risk of fines and other legal consequences that can damage your reputation and potentially break the bank; neither circumstances any pharmacy wants to be faced with. At WasteSafe we work with many pharmaceutical companies across California, providing quality solutions to assist in segregating pharmaceutical waste. Our clients will receive specialized containers and waste bags to dispose of such waste safely. From there, our team will handle the rest, collecting and transporting this hazardous waste off your property. Call WasteSafe at 888-747-3380.

Green Living: Oven CleaningInstead of using harsh chemicals to clear your clogged up drains, try a more environmentally friendly solution. Pour 1/4 cup (60 ml) baking soda into the drain. Follow with 1/2 cup (125 ml) vinegar. Close the drain and let sit for several minutes. Then flush with boiling water. If there is still a clog, you can rent a plumbers’ snake to feed down the drain. But take care—aggressive use of the plumbers’ snake can damage pipes, so only use as much force as necessary.
