LET US PRAY FOR EACH OTHER

Mission Statement “Our Lady of Lourdes Parish is a family of believers, embraced by the Father’s love, nourished by Jesus in Word and Sacrament, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Inspired by Mary we commit ourselves to live and proclaim the Gospel of Salvation.”

The Sanctuary Candle is lit this week In Memory of Tom P. Moore

From Loreta Moore

One of the Catholic magazines I subscribe to is ‘America.’ A recent article by Daniel Philpott focuses on the President’s Executive Order Advancing International Religious Freedom. Daniel writes: “Many have been waiting for years to hear a president say, “Religious freedom for all people worldwide is a foreign policy priority of the United States. Religious freedom, America’s first freedom, is a moral and national security imperative.” Why is religious freedom a moral imperative? While the pandemic has surged around the world and the United States agonizes over racism and police violence, several hundred Christians have been killed in Nigeria; China has escalated its brutal crackdown on churches and continues to hold a million Uighur Muslims in concentration camps in Western China; and Christians, Muslims, Jews, Bahais and people of other religious traditions suffer “high” or “very high” levels of restrictions on religion in fifty other countries, according to the widely respected Pew Research Center. Much recent research shows that religious freedom mitigates terrorism and civil war, strengthens democracy, enhances economic development, fosters peace, enables reconciliation and advances opportunities for women. Religious repression has contributed to violence, terrorism and instability in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria. Libya, Egypt and other countries that have preoccupied U.S. foreign policy makers in the past two decades. The Executive Order helps to lift the U.S. government’s advocacy of religious freedom abroad into a high-level foreign policy. This order makes religious organizations and communities partners to the government in promoting religious freedom. President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed religious freedom as one of the four freedoms that defined the United States’ aims in the Second World War. After he died, his widow, Eleanor, secured religious freedom’s place in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Let us hope that whoever wins the election in November will carry on this legacy, along with racial justice and protecting the health of our citizens.”

As stated, the above article appeared in a recent edition of ‘America’ magazine. If you are looking for a well-balanced Catholic magazine, I would certainly recommend ‘America.’ Its editor, Father Matt Malone SJ presented our Priests Convocation a few years ago, focusing on the polarization of our world and Church. Who can break through the polarization of the Church? Jesus Christ! “Some people may think,” says Father Malone, “that stressing our unity in Christ – minimizes real and important disagreements. In fact, it makes disagreement possible, for a real argument requires freedom of minds and hearts. When we act out of our faith that the sole source of our unity is not the rightness or wrongness of our ideas but our devotion to a person, then we are more free to disagree with one another precisely because we are more free to be wrong. Our conversation becomes an encounter, rather than mere confrontation. While we may sound different notes, if we listen closely we can hear a certain harmony.” If Christ is our source of unity, our disagreements will be more harmonious!

OUR LADY OF LOURDES CATHOLIC SCHOOL: ENCOURAGE . ENRICH . EMPOWER

Hello everyone! I am Anna Fidelus. I was born and raised in Chicago and went to high school in Goose Creek, SC (a small town outside of Charleston). I completed my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with an ESOL endorsement at the University of Central Florida (Go Knights!) and Masters of Education in Educational Leadership from Saint Leo University. This is my 9th year with the Diocese of St. Petersburg. I have taught 2nd grade, Art (Pre-K through 8th grade), Enrichment, and VPK. During the summer I work with high school students with Junior Achievement and teach them about budgeting, career strategies, and post high school plans.

Growing up, my Catholic faith was always an important part of my life. Those early values my parents shared with me allowed me to become the person I am today. I am a first-generation American with Polish roots. In my free time I travel, spend time with my family, and create Art. The moment I stepped foot on the Our Lady of Lourdes campus, I felt a sense of community. I am beyond thrilled to be a part of this loving family. I am ready to teach some fabulous, flourishing first graders!

Thank You Miss Furey We extend our sincere thanks to Miss Mary Ann Furey for the amazing year of love and devotion she showed our wonderful first grade students. Lovingly referred to by her students as “Miss Awesome” - she truly was! We will miss her as she accepts a new challenge at a school much closer to her residence. We wish her abundant blessings and pray for her continued success.

STEWARDSHIP: TIME | TALENT | TREASURE

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

We Are Salt & Light 2020 ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL

We all have received countless blessings and the gift of faith which God so freely gives us. The theme for the 2020 Annual Pastoral Appeal, WE ARE SALT & LIGHT, Living the Gospel through the Annual Pastoral Appeal, calls us to action to be disciples of Jesus Christ and help to share his love and mercy to all. Please continue to pray for those in need and for those seeking a better life in and through Jesus Christ. With a gift to the Annual Pastoral Appeal, you help our parish to prosper and you give witness to God’s abundant blessings by demonstrat-ing a courageous and grateful response to His call to love and serve one another. No gift is too small and every gift changes a life. Pledge/gift envelopes may be found in the narthex for your convenience.

To date, 439 families have pledged $157,592 toward our required goal of $228,225. We have collected $129,274 of those pledges. To those who have already contributed to the Annual Pastoral Appeal, we thank you. To those who have not yet contributed, please prayerfully consider a gift to the Annual Pastoral Appeal, in thanks-giving for your blessings, knowing that you may be giving hope to those looking for a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.

Do Not Fear You may not know of Stanley Francis Rother unless you happen to live in Oklahoma. Born there to a farming family in 1935, young Stan recognized a calling to the priesthood in his teens. After five years in the seminary he was told he was not studious enough to continue. Fortunately, his bishop believed the best priests were not always the most intellectual, but the most committed. He enrolled the young man at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Maryland. Stanley studied diligently and was ordained in 1963. After five years in parish work in Oklahoma, Father Rother volunteered for the Oklahoma diocesan mission among the Tzutuhil, a Mayan people of the western Guatemala highlands. Father Rother, a strong, hard-working man, ministered to the ordinary spiritual needs of the people while learning the Tzutuhil language and translating scriptures and Mass prayers into Tzutuhil. He helped the people learn to read and write, while a mission radio station transmitted daily language and math lessons. He built a small hospital and worked on plans to improve roads. Guatemalan political power was in the hands of right-wing elites, who also controlled the military. They blamed the Church for “civil unrest” and supporting the rights of the poor. Father Rother was urged to leave and went to Oklahoma for a short visit, but he insisted on returning even though he was a marked man. In 1981 the mission radio station was smashed and its director killed. Catechists and parishioners were beaten, tortured, and killed. Father Rother stayed because he believed Jesus’ words, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul” (Matthew 10:28). He was shot by a death squad in the night. His body was returned to Oklahoma, but at the request of the Tzutuhil people, his heart was returned to be buried where he served and died.

Living Stewardship Now Many missionaries are risking their lives for Christ today. Find a priest, religious, or lay person serving in some dangerous or difficult place and send them e-mails, letters, packages of useful materials, donations, and prayers. Your support can help give them the courage to continue. Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Church is Open for Mass Due to CDC guidelines and state mandates, we are required to social distance, so our seating capacity is reduced. Unless you are seated with immediate family members, please keep a distance of 6 feet from others in the pew. When attending Mass, it is required that you wear a face covering to protect yourself, as well as others around you. We also ask that you use the hospital grade hand sanitizer provided at the entrances, as it is a special formula that will not damage the pews. PLEASE NOTE: The Dispensation from the Sunday obligation to attend Mass remains in effect until further notice and applies to all Catholics. If you consider yourself to be vulnerable, or have underlying health conditions, for your own safety, please continue to remain at home.

If You Were Wondering About Your Offertory

Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the faithful are limiting their Mass attendance, and our offertory is being impacted. Even while you are away from Mass, please remember that the mission of our parish continues, particularly to the poor and vulnerable, during this time of uncertainty and fear. Although we are closed to visitors, we are still working for you, our parishioners, and we are continuing to live stream daily and Sunday Masses for those who cannot attend. We continue to have operating expenses, ministries to support, and staff to pay. Please consider using ONLINE GIVING for your offertory donations, so that our parish can continue its mission. For assistance with Online Giving, please call the Parish Office at (727) 733-3606 or sign up online at https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/429 or go to our parish website. Other Ways to Continue your Offertory: Mail or drop off your offertory envelope to the parish office; bring it to church during open prayer time; use your bank’s online bill pay option; or Text to Give to 727-312-1030. Thank you for your loving and selfless support. We are in the midst of uncertain times. Hopefully, our faith in God and each other remains constant. We are here to serve. If you need to reach out to us, for yourself or others, please do not hesitate to call (727) 733-3606. Let us continue to lift each other up in prayer.
