the rich. However, all people are caught up in their own nightmares, no matter how much money

they have.

This is a short novel, perhaps even a novella, at 165 pages. However, the way it catches a noir

world it does not feel too short. Oates is a master story-teller and while this is not one of her best

 books, it is better than most books you’ll read.
