St. Augustine High School 2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT AND HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

A dream that transformed us. A mission that let us believe.

Dear Friends and Benefactors of St.Augustine High School:

This is my 4th year, as the Prior Provincial of the Province of St. Augustine in California, toagain greet you through this Annual Report, and to gratefully express our continuing and collective appreciation from the entire SAINTS community for your continuing support andfor your most gracious generosity!

At the recent initial gathering of the Saints Board of Directors we reviewed the year past, andwe anticipated the year to come. This is always done in light of our Mission Statement:

Our mission is to provide a Catholic liberal arts education for young men in an environment that promotes the development of mind, heart and body

in the Augustinian tradition.

By helping to form loving disciples of Jesus Christ we communicate to the world the gospel values of community, truth and love.

This statement really invites us to consider all the potential and all the possibilities ahead ofus as we build upon the foundation that has been so ably established for us. As we near the100 -year anniversary of the school’s opening (in 1922), we have so very much to be gratefulfor and so very much to sustain us as we pursue our school’s mission.

The Augustinian core values of Caritas, Unitas, and Veritas provide the context out of whichwe are called to be the best possible stewards of all that is entrusted to us – and to do so onbehalf of all those who desire to share in the awesome "Saints Experience.” With the recentdedication of Raymond Performing Arts Center and the Madruga Music Center, it is now time for us to ensure a vibrant and healthy experience for our present and future Saintsmen.

It is what we do, where we do this, and how we accomplish our mission that allows for thepossibility of truly transformative opportunities, experiences, and growth and development of the students entrusted to our care and to our vision.

Bob Marley memorably said, “Do not forget your history or your destiny.” We truly have the blessing of continuing to build upon a rich and storied history, and upon a generous and passionate ‘family’ of educators, administrators, clergy, alumni, friends, and companions along the way who have made Saints what it is today. Importantly, we know full -well thateverything we are about in the present moment calls us to celebrate our diversity, to lookahead confidently, and to commit ourselves even more firmly to insuring our blessed andtransformative successes for those deserving of the Saints experience.

Let us always begin with a profound sense of gratitude and let usalways proceed by continuing to strengthen our core values of truth, unity, and love that guide us along the way.

Very Rev. Kevin C. Mullins, OSA PRIOR PROVINCIAL OF THE AUGUSTINIANS IN THE WEST

Dear Friends of Saints,

At the beginning of the 21st Century, Saints faced a very challenging future. The Diocese of San Diego had decided to rebuild both The University of San Diego High School andMarian Catholic High School. Marian in the south county would become Mater Dei CatholicHigh School and Uni would move to north county becoming Cathedral Catholic High School.

St. Augustine High School, sitting cozily in -between in North Park, had not added a campus building since 1952, when Dougherty Gym was built. While strong spiritually, academically and athletically, the need to rebuild and modernize Saints was essential, necessary and extreme.

Saints new principal, Fr. John Keller, OSA, understood these two new campuses would provide tough competition for Saints in the future. While the strength of the diocese would be behind these new schools, Saints would primarily have to rely on the love of the Saints Community to rebuild its campus.

Fr. Keller knew Saints was not set up to raise capital for new buildings. During most of its history, the only fund - raising push had come from former principal, Fr. John Sanders, OSA,during the 75th anniversary of Saints founding when an Endowment Fund was established tobegin providing an ongoing source of funding for student financial assistance.

Rebuilding Saints would be a complicated and expensive process. Knowing a change in theadministrative structure was necessary, Fr. Keller examined the administrative make -up ofother Catholic schools, ultimately moving to the President/Principal model which gives the principal the authority to run the internal operation of Saints, freeing the President tomobilize the community for the rebuilding of Saints.

The Board of Directors created an overall plan enlarging and shaping the AdvancementDepartment and hiring a consultant to organize the coming capital campaign. A three -phasebuilding plan was developed and a conditional use permit obtained to initiate the building process.

This endeavor must have seemed daunting and overwhelming to all involved. How wouldthis small school complete a multi -million dollar undertaking to essentially reconstruct the campus? St. Rita of Cascia, the patroness of impossible causes, was enlisted to guidecommunity prayer for a successful completion of the goal. In the early days of organizing the community, Saints very survival must have been on the minds of many people.

Saints rebuilding began in June 2006 with the groundbreaking of Phase I for Villanova andMendel Halls. With the completion of St. Augustine Commons in April 2017 and RaymondCenter for the Performing Arts in June 2018, the Master Plan is now complete. Twelve years of planning, fund-raising and construction resulted in accomplishing the Master Plan in atimely fashion. It is also worth noting that during this time Vasey Hall was renovated and anartificial track and field was built, neither of which were part of the Master Plan.

It should not go unnoticed that as Saints was beginning Phase II, the nation slipped into the second worst recession in history. Despite this calamity, Saints was not deterred. While the process was slowed, the downturn became an opportunity. Serious thought and reviewwas given to our needs and spaces to determine what configurations would work better. There was also an advantage to beginning a campaign when very few non-profits were out raising funds for their building projects.

This Herculean task could not have happened without the generosity of so many. In fund-raising circles it is about soliciting "time, talent, and treasure" from potential benefactors.Looking back at the vast organization of the capital campaign efforts, the loyal support of those Directors who planned St. Augustine Commons, the Architect and the ExecutiveBuilding Committee who oversaw the building of Phase II and III and the hundreds of families who became involved in the capital campaigns, it is inspiring to see the direct results of our community, bound together in love for one another, to provide a Saints education for future generations of boys.

As the President these past 12 years, I have joyfully witnessed the spirit of God moving fromyour hearts in support of others. As St. Augustine taught us, in our best moments our heartsreflect God’s love and it is through our friends we learn about God. The great Bishop of Hippotaught this to his friends and I personally experienced this through all of you. In so many conversations, God’s presence was discernible; it touched me, strengthened me and changedme. I pray that many of you had the same experience. Your gifts were not transactions, but amatter of the heart – the full expression of your love of neighbor and God.

In an unpredictable, mystical way, the Master Plan helped create an even tighter SaintsCommunity that has allowed all of us a moment to express our thanks to our Creator for delivering each of us to this place. Thank you for making the impossible possible, your undeniable faith in the one true God and for moving Saints into a position of leadership, not only in the Catholic community, but the secular community as well. Each of you in your own unique way has helped turn a dream into a beautiful oasis for young men.

Thank you!

those that wish to attend, and not be limited by economic circumstances. After all, as thefounding principles of Saints admonish us, we should make a special effort to “ensure that the student body is not limited to the affluent and privileged.”

As a result, our focus in the coming years is to increase our Endowment Fund which providesimmense help to our Tuition Assistance program. Over 50% of our students currently receiveaid, and we want to broaden that capability, to assist even more students, and their families,in attending Saints. Saints currently provides close to $3.0M in making the Saints dreambecome a reality. We want this unique school to be available to as many families from diverse circumstances as possible.

We graduates of Saints remember fondly the friendships and sense of brotherhood thatbecame infused in each of us. We wish to provide that feeling of oneness and fraternity to as many young men as we possibly can.

As St. Augustine admonished us: “Find out how much God has given you, and from it take what you need; the remainder is needed by others.”

We’ve had a mighty assistance from the Holy Spirit over these past 96 years – the Good Lordhas certainly blessed us abundantly in this journey. Now, let’s work together, as we have done so many times in the past, in making the Saints Experience available to all those “who want to be Saintsmen” through our support of the Endowment Fund endeavor.

Thank you!

Annual Report Message from the Chairman of the Board:

As St. Augustine High School enters its 96th year of existence, there is much to reflect on but there is one constant – throughout that entire period of time Saints has endeavored to educate young men in the Augustinian Tradition of Unitas, Veritas, Caritas – Community,Truth, Love – turning young boys into men with an appreciation of others, and the goodness to do great things in the community.

As we have heard, and seen, over those many years – Saints is a special place with an atmosphere that was created and nurtured by the Augustinian Order. It is their values that has separated and made manifest this great institution that distinguishes us, surely, from other educational endeavors. We are special!

We have been blessed to have a visionary administration, and a dedicated faculty and staff that always endeavors to ensure our students are provided with the best opportunities to promote the development of their minds, hearts, and bodies – to become those young menwe wish them to be.

Thanks to the entire Saints community – students, parents, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, donors – we have completed the physical transformation of Saints into an environ-ment we can all be proud of. Think about the journey as we have transformed the physicalappearance of the school while continuing to enrich its traditions in academics, athletics, and the arts.

Over the last 20 years Saints has adhered to a plan of improving the campus – completingMendel and Villanova Halls, resurfacing the football field, rehabbing Vasey Hall, building the Commons, and just recently transforming Dougherty gym, where so many of us graduateshad so many fond memories, into a state of the art Performing Arts Center.

Uncommon vision by the administration, strengthened by the values and steadfastness of the Augustinians, has allowed us to create this wonderful physical landscape of a school.

As we look with pride at all that has been accomplished, we now turn our attention intoensuring that this remarkable institution, St. Augustine High School, can be available to all

RAYMOND CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

The Raymond Center for the Performing Arts was made possible through the generosity ofRon Raymond ’64 and his wife Sue. Dear Parents and Friends,

The most notable thing about the beginning of our 96th academic year at St. Augustine High School is the new building, home to the Edward and Lucile Madruga Music Center and Raymond Center for the Performing Arts. Now, as we start a new year with new facilities, is a wonderful time to renew our commitment to Catholic education in the Augustinian tradition.

Recently, I have reflected on how some things in our “new” school have remained unchanged, particularly the excellence of the “Saints Experience.” The combination of ourCatholic/Augustinian heritage, a caring and distinguished faculty, a rigorous curriculum, thriving visual and performing arts, and a winning athletic tradition has enabled St.Augustine High School to continue its pursuit of excellence.

However, our dreams for a continuation of this fine Saints tradition relies upon a collaboration of efforts. Right now, we are writing the next chapter in the Saints story, transforming St. Augustine High School and taking it to the next level of excellence. With your support and encouragement, we will continue to provide great faith-filled education and be known throughout the region for accepting boys and graduating men who change the world.

Yours in the Spirit of Catholic Education,

James HorneP R I N C I P A L

Salutatorian Address 2018

WE BECAME EXPERTS IN DOING

By Jason Misleh

Good morning. As we close ourBaccalaureate Mass I would like to welcometo our families, friends, teachers, faculty,Augustinian friars, members of the Class of1968, and of course my fellow graduatingSaintsmen to our graduation ceremony.Throughout these past four years my Saintsbrothers and I have been answering questions. Not everyone was asked the samequestions, but one confronted all of us thefirst second we walked on campus. What arewe going to do here? Upon reflection, I seewe have answered this question like a goodold math challenge problem; with manyunique solutions but only one final answer. Here is one example of that answer. Severalyears ago a young girl named Kimi was diagnosed with life-threatening cancer.Being only 9 years old Kimi had much shestill wished to do, but above all she wanted to learn to play guitar. Well one Saintsman ofour class heard her wish, and volunteered his time and talents to teach her. He spentmonths with her explaining how to tune, read sheet music, and play with a pick. Evenafter she learned though, he pondered howhe could more completely fulfill her dream. After much thought and planning, he organ-ized a concert for Kimi to play live in front ofan audience. This show was attended, in substantial numbers, by other Saintsmencoming out to support her. And the music, strummed to the tune of “Yellow Submarine,”was breath-taking. Stories like this are perfectexamples of how the conviction to turnthought into action is at the heart of ourSaints" spirit. Action, guided by our faith andAugustinian values of Unitas, Veritas, andCaritas, was our answer.

Community, our first core value, was one of our class’ most remarkable achievements. We put the effort into creating that rare, enriching community that is fully welcoming,

fully involved, and without social barriers.A simple walk through campus would revealplenty of evidence. You would see a roomfull of clay-caked seniors teaching eachother to craft elephant- shaped teapots. Youwould see us practicing the trombonetogether and operating DJ stations. Youwould see lunch food experiments and oncea year, jousting. We also fostered our bondthrough a healthy competitive spirit, asshown by our successes in academic com-petitions like Science Olympiad, debates likeMock Trial, and nearly continuous sportingevents. Passions have never been higher thanin intramural dodge-ball. Together we led thePit to be louder, prouder, and more colorfulthan ever. Our cheers and chants made his-tory as they shook the walls of the new Rev.Sanders Gym for its first basketball season. Most importantly though, we collectivelygrew in our faith. Celebrating weekly Massgave us time to slow down and reflect on themost important piece of our lives. By sharingin the sacraments together too we receivedGod’s grace as a community. These experi-ences are what have made us a lasting family.

Furthermore, as Saintsmen we relentlesslypursued the truth. We first found truth byenhancing our intellectual horizons. For us,that went beyond what was laid out in theplanner, because we actively sought out morelearning. When the AP Physics C course wasdiscontinued for a year, members of this class revived it. We also raced homemaderobots, made small dogs with a 3D printer, and learned Mandarin. We pursued truthacross borders, sending Saintsmen to live inPanama, intern in Waterford, and visit theHoly See in Rome. In these places and athome within our cultural clubs we exploreddifferent viewpoints and became worldly. Themost valuable truths we learned however, were God’s truths. A religious educationengaged us in meaningful conversations ofethics, morals, and our calling as Christians.Annual retreats like KAIROS gave us unparal-leled opportunities to explore our beliefsand learn about each other in confidential, highly personal settings.

ENDOWMENT FUND UPDATE

St.Augustine High School Announces a $500,000 Planned Gift From the Estate of Lucile Madruga in Support of Financial Assistance

for Underserved Saints Families

President Ed Hearn recently announced that a Planned Gift from the estate of Mrs. LucileMadruga, was made to the school’s Endowment Fund in her effort to support the work of the Order of St. Augustine at Saints. The Very Reverend Kevin Mullins, OSA stated,“Gifts such as Lucile’s strengthen the ability of Saints to fulfill its mission of ensuring that all boys whodesire and have the academic background to be admitted to Saints can attend – regardless offinancial ability.”

A growing Endowment Fund is the goal of all established private secondary schools as well as colleges and universities. Gifts donated to this fund are restricted to the purpose of the Endowment. The gift goes into the Endowment and by law can never be withdrawn. Theonly funds that may be used are investment gains from the Endowment. This fund at Saints isoverseen by the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee and is managed by a professional firm. Annually, Saints also undergoes an audit, by an independent firm, which provides additional oversight.

Ed Hearn noted, “Lucile’s gift would push the Endowment Fund value to over $5,000,000 when it is distributed for students’ financial assistance.” This year the Endowment Fund generated $197,480 for financial assistance. Contributions to this Fund are given in perpetuity,or said in another way, “It is a forever gift!” Decades from today, Lucile’s gift will be contributingbetween $20,000 to $25,000 to financial assistance annually. There will be untold bright andmotivated boys receiving this scholarship. The impact upon their lives will be transformational.

We know an education experience provided by Saints is a much different education than most schools offer. We call this The Saints Experience. It forms thoughtful competent citizens, leaders of conscience, and reflective Christians who will be in future positions that benefit the entire community.

THE BACK STORY OF THE MADRUGA FAMILY

Lucile happened upon Saints as an answer to her son Robert’s failing grades at their local public school in the 1950’s. She had to solve this problem alone as Edward, her husband, was a long - range tuna fisherman and was often gone months at a time. While discussing this issue with friends, St. Augustine High School popped up in the conversation. As it turned out, a number of her friends had boys who were attendingSaints and her friends spoke highly of the school.

When Robert returned from a summer fishing trip on his dad’s tuna boat he was told he would repeat the 10th grade at Saints. According to Robert, Saints made all the difference! His teachers, many who were Friars, demanded Robert get serious and focuson his work. He would later graduate from the University of San Diego and go on to studylaw at the same school. Upon finishing studies, Robert served as a long time DeputyDistrict Attorney and is currently an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego.

Robert’s entrance into Saints began a life-long relationship between the Madruga family and St. Augustine High School. When her great - grandson, Charlie graduated in 2013,the legacy of the Madruga family continued and, as Robert reflected,“was most pleasing to Lucile.”

“My mother had courage to be herself. She faced life’s challenges and

seized life’s opportunities gracefully. She took care of her young family, while

her husband Edward was away in the Pacific during WWII, and when he was

gone for months at a time as a commercial fisherman. Her generous nature

touched both family and friends, and her generosity gave her a quiet joy.

I think that joy comes from influencing a person’s life forever.”Robert Madruga, ’57

To honor Lucile, the east scoreboard in the Fr. John Sanders, OSA ’68 Gymnasium was named in Honor of Lucile Madruga, and a financial assistance scholarship in Lucile and her husband Edward’s name will be awarded annually to a boy who would otherwise

not be able to attend Saints.

The south-facing clock on the tower of the Commons was a collaborative gift toSaints from the classes of 1968 and 2018.

It commemorates the occasion of the 50th reunion of the class of 1968 and

the graduation of the class of 2018.

WE BECAME EXPERTS IN DOINGContinued from pg. 9

Finally, we spent four years exercising ourendless capacity to love, and a love for Godand His children is nowhere more apparentthan at Saints. We shared our love with thepoor and vulnerable by feeding the home-less at St. Vincent de Paul’s and visiting theHogar Infantil orphanage. We donated ourfood, toys, and blood to the collections weorganized. Our love for each other and thosein need built up clubs like Fifa for theOrphans and Key Club. The small and bigkindnesses we did for each other every day, such as tutoring, welcoming everyone to soccer games on the field, or just listening in times of need, are the proof that Caritaspermeates the air at Saints. I could go onabout how we made our Saints experience, but I could never finish.

So from all this, it is easy to see that whenconfronted with the question of what wewould do at Saints, this class readily gave itsanswer, saying “WE will become experts atdoing good work. Amazing, inspiring, help-ful, Catholic stuff.” And we have fulfilled thatpromise, and there is no doubt that we willcontinue turning thought into loving, wide-spread, and impactful action.

Our coming achievements will only be morespectacular and more life - changing. I amentirely confident that God’s Earth is going to look much, much better in the futurebecause of the Saints Class of 2018. Thankyou, and congratulations to the Class of 2018.
