A different kind of Revolution
SWBAT: explain how inventions have impacted people’s lives
How do important inventions affect people’s lives?
• Think about important inventions from the last 30 years…
• How have they improved life?• How have they created new problems?
What effects do inventions have?
The Industrial Revolution• 1750 to 1850• changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining,
transportation, and technology greatly effected social, economic and cultural conditions
• improved quality of life for many, but created new problems for society to deal with
Life before the Industrial Revolution
• Most lived as farmers • Made most of their own things and relied on
their local community to provide them with what they needed – no way to transport goods and services– As a result, most people live in the country, not
cities• Use of human and animal strength, the
elements for production• Children had to work for the family to survive
Transportation before the Industrial Revolution
• No paved roads, travel by horse/carriage– Dirt roads became impassable during rainy
weather• No fast travel = limited communication– News spread by travelers or paid messengers
Manufacturing before the Industrial Revolution
• Small guild shops – craftsmen produce things like leather, jewelry, silverware, weapons in towns
• Everything else produced in homes– Family worked together to make it– Given raw materials by an entrepreneur, put in the
labor, then trade the finished product for $$– Called the “putting out system” or the “cottage
industry”
For MOST people
• Life was HARD.• Revolved around the agricultural seasons,
lived in constant fear of crop failure• Malnutrition• Most produced little and earned little• Outside of cities, few opportunities for
investment
