time and a promise of closeness. It gives us time to see our current state of affairs in complete honesty… It gives us time to compare this present snapshot with an image of where we would like to be, a place we feel God wants us to find.” We have gathered as a community of faith to celebrate the ministry of a good pastor. What does a “snapshot” of Gustavus Adolphus look like now? And how shall we grow closer to God this Lent? This is a clearing season for our congregation, a time for reflection, and a time to begin to imagine how God is calling us into our next “season” of mission and ministry. We are held, always, by God who has called us to faith, witness and service in the name of Jesus Christ, and empowered to do this all by the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God. Pastor Bonnie Wilcox

LENT: A Clearing Season As a community of faith, we have said “fare well” and goodbye to one of our pastoral leaders, Rev. Hans Dahl. In the 122 year history of Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, six years is relatively brief. But it IS a part of our history, and six years to those who are present now and active in this community is long, memorable and relevant. And we give thanks to God for his time of mission with us. We send him off with our blessings, our thanks, and in the knowledge that his time with us will benefit a congregation in need of his gifts. How shall we be now? The witness of a healthy congregation is moving into a future held by God. We have received new members in February (see their names on page 7). We are gathering weekly for worship, for community, and for mission. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper (holy communion). We mark the season of Lent with midweek worship, small groups to talk about the life of faith, adult mentors are meeting one-to-one with our confirmation students, and we’ve given another evening of our time with Loaves & Fishes and Feed My Starving Children. Our mission continues into a future held by God; even as we allow ourselves time to grieve. My personal devotions this Lent are from a book, A Clearing Season, by Sarah Parsons. She says the church year’s season of Lent our annual invitation to come closer to God. “Lent,” she writes, “offers a gift of

The Council of the church will be partnering with our Synod (the Saint Paul Area Synod) of our national denomination (the ELCA) to prayerfully consider how and when to call a new associate pastor now that Pastor Hans Dahl has received a new call. On February 13, members of the church council and Pastor Bonnie attended a workshop at the Synod offices, Calling the Called. This quarterly gathering of congregations who are planning to call a pastor provides direction and support for this process. During the month of March, we anticipate that an interim pastor – one who is trained for serving congregations

in transition – will be called by the Synod to serve at Gustavus Adolphus.

This is a preliminary step to provide space for deeper prayer and conversation about the leadership needs of our community of faith for the future. Your prayers for our leaders and our congregation is needed and appreciated.

Children always pay attention to things that cause pain, suffering, loss, hurt or death. Take cartoons, for instance. Children will watch Tom and Jerry non-stop if you let them, and if truth be told, many children’s programs have a lot of violent scenes.

So children do need adults to help them interpret the pain, suffering, loss, hurt or death they watch, observe, or experience. Without a loving, healthy, and compassionate interpretation from a parent or trusted adult children will internalize, misunderstand, and try to imitate the very worst aspects of the violence they witness.

Holy Week provides a challenge for Christian parents, especially those who only come to church during this week. How do we explain the suffering of Jesus? Here are seven points that may be helpful in talking to your child about holy week. 1. Jesus suffered because there are times when

7 Ways to Explain Holy Week to Children

we reject the truth, and choose to do the wrong rather than right thing. 2. Jesus’ death shows that he was willing to die rather than deny the truth of his experience of God. 3. Death happens – everyone will die. 4. Ask your child to explain some of his or her understanding of the death of Jesus. You may learn something. 5. How we live is the most important thing. Jesus lived a life loving God, loving the poor, and telling others that it was more important to be honest, kind, true, good, and forgiving. Some people did not like that. 6. God did not wish the suffering of Jesus. God

does not like to see anybody suffer. However, God does not interfere with our free will. Jesus freely gave his life and human beings freely punished him and killed him. 7. Life is stronger than death, love greater than hate, and hope more powerful than despair. This is what we believe and celebrate. All of Jesus’ suffering, pain and death led to a more forgiving, compassionate, and life-giving world.

Hopefully, parents and children can change their lives for the good as they observe and talk about the

events of Holy Week.

The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes Found in all four New Testament gospels, the story in this inspiring musical reveals how one young boy with five loaves of bread and two fish, and an apparent willingness to share leads to an event so startling that members of the crowd wanted to proclaim Jesus as King. Day of Grace

In earlier articles I have mentioned how one person can see a need and make a difference. One such person was Pastor Tom Hanson, who spends a couple months each

year in the Bega Kwa Bega office in Tanzania. He knew how hard the 180 pastors work for a very small salary, how little money they have to run their parishes, how it was so difficult to meet the expectations placed upon them and not receive any affirmation for their work.

Pastor Tom thought it would be a good idea to bring the pastors together to relax, have fun, enjoy one another, laugh, be thanked for the work they were doing and encouraged to take care of themselves. They worshipped, danced, prayed. Members of a medical team from America did individual health assessments – blood pressure, glucose tests for diabetes, physical examinations, and results were shared with each pastor. Doctors and pastors asked questions of each other to better understand their needs. The results of tests were so appreciated by the pastors; their request was that their spouses be included another time! Interestingly, many were in need of reader glasses!

With no place to accommodate that large a group, it was divided into three separate gatherings in January. 160 of the 180 pastors attended and were overwhelmed by the support for their hard work. There were talks about stress…a major issue in the live of all of them, and some coping skills were shared.

Global Mission News

Day of Grace was done in memory of Dr. Benjamin Ngede, the first pastor in the Iringa Diocese to visit St. Paul. He died a much too early death, one that did not need to happen if only he had received good medical care and his health conditions better managed. It is to this end that Pastor Tom took an active step to provide a caring and loving support for our Tanzanian clergy.

A Day of Grace – a need observed and a need met! Our Tanzanian friends could hardly find words to express their appreciation and give God the glory! Keep our clergy around the world in your prayers. They need to know that they are appreciated for their efforts to share Christ with their communities.

Explaining Holy Week—Theme: Reenacting the Passion of Our Lord

Thursday. Jesus and the disciples ate the Passover in the upper room. They ate it early, which was not uncommon. Judas left during the meal. Jesus and the remaining disciples adjourned to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed and the disciples kept falling asleep. Judas arrived to betray Jesus, who spent the rest of the night being tried by the Sanhedrin and by Pilate. The following morning, which was still the same day by Jewish reckoning, the Crucifixion took place just as the Passover lambs were being slaughtered in the Temple. Later the disciples realized that in giving them the bread and pronouncing it His body, Jesus Himself had been the Passover lamb at the Last Supper. Jesus died on the cross and was buried before sunset. So Friday was first day that Jesus lay in the tomb.

Saturday: the Jewish Sabbath Jesus rested in the tomb on the Sabbath. According to Matthew

Holy Week begins on April 1, 2012, and ends on April 7, 2012. Observances began in Jerusalem in the earliest days of the Church, when devout people traveled to Jerusalem at Passover to reenact the events of the week leading up to the Resurrection.

Egeria was a Christian who traveled widely during the period of 381-385 and wrote about Christian customs and observances. She described how religious tourists to Jerusalem reenacted the events of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday afternoon, the crowds waved palm fronds as they made a procession from the Mount of Olives into the city. The tourists, would then take the customs home with them. Holy Week observances spread to Spain by the fifth century, to Gaul and England by the early seventh century. They didn’t spread to Rome until the twelfth century.

The purpose of Holy Week is to reenact, relive, and participate in the passion of Jesus Christ. Holy Week is the same in the eastern and western Church but because eastern Christians use the Julian calendar to calculate Easter, the celebrations occur at different times.

Palm Sunday (or Passion Sunday), the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem.

Holy Thursday (or Maundy Thursday), the institution of Communion and the betrayal by Judas.

Good Friday, the arrest, trial, crucifixion, death, and burial of Jesus Christ.

Holy Saturday, the Sabbath on which Jesus rested in the grave.

We can reconstruct Holy Week from Scripture: Friday: Preparation Day, the Passover The disciples arranged for the Passover meal, which took place after sundown on

28:1, Mark 16:1-3, and Luke 23:56-24:3, the day before the Resurrection was a Sabbath. This is the second day that Jesus lay in the tomb.

Sunday: the first day of the week, the Festival of First Fruits On the third day, Jesus rose from the grave. It was the first day of the week and the day after the Sabbath. The first day of the week is the Jewish name for Sunday. Sunday is also the eighth day after the creation in Genesis, so Paul describes Jesus’ Resurrection as the first fruits of the new creation in 1 Corinthians 15:20-23.

Therefore, it is the Christian tradition that the Crucifixion took place on a Friday, that Jesus rested in the tomb on Saturday, the Sabbath, and rose from the grave on Sunday. Roughly speaking, the western Church consists of Protestants (Pastor Bonnie’s Note: GA is part of the ELCA, a denomination of the Protestants), Catholics, and Anglicans. The eastern Church consists of the Eastern Orthodox churches, the Oriental Orthodox churches, and the eastern-rite churches affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Copyright ©1995-2012 by the Rev. DEADLINE for April Newsletter: Monday, March 5

Members of the Care Team will be inviting 30-40 other people in our community to conduct a survey to gather information from the older adults at GA. It will confirm contact information, the needs and concerns of older adults, ways that older adults can use their talents in ministry. Please consider being a part of this fact-finding group. As our “Senior Spirit” model of ministry, we have purchased multiple copies of Rev. Richard Genzler’s book, “Designing an Older Adult Ministry.” Contact the church office, Joyce Miller, Nancy Johnson or Wes Johnson if you would like to help with this project.

Senior Spirit: Older Adult Survey

GA Newsletter submission deadline for the upcoming month is listed above. Send to Linda at [email protected]
