HOSTING VESPERS ON SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY – MARCH 20.

Our St. George Serbian Orthodox Church hosted Vesper Servicescommemorating Sunday of Orthodoxy at 5:00 PM. Six OrthodoxPriests from the Greater Cincinnati Orthodox Churches participated inthe Services. The Russian Choir sang responses beautifully underthe direction of Dr. Kurt Sander.

A delicious Lenten Supper was served after Vesper Service in ourChurch Hall. So many, many visitors complimented our ladies for themost delicious Lenten Presentation. Thank you, especially toProtinica Gordana, and to all of our Parishioners who brought foodand wonderful desserts for this momentous occasion. We can bevery proud of how we presented our hospitality to our OrthodoxBrothers and Sisters in Cincinnati.

"St. John Chrysostom, in hisCatechetical Sermon that we readat the Divine Liturgy on the day ofthe Lords Resurrection, writes:"Having encountered Christ, Hellwas embittered, abolished,mocked, overthrown andenchained. Every Christian cannow ask: O Death, where is thysting? O Hell, where is your victo-ry?"

"Hell was embittered" because itno longer has power over many,to whom Christ the Son of Godbrings the Good News about thepossibility to enter Heaven.Christ preached only three daysin Hades. That which the Saviorpreached to people for threeyears, He explained to the soulsfor only three days.

This victory of Christ over death,hell, Satan and sin is so powerful-ly resounded among the first fol-lowers of Christ, that those who,having understood that Christtruly resurrected and they them-selves were "filled with the Holy

Spirit", spread the joy of theGospel throughout the wholeworld. These people, up until thispoint uneducated fishermen,became the personification ofspiritual strength and with thehelp of Him Who rose from thedead, as well as through theblood of the martyrs for Christ,shook up the foundation of thepowerful Roman Empire.

Our desire for this year s celebra-tion of the Feast of Feasts, theResurrec¬tion of our Lord andSavior Jesus Christ, is that "all beas one" and, for the sake of theResurrection, as the foundationof our faith, we firmly confessfaith in Christ, our Creator,Redeemer, Resurrector andSavior.

May the Lord resurrect in us dur-ing these all-victorious days, thatwhich is good and beneficial forour souls! May the Resurrectionreaffirm faith within us, may itwarm our hearts and fill our soulswith every good thing, in order toworthily glorify and sing unto HisHoly and Bright Resurrection.

ХРИСТОС ВАСКРСЕСвети Златоусти у својојКатихетској речи, коју слушамо наСветој Литургији на данВаскрсења, каже: „Сусревши се саХристом, ад се ражалости, би раз-рушен, исмејан, укинут, свезан.Сваки верујући сада може да гаупита: Где је смрти жалац твој, гдеје, аде, победа твоја?"

„Ражалости се ад" јер немашевише власти над многима, којимаХристос, Син Божји, донесе благувест о могућности уласка у Небо.Само три дана проповедао јеХристос у аду. То што је људимаСпаситељ проповедао три године,душама је све објаснио само за тридана.

Ова победа Христова над смрћу,адом, Сатаном и грехом тако јеснажно одјекнула међу првимследбеницима Христовим, који су,разумевајући да је Христос заиставаскрсао, и „испунивши се Духом

Светим" пронели радост јеванђелс-ку по целој Васељени. Ови, дотада, неуки рибари, постали суоличење духовне снаге, горостаси,који су уз помоћ Васкрслога, и крозкрв мученика за Христа, уздрмалитемеље моћне римске империје.

Наша је жеља, поводом овогодиш-ње прославе Празника над Празни-цима, Васкрсења Господа и Спасанашега Исуса Христа, „да сви једнобудемо" и, због Васкрсења, каотемеља нашег веровања, снажноисповедамо веру у Христа, Творца,Искупитеља, Васкрситеља иСпаситеља нашега.

SUNDAY OFORTHODOXY IN

CINCINNATI

For over one thousand years,Orthodox Christians have observedthe Sunday of Orthodoxy. The firstSunday of Great Lent is commonlyknown among Orthodox Christiansas The SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY.This important day has been estab-lished by Orthodox Christians tohonor the memory of the multitude ofmartyrs, saints, clergymen, men andwomen; both princes and princessesand commoners alike, who sacri-ficed their lives for what Orthodoxfaithful refer to as “The Church ofour Fathers”. This very importantday is especially important becauseof the commemoration of theRestoration of the Holy Icons, whichprevious to 843 AD icons had beenremoved from churches by govern-ment edict. Byzantine emperors,having been influenced by hereticalconcepts, did not allot the public useand veneration of icons. TheOrthodox Church teaches us thaticons are the windows of Heavenfrom where Saints look down uponus to protect us and to intercede withChrist for our salvation. This day isespecially important for OrthodoxChristians, to commemorate thisevent, recognize the importance oficons, and to reflect on the upcomingspiritual journey of Lent.

On Sunday March 20, 2016, the St.George Serbian Orthodox Church inCincinnati Ohio was packed with

faithful parishioners from variousOrthodox churches throughout theCincinnati and Northern Kentuckyarea. Very Reverend Petar Petrovicwas the host priest at St George,and he eagerly welcomed concele-brants Fr. Steven Kostoff, (parishpriest of Christ the Saviour-HolySpirit Orthodox Church (OCA), Fr.Bill Cassis (parish priest of HolyTrinity-St Nicholas Greek OrthodoxChurch), Fr. William Redmon (StNicholas Greek Orthodox Church),Fr. Daniel Marhsall (St. GeorgeRussian Orthodox Church), Fr. PaulAkmolin, (St George RussianOrthodox Church, and DeaconAleksander Petrovsky (St GeorgeRussian Orthodox Church). The St.George Russian Orthodox ChurchChoir was present to sing during theVespers, under the direction of ChoirDirector Dr. Kurt Sander. The choirwas fantastic and Fr. Petrovic specif-ically mentioned at the conclusion ofVespers that the choir filled thechurch with such a great sense ofprayer and that he felt he was inheaven. Fr. Steven Kostoff, also aprofessor of theology at XavierUniversity gave a nice sermon onthe importance of Lent, and thenecessity for Orthodox Christians tounite in this time of worldly uncer-tainty. Aleksander Jovic, parishionerat St. George Serbian Church whoworks professionally in the film andmedia industry was on hand to cap-ture this monumental event withphotographs and video. Servicebooks were prepared and providedby Fr. Petar Petrovic.

EASTER EGGS

On Easter Day, the faithful greeteach other with “HristosVoskrese”(Christ is Risen), and“Vaistinu Voskrese” (Indeed, He isRisen!), and exchange red or brightlycolored eggs. (Only the women of thehousehold customarily colour theeggs).According to tradition, MaryMagdalene having arrived in Rome toexplain Christ's Resurrection toEmperor Tiberius, bestowed uponhim the gift of a red egg. »For, the eggin and of itself is a dead thing, butunder the influence of the warmth itreceives under the hen, life developswithin it and a live chick hatches fromit, the chick having the strength toescape its tomb - the shell and enterthe world - just as Jesus revived Hisdead body and rose from the grave.Red is the colour of joy, because ofthis joyous event.

There is another variant of this tra-ditional story: Mary Magdalene took asmall basket of eggs to the city withher and met Pontius Pilate on thestreet. She bravely approached himand greeted him with the words:»Hristos Voskrese« (Christ is risen!).Pilate was surprised - but was notpersuaded. Mary Magdalenerepeated the same greeting to him.Pilate, looking at the eggs in the bas-ket, said: »If these eggs turn red - I'llbecome a believer!« He had barelyfinished uttering these words whenboth Pilate and Mary Magdalene sawthat the eggs in the basket hadindeed turned red.
