BREAKING NEWS!!! A robber broke into the local museum and stole informational papers on painters from the 15th century to the 19th century!! Researcher believe that the information can still be found but they need your help! YOU have been hired on a special assignment to travel through time and gather information regarding famous painters of the past. This journey will take you through time to visit various famous artists hometowns (websites) and learn about that painter’s life and unique painting style. You must bring along a sketchbook to keep notes and to create their artist emulation paintings in to bring back to the museum. You will play the role of; an explorer, an artist, researcher, and journalist on this WebQuest. Once you have completed the journey and artist sketchbook, you will choose two of the three final projects to complete and present to the museum staff.

By the end of this excursion you will have traveled through time and successfully:

Learned about painters and their styles from the

15th century until the 19th century;

Compiled a journal/artist book with artist information and emulations of their paintings;

Chosen two of the three projects and produce them

1. First Project : Decide on several (at least 5) topics to categorize these eight famous artist in an Excel spreadsheet.

2. Second Project: Create a flyer for one of the famous painter’s gallery opening using his style in Publisher.

3. Third Project :Students will create a short (10-15 slides) PowerPoint presentation of an artist visited and how his works of art/style affected the future of painting.

1. Begin your journey by breaking your journal up into eight sections. These sections will represent the eight artist you will visit on this journey.

2. Label each section with one of the following titles on each: Da Vinci, Raphael, Monet, Van Gogh, Mondrian, Picasso, Dali, and Warhol.

4. Now it is time to begin your journey. One by one, visit each website or hometown belonging to every artist on this list and gather information and facts about that artist. Be careful about selecting information because these journal will help to complete your final projects. There will be time to paint your emulations at the end of each class period.

In completing this BLAST FROM THE PAINTING PAST WebQuest, you will gain a stronger understanding and deeper appreciation for famous painters from the 15th century through the 19th century, their styles, and how their work affected the world of painting. This lesson, in combination with the other three lessons of the unit, will teach you about communicating visual through art, how to use techniques and materials, and finally give students an array of art history knowledge.

This lesson was developed as part of the Discovering art History unit for ninth grade students. This unit explores a wide variety of artist, sculptures, artworks, and architecture from around the world.

Students will take a journey through time in this exciting BLAST FROM THE PAINTING PAST WebQuest. Students travel to various famous artists hometowns (websites) and learn about that painter’s life and unique painting style. Students will bring along a sketchbook to keep notes and to create their artist emulation paintings in. Students will play the role of; an explorer, an artist, researcher, and journalist on this WebQuest. Once students have completed their journey and artist sketchbook, they will choose two of the three final projects to complete.

This lesson is anchored in ninth grade visual arts and involves language arts and social studies to a lesser extent. This lesson could be expanded to accommodate older students or even the additional requirement of the third project at the end.

Before students begin this lesson they will need to know and understand how to get around on the internet. Students are required to visit outlined sites to require information and need this prior knowledge. Students should also know how to take effective notes that highlight the main points that are important to the story. Finally, students must know how to think critically to arrive at conclusions for the final projects.
