From administrative work to sprucing up the campus to music to liturgical planning to preparing for and cleaning up after the services to meals, parties, and coffee hours to Easter egg hunts, we just completed an all-hands- on deck exercise and I am grateful to the many people who made it all possible. Thank you! Generally, it was a wonderful week. We did have some occasional hiccups that disturbed the liturgical flow of services – the sound system is always a culprit in such things – and I send my sincerest apologies to those people whose Holy Week was diminished by those hiccups. Your liturgical leadership team has already gathered for a debriefing and initial planning for next year. We will make some improvements for Holy Week 2020. With the arrival of Easter, Lent Madness has concluded. In a surprise (for everyone except Meg), Martha of Bethany was this year’s Golden Halo winner, defeating Pandita Ramabai in the championship match- up. Meg Evans is the winner of the St. B’s bracket challenge, as she was the only person to pick Martha to win. The six folks who picked Ramabai to win the whole thing were less enthusiastic about the outcome. Meg, I owe you a St. Barnabas branded item of your choice and a Golden Halo mug – come talk to me. Stephanie Fong finished second, earning a Golden Halo mug. Thank you to everyone who participated and congratulations to Meg and Stephanie. The final standings can be found later in the newsletter. Melissa and I are marking our 30 th anniversary this month and we are celebrating with a cruise to the Baltic Sea. I will be away from St. Barnabas May 16 to June 4 (maybe the 5 th , depending on how the jet lag treats me). I will miss three Sundays, which doesn’t please me, but that is how the dates worked out. Fortunately, you will be well cared for by Deacon Bonnie and the rest of the staff. The Rev. Carol Hull will preside on the Sundays that I am way and provide pastoral care if necessary. We will miss you – most of the time…. Speaking of Bonnie, she is getting ordained!!! Her ordination has been scheduled for June 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Parish. As her service is just down the road from St. Barnabas, I hope that we will show up in mass to support her on this most special day. Much to my delight, Bonnie has accepted our invitation to preside at her first Eucharist at St. Barnabas on Sunday, June 23. I really hope that you will be present for that special day. I wish a blessed May to all, Sean

Challenge Gift

One of our parishioners, in thanksgiving for the positive transformation St. Barnabas has made over the last several years, and in honor of the great work Aubin is doing, has donated a $5,000 challenge gift to help secure Aubin's place on our staff. Our goal is to match that $5,000 gift with an additional $5,000 from the rest of the congregation. We have received pledges/contributions totaling $4,825 in support of Aubin's ministry at St. B's. If you would like to help us meet the challenge of the remaining $175.00, please put a check in the offering plate with "Challenge Fund" in the memo line. You can also contribute via your St. Barnabas Realm account by visiting the Giving tab and selecting the Challenge Fund. THANK YOU!

The Feast of St. Barnabas ~ a celebration of our 70th Anniversary!

This is the first of our 70th Anniversary events. Join us for this day of celebration, Saturday, June 15th at 2:00 p.m. for Holy Eucharist followed by a special coffee hour. The dress will be casual. We will be hosting members from St. James in Tigard and St. Bart’s in Beaverton. Come and see friends old and new! They are part of our history. In 1949 St. Barnabas was born as the Portland population expanded in the southwest farmland. In 1950 St. Barnabas was organized as a Mission. By the mid-1950’s St. Barnabas was overflowing with parishioners and two additional churches were born when our parishioners stretched out to live in new neighborhoods; St. Bartholomew’s in 1954 and St. James in 1958.

Contact Sandy Hunnicutt at 503 246-7952 or [email protected] to help or for more information.

Auction Items Needed for the St. Barnabas Gala November 10th

By Eva Calcagno

The St. Barnabas Gala Dinner will include a Silent Auction. The proceeds of the auction will support the St. Barnabas community and beyond, including Outreach, Parish Life, and the Challenge Fund. Cathie Price and I are heading up the “procurement” team for the auction, so please do not run when you see us! Since there is also a Holiday Bazaar coming, we are looking for auction items that aren’t “bazaar” items. This is a chance for you to think about what “gifts” you possess that would make an excellent auction item. Do you have a unique skill that you could share? For example, the Orendorffs have offered to host a class on making Gingerbread Houses. Do you cook? Could you host a dinner party at your house? It’s also OK to tag-team with a friend. Are you a good golfer or tennis player? Would you offer a lesson or two to a beginner? Can you babysit or mow lawns? Can you decorate cakes or make artwork? Think about offering your expertise or your handmade product as an auction item. If you are an attorney, CPA, financial planner, or other professional, would you offer a free consultation?

Well, some of us aren’t too talented, but we do have fun stuff to share! Do you have season tickets to sporting events (Ducks, Beavers, Blazers, Timbers, the Pickles) or cultural events (symphony, ballet, opera, plays or musical series) and would be willing to offer some tickets to be auctioned? What about vacation property? Care to offer a long weekend at your beach house or a week at your mountain cabin? As a teaser, I’ll hint that there will be at least a Hawaiian condo vacation available for bidding.

OK, if you don’t think you have a talent and you don’t have season Ducks tickets or a cabin at Mt. Hood, think about some easy options for contributing to the auction. Maybe you have some artwork, china or crystal at home that could use a new home – repurpose it for a good cause! Or, do you have a favorite hairdresser, massage therapist, pet groomer, or neighborhood business that would provide a gift certificate? Ask!

We will be soliciting auction items through the summer and need them in hand by the end of October. Cathie and I would be happy to talk over your ideas.

And, of course, the best auction item you can offer is yourself as a bidder! This will be a fun event, a time to celebrate how far we’ve come and to launch St. Barnabas forward for the next 70 years. Hope you will be there.

NOTES FROM THE WOMEN OF ST. BARNABAS

The Women of St. Barnabas met on Sunday April 28th with a total of 18 in attendance. We had many new faces and a great deal of exciting energy. We had a full slate of topics in front of us to look at and it was great to have so much input of ideas. Thank you all for attending.

Under old business we discussed the Agape Dinner. We had 27 in attendance which was down from the previous year. There had been a suggestion made to Fr. Sean to hold the dinner before the service next year. We talked about that option. It was agreed a quiet Maundy Thursday service before heading to dinner in Grafe Hall is best.

On Easter the potluck cookie coffee hour continued to be a great idea. The hall was full of parishioners celebrating the Blessed Easter Day. Thank you to Leslie and Keith for getting the coffee on. We continued with our tradition of the children’s Easter Egg Hunt in the church following the 10:00a.m. service. It was bountiful for all the kids. Thank you to Jackie Alexander for filling all the eggs.

We are continuing with our team approach for coffee hours. We are so happy to add Charlie and Amy McDannald as our 4th Sunday chairs. They are new to St. Barnabas and jumping in to help in many areas. There is still room on each of the support teams so if you feel a calling please sign up on the Women's bulletin board in Grafe Hall. Also, we are still encouraging individuals to sign up for coffee hour. You no longer need to do it on your own - there is a team to help. The captain will check in with you before the Sunday you are signed up for to see where you would like a helping hand.

Under new business a budget for the year was presented by the officers. Each line item was discussed, and any questions were answered as to where our dollars are going. It was passed as presented.

Cathie Price (who leads the Parish outreach) presented a new accounting form for any outreach activity. She explained the how's and why's of the importance of keeping track of our church's functions. This is something new to us, so we need to learn and move forward with better record keeping. She also helped create a form for a parish activity. This will help us to look at costs, hours of work donated, what does the activity/ministry hope to achieve, how do we measure progress and evaluate outcomes, what were the most important parts of the ministry, and what improvements can be made.

Our big fund raiser for the WoSB begins today with set up and hauling donations from our storage locker. Leslie Coefield is our "queen of rummage" and works so hard at this event. However, she does not do this alone. It takes a village and anyone with time to help would be greatly appreciated. The big set up begins Monday morning running through Thursday night. Our sale is Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4. We need lots of strong bodies later Saturday afternoon to pack up all the leftovers, please help if you can.

The Women will be doing the cooking Father's Day, June 16th. Lisa Begley will be leading this event. A sign up to help will be on the bulletin board shortly. Look and see where you can help.

Sunday, June 23rd will be Celebration Sunday, boy do we have a lot to celebrate. We will be honoring our graduates, having a baptism, and celebrating Bonnie's journey into priesthood. Wow! Please see Lisa Begley to see how you can help.

We continue to support Shepherd's Door - the women's facility run by Portland Rescue Mission. We have three chairs - Cathie Price, Eva Calcagno, and Lisa Begley. We develop a meal plan, shop,

Page 5: A Believe Outloud Parish /S B PDX HAPPY EASTER€¦ · sporting events (Ducks, Beavers, Blazers, Timbers, the Pickles) or cultural events (symphony, ballet, opera, plays or musical

cook, and serve anywhere from 25 - 40 women as well as 10-20 children. We are serving 6 times per year. We are now in the process of trying to add a craft project to share with the participants while we have the meal in the ovens. May 1st we will be doing small flower arrangements in celebration of May Day. Let us know if you have ideas for sharing. We have a sign up in Grafe Hall to help. We volunteer on Wednesdays leaving the church by 3:00 and are back by 7:00 pm.

We have Ronald McDonald House coming and speaking at our holiday tea this year. We just got a wish list from them. It was quite extensive so we will be checking in with them to help us narrow the suggestions of donations to a smaller list. We will share this with you as soon as it is finalized.

Eva Calcagno spoke of our upcoming 70th anniversary celebration as a church. We are having a gala dinner and auction on November 10th. She shared some donation ideas and gave us all a letter and form to help with donations. The Women, as a group, have taken on putting together one or two gardening gift baskets. This is going to be very exciting.

Good stuff for all of us at St. Barnabas!! Next Women of St. Barnabas meeting - June 2nd.

Coffee hour hosts are needed. Please see the sign-up sheet in Grafe Hall.

Christian Education/Youth Ministry

End of This Life Planning Workshop Have you ever wondered about the difference between an advance directive and a POLST? Which one do you have? Do you have both? Are you sure you know who it is who has your medical power of attorney? What readings and hymns do you prefer to hear during a funeral? And how does one really come to terms with dying, anyway? To find good and comforting answers to these hard and uncomfortable questions, you’ve been invited to a free and snack-filled workshop—here, at St. Barnabas, on Saturday, May 11th, 9am till noon in Grafe Hall. Many well-informed people will be giving presentations, sharing materials, and answering questions. Everyone and anyone could benefit from all the information that will be made available. The event will end with a guided customization of funerals. Yes, that might sound macabre, but it’s going to be fun! RSVPing is appreciated; please contact Fr. Sean.

Bible Study Any given Sunday, you’re welcome to join the Bible Study at 9am. We most often meet in Grafe Hall. Though we had previously toiled through the entire Bible, we’re now taking it easy: one chapter of Genesis a week. As I write this, Adam and Eve haven’t even eaten of the fruit of the tree of knowledge yet. Handouts with can be found in the narthex.

Youth Group On Wednesday, May 8th, at 6:30pm in Grafe Hall, Youth Group for kids 12 and up will meet. I hope that every kid can make it! There'll be pizza, games, reading, discussion, and then we’ll close with evening prayer by 8:15pm.

Movie Night RaSMaTaS (Reverent and Serious Movies about Theology and Suffering, pronounced “razzmatazz”) continues every third Wednesday! On Wednesday, May 15th, at 6:30pm in Grafe Hall, you are invited to watch Menashe (2017). This recent movie takes place in a modern day, ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, New York. Menashe, our protagonist, is played by Menashe, a man who has never acted in a film before. He has never even seen a film before. He is a widower who has, according to Torah, lost custody of his son. This is his story. As always, there will be popcorn and refreshments.

Portland Rescue Mission On Friday, May 24th, volunteers from St. Barnabas will feed hundreds at Portland Rescue Mission’s downtown location (111 W. Burnside). Please let me know if you’re interested. If you can’t make it this month, note that we’re set now to volunteer at Portland Rescue Mission every fourth Friday of the month. Dinner is served at 6pm, so we try to arrive well before that.

Graduation Sunday It’s not too early to note that our Graduation Sunday will take place on June 23rd. Please let all the grads in your life know—and please let me or Fr. Sean know who will be attending!

Summer VBS Many have asked, so let it be known: Our Summer VBS (July 29-August 1, 9am till noon) will be Harry Potter-themed! For registration forms, please see me. Thank you very much to those who have volunteered to help with the program!

Keeping up with Fletcher Calcagno…

Here is a link to an article about Fletcher’s Debate team at George Washington University. They are ranked 3rd in the nation! Fletcher is ranked 20th in the nation in the Novice Category (Freshmen). The article is a good explanation of how the college level parliamentary debate works and there’s a great photo of the team. Eva

Q: Why do the Passover dates not mesh with Easter (since Jesus did Passover Seder with his disciple’s right before being betrayed)

A: Great question! One that is both simple and complicated at the same time. Rather than recreate the wheel, here is a helpful explanation from the Internet. http://www.rayfowler.org/writings/articles/determining-the-dates-for-easter-and-passover/

Determining the date for Passover:

The Jewish calendar year begins in late September or early October with the celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Unlike our calendar which is based on the solar year, the Jewish calendar uses twelve lunar months of 29 to 30 days in length. The new moon marks the beginning of each month with the full moon occurring halfway through the month. The seventh month in a normal Jewish calendar year is the month of Nisan (also called Abib in the Old Testament). Passover is celebrated on the 14th day of Nisan at the time of the full moon.

Page 9: A Believe Outloud Parish /S B PDX HAPPY EASTER€¦ · sporting events (Ducks, Beavers, Blazers, Timbers, the Pickles) or cultural events (symphony, ballet, opera, plays or musical

Determining the date for Easter (*Western Church):

Easter is observed on the first Sunday following the full moon that comes on or after the vernal equinox (March 21). Thus, Easter can take place as early as March 22 but no later than April 25. This full moon is normally the full moon which takes place on the 14th day of Nisan. Thus, in most years Easter is celebrated on the Sunday following Passover.

Why don’t Easter and Passover always fall together on the calendar?

Every two or three years the Jewish calendar requires the adjustment of a leap year. During a Jewish leap year an additional month of 29 days is inserted before the month of Nisan. The additional month is needed because the Jewish calendar year has fewer days than the solar year and begins to slip out of gear with the seasons. The extra month thus realigns the Jewish calendar year with the seasons of the solar year. This is important because the Jewish holidays are closely related to the seasons. For example, the Torah commands that Passover be celebrated in the spring.

Every so often the Jewish leap year will push Passover so far into April that a second full moon following the vernal equinox would appear before the Sunday following Passover. This happens anytime the Sunday following Passover falls later than April 25th on our calendar. On those rare occasions Easter is celebrated the month before Passover rather than the Sunday following Passover.
