A Bar Harbor InstitutionThe Abbe Museum shares the history and culture of Maine’s Native people, collectively known as the Wa-banaki (Abenaki, Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, and Maliseet), and operates from two locations in Bar Harbor. At our downtown location, visitors find dynamic exhibitions and activities interspersed with spaces for quiet reflection.

At the Abbe’s historic trailside museum at Sieur de Monts Spring, guests can experience early 20th century ar-chaeological discoveries informed by 21st century sci-

ence. The downtown Abbe Museum serves guests year-round, while the Sieur de Monts Spring location is open seasonally from mid-May to mid-October.

First opened to the public in 1928, the Abbe Museum is named for its founder, Dr. Robert Abbe (1851-1928), an eminent New York physician and beloved summer resident of Bar Harbor. During the 1920s, Dr. Abbe as-sembled a collection of early Native American artifacts found in the Frenchman Bay area which launched the museum at Sieur de Monts Spring. In 2001, we opened our second facility in a renovated historic landmark in downtown Bar Harbor.

EducationThrough our public and classroom-based programs, exhibits, and public interaction, over 23,000 people were invited to learn more about Native culture, think about differences and similarities, and consider our social responsibility. This is a 7% attendance increase from 2009.

ResearchCollege students and life-long learners were able to get their hands dirty and scientifically reveal new evidence during our annual archaeological field school. Abbe staff journeyed throughout Maine interviewing tribal leaders and members about their pressing socio-political concerns.

CareRecognizing that our buildings house vulnerable artifacts while creating a comfortable environment for our guests, managing our climate control and energy usage became a primary concern. Improvement efforts were kick-started with a National Endowment for the Humanities planning grant award.

InvestmentRepresenting over 80 Native artists in the museum shop and hiring dozens of Native educators each year, the Abbe sends signifi-cant funds back into tribal communities throughout Maine and beyond. Sound fiscal management resulted in a trim operating budget and a small surplus for the first time in recent history.

RESEARCHNew UnderstandingFor one week in August, a dozen archaeology enthusiasts joined Abbe staff and volunteers at the Tranquility Farm Site in Gouldsboro, ME. Participants included college students, teachers, a park ranger, and long-time Abbe friends. They excavated a site first explored by the Abbe Museum in the 1930s, followed by more scientific research in the 1990s. This shell midden has revealed what plants and animals people were eating 2000 years ago, what tools they used to subsist, and how they decorated their pottery. Abbe staff had the opportunity to spend time on each of the five tribal communities; two visits to the Micmac and Maliseet herald a renewed commitment from the Museum to better represent all Wabanaki communities in Maine. Buying trips introduced us to new artists, and interviews conducted for Headline News fostered better under-standing of tribal initiatives and leadership. Visiting and listening to Native people in the communities where they live is vital to understanding the contemporary and historic story.

New Approaches to the Permanent Collection Over the past year, objects from the Abbe’s collection traveled to the University of Southern Maine, the Acadian Archives at University of Maine, Fort Kent, and the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle. These pieces were exhibited in new contexts that broaden the impact of our collections. Exhibits focusing on contemporary art, fine crafts, and the relationships between Micmac and Acadian people in northern Maine offer new interpretations of our collections for new audiences.

As part of a new initiative at the Abbe, staff worked with Penobscot Nation tribal historian James E. Francis, Sr. to create an exhibit featuring Penobscot performer, educator and activist Lucy Nicolar, known to her family as Aunt Lu. Francis, who is a member for Nicolar’s extended family, guest curated this Community Gallery exhibit, choosing images and objects, writing the text and designing the graphics. Aunt Lu: The Story of Princess Watahwaso follows a similar collaboration with Maliseet author Mikhu Paul for her exhibit Look Twice: The Waponahki in Image and Verse.

The Museum CommunityAbbe staff traveled the U.S., presenting at national museum meetings and contributing to the field of museum studies. Julia at the American Association of Museums annual meeting, Julia led a panel discussion on moving collec-tions into new storage and at the American Association for State and Local History annual meeting, Raney led a panel discussion about addressing contemporary Native topics in a museum setting. Cinnamon continues to serve on the AASLH Council and on national advisory committees.

With the mission to inspire new learning about the Wabanaki Nations with every visit, the Abbe Museum values the importance of education, research, care, and investment in our strategic and operational work.

EDUCATIONNew Initiatives Fuel the FutureHeadline News: Wabanaki Sovereignty in the 21st Century was a ground breaking exhibit that focused on eight topics. The exhibit explored the unique relationship between the tribal Nations in Maine and the state. Told through first person voice, it broke through stereotypes about what it means to be Native American, and helped better define sovereignty. It forged new relationships between the Museum and Wabanaki communities, and provided a venue for the tribes to speak directly to the public about issues important to them.

Two new collaborative programs were launched in 2010, working with partners from the Penobscot Nation, the Dorr Museum, and the Whale Museum. Adaptation is explored through a partnership with the Dorr and Whale Museums, each looking at the topic through our own mission, to give students a more thorough understanding of the theme. Deconstructing Stereotypes is a skit and word play, written in partnership with Penobscot Nation Cultural and Historic Preservation Department, to help students better under-stand the nature and source of stereotypes and their harmful impact.

With the help and guidance of the Education Advisory Committee, we launched an evaluation of all school programs. With the goal to revise our programs to better meet changing state assessment requirements, we are also directly interested in meeting teacher needs and student interests. This muli-year project will have several outcomes including new Teacher Guides with pre and post-visit classroom activities and examples of student work. At the end of the process, the revised programs will be launched in advance of Maine’s adoption of national common core assessments.

CARESecuring ResourcesIn May 2010, the Abbe participated in the Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) from Heritage Preservation and the Institute for Museum & Library Services. CAP funds supported an on-site objects conservator and historic buildings specialist as they conducted an overall assessment of how we care for our collections and historic buildings. Revisiting a similar assessment completed before the move downtown, it has given us a good sense of what we can do in the future to continue to improve our stewardship of the building and collections.

In June 2010 the Abbe was awarded a competitive grant for $40,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to review our climate control system and determine if the system could be modified to meet preser-vation standards while implementing economically and environmentally sustainable approaches to the building environment. The need for this re-evaluation was recog-nized due to the high cost of operating our current system, the unreliability of various parts of the system, and ongoing problems meeting current museum standards for temper-ature and humidity.

Friendly Service and Comfortable LearningAs we hired our seasonal staff, we took the opportunity to revise our customer service commitments. Referring to our visitors now as guests, our front-line staff is trained in Wabanaki and museum studies content and is expected to be service-oriented. We produced a series of programming around Headlines News that highlighted contemporary issues; sometimes, controversial. As with all of our program designs, the Abbe is a safe place for learning and ideas and this model was strengthened with the introduction of new subject matter.

INVESTMENTInvesting in Indian CountryIn the Abbe Shop we have the unique opportunity to buy directly from over 80 Native artists and manufacturers and share the products with a global audience. This year we traveled to Wabanaki communities on “buying trips” and identified several new artists and suppliers. We employed 17 Native program leaders who taught and demonstrated basketmaking, jewelry, chip carving, birch bark etching, canoe making; and, performers who were vocalists, flutists, drummers, and storytellers. Staff DevelopmentTraining and nurturing staff members to be the best employees possible is the desired model of management, resulting in high performance and retention. This year we concentrated on team building training, researching national trends, and attending annual meeting sessions that enhanced skills.

PlanningIn this first year of a five-year strategic plan, we achieved our goals and approved an attendant financial plan for long-term financial sustainability. Goals realized include an education plan, a five-year exhibit plan, and a staff team re-organization. We elected to change our fiscal year in 2011 to a 9/30 year-end to better manage seasonal variability. As the year drew to a close, we received several major gifts and income and expense tracked as predicted, resulting in a small surplus and a balanced budget plan for 2011.

With the mission to inspire new learning about the Wabanaki Nations with every visit, the Abbe Museum values the importance of education, research, care, and investment in our strategic and operational work.

Message from the CEO

Bringing our new strategic plan to life and reigning in expenses during the tail end of a recession dominated our work in 2010. It is clear from our financial statements that we were successful with the latter and I’m happy to share that our goals for 2010 were realized. The Abbe is blessed with incredibly talented staff members and we work with an amazing group of tribal leaders, culture keepers, artists and citizens who make our mission relevant and transformative. As we closed 2010, we excitedly looked toward 2011, our 10th year with a downtown Bar Harbor presence, and it’s clear we are fulfilling our potential everyday. Thank you to our trustees, volunteers, and donors – your generosity is inspiring and makes it all possible.

At year end, it was clear that dramatically reducing expenses in 2009 and 2010 improved spending patterns and positioned us for a balanced 2011 budget. Several major gifts combined with strategic fund raising all year long resulted in a small surplus for 2010, a trend we are focused on for the future.
