    COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

    T-SHIRT, ATHLETE’S PHYSICAL FITNESS UNIFORM (PFU)

    The General Services Administration has authorized the use ofthis Commercial Item Description in preference to MIL-T-44214.

    Classification. The T-shirt shall be of one type.

    Description. The T-shirt shall have short-sleeves, a crew neckcollarette, and hemmed bottom and sleeves (see figure 1).The T-shirt shall have the word ARN_f in 3 inch (~ 1/4 inch) inheight by 5/8 inch (~ 1/16 inch) in thickness letters (se@ fi9ure2) screen printed on the front (see Table IV). The overall widthof the letters shall be 12 inches (< 1/4 inch). The color of thebody and collarette shall be heather gray 467. The collaretteshall be made of a double thickness of ribbed cloth and shallfinish 1 inch (~ 1/8 inch) wide. The sleeves and T-shirt bottomshall have a hem of 1 inch (~ 1/4 inch) wide. All seams shall broveredge stitched and the gage of the stitching shall be3/16 (~ 1/16 inch). The letters shall be black thermal plasticbase ink withstanding temperatures to 300° F.

    Basic material, The cloth for the body of the T-shirt shall be a ojersey knit using a cottonfpolyester blend yarn conforming to therequirements specified in Table I. The cloth for the collaretteof the T-shirt shall be a 1 X 1 rib knit using a cotton/polyesterblend yarn conforming to the requirements specified in Table II.

    The cl~th for the bo~v and coll~rette shall-be Preshrunk by amechanical process prior to cutting the garment:. The pre:shrinking process used shall not be identified by name ortrademark on the finished garment or package.

    NOTE : The use of dyes or compounds containing “elementary sulfurcapable of oxidation to sulfuric acid is prohibited. The dyesshall be chosen and applied so that the dyed and finished clothshall contain no more labile sulfur than shown by the standardsample when tested in accordance with end item performancetesting.

    Thread The thread for the T-shirts shall be approximately a— .50/2 (approx. 40 Tex), with minimum breaking strength of2.7 pounds and maximum elongation of 35 percent constructed of acotton, or a spun polyester, or a polyester-covered staplepolyester core, or a high tenacity, textured polyester. Thethread color shall be light grey to match the basic material for

    the T-shirt. The thread shall show colorfastness to laundering,perspiration, and light, equal to or better than a rating of“good”.

    2W2SZ. The reinforcement tape for the shoulder shall be plainweave, unbleached cotton, 3/16 (~1/32 inch) wide, with a minimumwarp breaking strength of 22 pounds. As an alternate, a 2 by 2flat braid, natural white spun polyester tape, 1/8(+1/16, - 0 inch) wide, with a minimum warpbreaking strength of30 pounds may be used. The starch and protein content, includingchloroform-soluble and water-soluble material. shall not exceed4.0 percent. The tape shall not shrink more ~han 4.0 percent inthe warp direction.

    Label A commercial type label is acceptable, provided that an.additional printed cloth label containing the contractor’s name,contract number, size and National Stock Number (NSN) is caughton the stitching of the commercial label. The commercial labelshall include fiber content and laundering information.

    Sizes and Measurements. The finished T-shirt shall conform tothe measurements in Table III. See Figure 1.

    Markinq. The black “ARMY” marking shall be screen printed on thefront of the t-shirt as shown in Fiaure 1, and shall be Dlacedaccording to Table IV. The printin~ shali show colorfas~ness tolaundering when tested as specified in AATCC 61-1986, 1A testmethod, except the specimens shall be dried in an automatictumble dryer at normal cycle. The test shall be performed aminimum o~ three times t~ imitate approximately 15 launderings.

    Workmanship. The finished T-shirt shall be clean, and all loosethread, lint, and foreign matter removed. The items shall beuniform in quality and shall be free from irregularities ordefects which adversely affect appearance, performance,reliability, or durability.

    Product Demonstration Model. When required, offerers shallsubmit a T-shirt of their intended production. The ProductDemonstration Model shall consist of units independentlydeveloped. Product Demonstration Model shall be analvzed andevaluated-by the government. Evaluation criteriaaward are contained in the solicitation. ProductModels shall be retained by the government.

    Certification. The contractor shall certify thatoffered meets the salient characteristics of thisthat the product conforms to the producer’s own drawings,specifications, standards and quality assurance practices. Thegovernment reserves the right to require proof of suchconformance prior to the first delivery and thereafter as may beotherwise provided for, under the provisions of the contract.

    Examination . Lots of T-shirts shall be inspected in accordancewith “Sampling Procedures and Tables for Inspection byAttributes”, AWSI/ASQC 21.4, published by the American Societyfor Quality Control.

    Visual Examination. The inspection level for visual examinationshall be II and the AQL, expressed in terms of defects perhundred units, shall be 1.5 for major defects and 4.0 for totaldefects. The sample unit is one T-shirt.

    Dimensional Examination. The finished T-shirt shall conform tothe dimensions specified. Any dimension that is not within theestablished tolerance shall be classified as a defect. Thesample unit shall be one T-shirt; the inspection level shall beS-3 and the AQL shall be 4.0.

    End Item Performance Testinq. The end item shall be tested forshrinkage as specified in Test Method 150-1987 of AATCC usingnormal machine cycle, (120° ~ 5° F ) washing temperature andcotton/sturdy dryer setting (150° ~ 10° F). The T-shirt shallnot be moistened or pressed before measuring. The completedT-shirt shall not shrink nor elongate more than 10 percent inwidth or length when tested. The measurements shall be taken tothe nearest 0.1 inch with the T-shirt laid flat. Any dimensionnot within the specified tolerance shall be classified as adefect. The lot size shall be expressed in units of T-shirts.The sample unit shall be one T-shirt. The acceptable qualitylevel (AQL), expressed in terms of defects per one hundred units,shall not exceed a total of four defects, or one and a half majordefects.

    Inspection of packaqinq. The sampling and inspection for thepreservation, packing, marking and palletization requirementsshall be in accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1, Table II,Preservation Inspection Provisions for Method/Submethods ofMIL-P-116. The applicable defect descriptions of this Table IIshall be extended to include any intermediate and shippingcontainers and the unitized load. Also included shall be a countof the specified container quantity and identification ofspecified contents, e.g. All items within any one carton shallbe limited to one type, class and size.

    Packaqinq, Packina, Markinq and Palletization.

    Preservation. Each T-shirt shall be neatly folded and placed ina commercially acceptable polyethylene bag.

    Packinq. Ninety-six T-shirts shall be packed in a fiberboard boxconforming to style RSC-L, grade 275 of PPP-B-636. The insidedimensions of the box shall be approximately 24-1/2 inches inlength, 16-1/2 inches in width aid 12 inches in depth for X-Smallto Small and 24-1/2 inches in lenath. 16-1/2 inches in width and19-1/2 inches in depth for sizes fied~um to XX-Large. The box

    shall be closed in accordance with the appendix of PPP-B-636.

    Palletization. When specified, packed T-shirts shall bepalletized on a 4-way entry pallet in accordance with load typela of MIL-STD-147. Each prepared load shall be bonded withprimary and secondary straps in accordance with bonding meansC and D or film bonding means F or G, Pallet pattern shall benumber 3 in accordance with the appendix of MIL-STD-147.

    Markinq. All markings, including bar codes, on the unit pack,shipping containers and palletized loads shall be in accordancewith MIL-STD-129,
