The summer of 2012 has been a busy one for the Freeland Community School District. There have been many changes that you will notice in the fall that will make a big difference for our students. As usual, many of these have been completed due to the 1.0 mill Sinking Fund that the voters of Freeland have continually supported. This is the same Sinking Fund that supported the four (4) classroom addition to the Learning Center, the new playground equipment at our K-6 grade buildings, new boilers at the Learning Center, and countless other carpet, roof, and other maintenance projects throughout the District. This year is no different. Our kindergarten through second grade students will definitely feel the results of the new heating system installed at the Learning Center. This was, by far, our largest project in our oldest building, and one that will keep our students much more comfortable in the classroom. Other projects that occurred this summer include: • The addition of a storage shed for our drama department. • Renovation of the athletic complex concession stand • Construction of a storage building/shelter area at the athletic complex • Installation of wireless internet at the Learning Center, to make our entire district wireless • Installation of new bleachers at Freeland High School • Installation of carpeting in classrooms at FHS and the Learning Center Additionally, through the very generous donation of Ron and Michele Schauman, the wonderful support of an anonymous lender, and the commitment of the Freeland Athletic Association, Falcon Stadium will have a new, synthetic turf field installed in time for the fall sports season. This field will be a true jewel for the community, a wonderful asset for the school district, and a great surface for our athletes to compete on. We hope you enjoy the photos on this page that show many of the projects we have completed. It has truly been a great summer for Freeland, and we look forward to the reaping the rewards for all of this hard work in the fall. A Busy Summer

LC Principal ThoughtsBy Bev Beyer, Freeland Learning Center Prinicpal

Welcome Back to a New School YearWelcome to the Freeland Learning Center School Family. I would like to extend a warm

welcome to a new school year. The staff and I are looking forward to working with you and your children this year. We will strive to continue to provide an exciting and rewarding educational program for each and every child at the Learning Center. We have had improve-ments made to our school over the summer such as: new classroom univents, so we will be nice and warm this winter; wireless computer connections; six new digital projectors with interactive capacity; six new iPads; computers updated as scheduled; and carpet replacement in two rooms.

I’d like to take this opportunity to acquaint you with some routine schedules and proce-dures:

• It is essential to keep your child’s emergency card updated at all times. When you change jobs, residence, or phone numbers please call the offi ce (695-5721) or send a note. You can also update some information through your SchoolView account by clicking on the drop down arrow next to your name, choose My Info, and click on the red button – Change Request Form.• You will receive the 2012-2013 Parent/Student Handbook the fi rst week of school. We give one per family and it is sent home with the youngest student in the family. This handbook is a good reference when you have a question about school policies and procedures.• Cathy Eschenbacher in the Transportation Department is a wonderful help with your questions about busing. Her number is 695-5101.• Learning Center Offi ce staff: Lisa Rabie, Secretary Cindy Farah, Part-time secretary Bev Beyer, Principal

• If further information is needed, please feel welcome to call our offi ce.

IPODIPOD will once again be offered at the middle school to assist students with homework completion and provide tutoring. This year, IPOD will run in the morning before school starts from 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. and again at lunch. IPOD will begin the second week of school on Monday, September 10. Students may volunteer to attend or maybe required to do so in order to turn in a late assignment. For further information on IPOD please contact the middle school offi ce.Mrs. Nicole Gotts; Health/PE Teacher and Allison Shea; 7th grade student.

Olympics take over FMSAs the Olympics have taken over our television screens

through the summer, they also took over FMS in the spring. Working hard for a gold medal in understanding the metric

system, the 7th grade students worked diligently through the unit to be well rewarded. Events held at the FMS an-

nual Metric Olympics included the Ski Pole Throw, Snow-ball Shot Put, Hockey Puck Discus, and the Ice Cube Grab.

Teaching Positive BehaviorOnce again, SOAR (Safe, Open-Minded, Accepting, and Respectful) will be used at FMS. Not only will this pro-gram be the center of the anti-bullying program, but it will also be used to teach appropriate behavior to the students. Throughout the year, students will attend homeroom activities focused on each of the four words stated above. Students will also be rewarded for practicing positive behaviors weekly by earning SOAR tickets.Last year, our end of the year winners for excellent SOAR behavior included Kelsey Klimkewicz (7), Allison Shea (7), David Lazarz (7), and Jacob Hoffman (8).

Learning Beyond the ClassroomThis school year at FMS, students can look forward to a number

of exciting learning activities to take place outside of theclassroom. Examples may include a 7th grade trip to a

Holocaust Museum, an 8th grade trip to Greenfi eld Village, or Great Lakes Bay Region Career Fair, and the FMS Travel Club

will be going to Washington D.C. over Spring Break!

Judges Choice AwardCongratulations to Kimberly Sampson for winning the 2012 Judges Choice Award at the Freeland Fine Arts Festival. Her painting will be on display in the front offi ce of the high school for the next school year.

Stopping BullyingLearning Center students SOAR through school! SAFEOpen-minded AcceptingRespectful SOAR is an acronym for the Freeland Community School District’s anti-bullying initia-tive. We work hard, as a district, to promote a safe, open-minded, accepting, and respectful school culture and environment. At the Learning Center, all classrooms have a “Classroom Discipline Plan” that offers both positive rewards as well as consequences. Our school also has a Behavioral Rubric that will be distributed to families at Open House this fall.

Principal ThoughtsBy Rebekah Hornak, Freeland Middle SchoolPrincipal

I would like to take this moment to welcome you back to Freeland Community School District for another exciting year ahead. This year the middle school staff is geared up and ready to provide an amazing educational experience for your student. Our motto for the year is “Teach, Learn, Grow.” Our teachers are driven and focused on teaching your students with the best instructional practices and strategies. We will monitor your student’s learning to guarantee progress throughout the year, and at the end you will fi nd that we have grown as a school and community.

Please take a moment to view our school website, as there have been some changes. There is now a calendar listing all of the events occurring at the

middle school, along with a weekly planner that will be updated every Monday with classroom topics and homework. In addition, my weekly update will provide you with an inside look into the weekly activities that occur at the middle school. Finally, if you have not already done so, I encourage you to sign-up for our e-mail list. You will receive daily announcements, updates, and planners directly to your inbox. Simply go to our website, www.freeland.k12.mi.us, click on the District tab, District Information, and click on E-Mail lists. You can choose from seven (7) different list-serves.

While I hope all of you have had a wonderful summer, we at FMS are ready to start the new school year. Feel free at any time to contact me if you

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams.

Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strat-egy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Previously, the pro-

gram had been limited to high school students and Michigan had never even had a tournament. That all changed when the Freeland team participated in a new pilot

program to bring FTC to Michigan middle schools. The team received a grant from FIRST to get started. They also received funding from Nexteer Automotive, Rally’s, and Freeland Schools. Team members who participated in the event were Emma Snider, Nick Kopec, Ben Balen, Leona Childs, Christian Haraga, Marshall Snider, Eric Tyson, Alec Pilon, and AJ Rezmer (of Auburn). Currently, the FTC

program is looking for volunteer coaches and new team members for the2012-13 school year. If interested please contact the FMS offi ce.

Robotics CampThe Freeland Robotics club offered the fi rst-ever First LEGO League

(FLL) summer camp in Freeland this past August. Nine (9) students were immersed in real-world science and technology challenges, as teams de-

signed their own solution to a current scientifi c question/problem and built LEGO robots that performed a series of missions. Through their participa-tion, children developed valuable life skills and discovered exciting career

possibilities while learning that they can make a positive contribution to society. The goals of the FLL are to: inspire children to participate in science and technology; provide a fun and hands-on learning experience; encourage children to think like scientists and engineers; connect teams to their community, build self-esteem and confi dence. This was a great

experience for those who were able to participate.

Principal ThoughtsBy Tim Parson, Freeland Elementary School Principal

Welcome to the 2012 – 2013 school year. It has been a rather uneventful summer at the elementary school. We are fortunate to have such a fi ne elementary facility, and that has allowed the maintenance staff to focus their efforts on detailing the building for the upcoming school year.

There has been some technology upgrades to the primary technology lab and classrooms that will help to improve instruction. The tech lab has been outfi tted with all new refurbished computers and monitors. A program called Insight 360, has been installed in all of the classrooms. Each teacher will have access to an iPad that will give them Interactive Whiteboard capabilities to enhance instruction.

When you visit the elementary offi ce, you will notice the absence of a familiar face. After more than 25 years of greeting visitors, taking temperatures, attending to bumps and bruises, providing a comforting hand, attending to teacher needs, as well as the principal, along with many other offi ce responsibilities, Mrs. Kelly retired in June. She will be missed by all! Please welcome Mrs. Groll, who comes to us from the Learning Center. I am confi dent that she will complement the already competent Mrs. Kucher. All three of us are here to serve our customers, students and teachers. We are looking forward to another productive school year. If I can be of any assistance, please call the elementary school at 695-5371.

Freeland Welcomes...

District Mission StatementThe purpose of the Freeland Community School District is preparing students to be successful adults through excellence in education.

Our kindergarten through second grade students will defi nitely feel the results of the new heating system installed at the Learning Center. This was, by far, our largest project in our oldest building, and one that will keep our students much more comfortable in the classroom. Other projects that occurred this summer include: • The addition of a storage shed for our drama department. • Renovation of the athletic complex concession stand • Construction of a storage building/shelter area at the athletic complex • Installation of wireless internet at the Learning Center, to make our entire district wireless • Installation of new bleachers at Freeland High School • Installation of carpeting in classrooms at FHS and the Learning Center Additionally, through the very generous donation of Ron and Michele Schauman, the wonderful support of an anonymous lender, and the commitment of the Freeland Athletic Association, Falcon Stadium will have a new, synthetic turf fi eld installed in time for the fall sports season. This fi eld will be a true jewel for the community, a wonderful asset for the school district, and a great surface for our athletes to compete on. We hope you enjoy the photos on this page that show many of the projects we have completed. It has truly been a great summer for Freeland, and we look forward to the reaping the rewards for all of this hard work in the fall.
