Ixhe following legend was told to me by Miss Helen Jones, (Now Mrs Wilbur Pontius, (Jir cleville, uhio K#l) in 1933. Helen Jones is the granddaughter of Silas Jones, great grand daughter of Henry Jones, and- great-great-grand-daughter of PjS'fER JONliid, Jh.)
“One day Peter Jones, Jr. took his son Henry to see the public whipping of a Blave. As the slave-owner viciously lashed his slave, terrible gashes were cut in the slave's body by the whip from which the blood gushed in streams.
This brutality was too much for Peter Jones* Jr., so he said to his son Henry, with an oath:
•Dome, Henry, you and i are going where things like this do not happen .••
jo they went home, loaded their belongings in an ox-cart and moved to Uhio.

All of the Peter Jones, Jr., and descendants of the John Jones line who went to uhio, settled in the Virginia Military .District of that state, and most of the members of the John Jones line, l understand, received their land for military semises. hut U3 l did not iind that Peter Jones, Jr ever owned land in Ohio, -L thought to record the above 3tory as a possible reason why he went, as well as because many of his relatives were going, lienry Jones, his son, received land in Vinton Co., for services in war of 1812.

Mrs Eva Wagoner, 100 b. btate bt., Uolumbus, uhio, who said in one of her le tters: 11 Aunt Aaty died in 1909, having buried all her eight children before she de¬ parted. Most of her children died in infancy. ‘'Aunt ilaty's second child, a daughter barah, was a very bright girl, and ogly 15 years of age when she had a certifi¬ cate to teach, and l believe was teaching at her death11.

The only names of those children 1 have gotten to date is thru a letter written by Martha m. O'neal (one of them; on June 25, 1862, to her grandmother, nancy (Moss)Jones, in which she mentions a little brother a few months old, named: William bimeon. in this letter, she says: ••Tell grandfather that mother told me about him going to war with his father.11 which i suppose means the War oi 1812, and which is the only information that we have so far that both henry Jones and his father, Peter Jones, Jr., were in the ^ar of 1812.

It is reported that Silas Jones knew the Jones history for four generations back, but he died in 1923, ten years before l got interested in the Jones genealogy, and he left only a brief record of his own line of the Jones family, with but little back of it.

I have several Copies of civil War letters by him while he was in service, the most interesting of which is one telling of the death of a friend, Allen Yaple, and his buriul just outside the battleground of oettysburg. \ Miss Elizabeth Jones, of the John Jone3 line, finds in the records of Hampshire Co., West Virginia, that on August 18, 1801, the children of John Jones {her earliest known ancestor^conveyed land received by the tfill of John Jones, which included lots in the town of prankfort "being also part of the real estate of Sarah Jones, deceased", in other words, John Jones, their father, received property from oarah Jones lwho might have been his mother)--and if she was John JoneS mother, she evidently was also the mother of Peter Jones, dr. I the descendants of these two lines in Ohio calling themselves cousins).
Martin n. nanck, 1581 Arlington Ave., East, Columbus, Ohio, claimac that he heard henry Jones, his grand¬ father, say that Peter Jones, Jr. was a Methodist minister in Virginia.
But Kobert dpencer Jones, son of Henry, told me in 1935, that his grandfather, Peter Jones, Jr., was not a minister, but a private school teacher in Virginia.

Peter Jones was a minister, I am inclined to think that Peter Jones, Jr., could have been both at dif¬ ferent times in his life.
Martin n. Kanck told me also that Peter Jones, Jr. was known as a very fine swimmer; and that one day when he was in Virginia (possibly visiting relatives, as the date was after his removal to Ohio) he saw a woman drowning in a stream, and that he jumped in to save her; but she pulled him under the water and they were both drowned*
It is pretty generally recorded in all the nibles of the nenry jonea children and grandchildren, that Peter Jones, jr,, and his family moved to Ohio in 1308. And this date conflicts very much, because Peter Jones of the Jolm Jones line went to Ohio the same year, and l find that many of our line are trying to confuse our Peter Jones, Jr., with Peter Jones of the John Jones line.
l am giving a short sketch of the John Jones line on the next several pages, which history wa3 given to me by Miss Jessie Woods, Kingston, Ohio, who is a descendant of the Peter Jones line of John.
