Recording Professional Vertical Video

A guide to vertical &

square video from

PTZOptics

...yea, 9:16 & 1:1

It’s a mobile world! The facts about Vertical Video are REAL!

• Smartphone users hold their phones vertically about

94 percent of the time. (Source: MOVR Mobile

Overview Report)

Vertical Video is recorded in 9:16

Square video is recorded in 1:1.

So Vertical video is different from

square and potentially more ideal

for mobile users.

Both square and vertical video

are being recommended for

mobile video advertising.

Let’s watch a vertical video recorded with multiple

cameras

Remember to rotate your mobile device to view this video in it’s native format.

Vertical Video

Resolutions

Vertical video resolutions

come in quite a few 16:9

resolutions such as

1280x720 or 1920x1080

except they are been

reversed via 9:16 into

720x1280 and 1080x1920

Recording Video in 9:16

Most vertical video is recorded with

mobile devices. Smartphones have

changed the world and now mobile

users are consuming more vertical

video than ever before.

If we want to make a polished vertical

video commercial we will need to use

an editing software like Adobe After

Effects.

Upload Test Facebook...

So our upload tests for both

YouTube and Facebook have been

interesting. Facebook I knew would

have amazing support for vertical

video. As you can see, even on

desktop (this picture is a snippet of

my desktop) Facebook makes it

work!

Upload Test YouTube...

On the traditional desktop

vertical video still looks a slice

of the available real estate. I

was hoping to see a changed

interface. But they have

designed the system to scale

when needed so you will see

on the next page a full screen

takeover on mobile via

YouTube.

Upload Test YouTube...

So YouTube scales the content to

be used with mobile devices. This

is a great start. Facebook makes

the experience smoother on the

desktop and both companies do

well on mobile. Also, YouTube does

help the thumbnails with a simple

background fade here. Vertical Video on

Embedding Vertical Video

The way YouTube has designed

their scaling video play if you put in

embed sizes that match 9:16 the

video will play vertically on your

website embedded.

Facebook is honestly a pain when it

comes to embedding videos.

Usually it can be very hard to figure

out how it works.

Setting up OBS for Vertical Video Recording

I’m happy to report

the free live

streaming and video

production software

OBS (Open

Broadcaster

Software) supports

Vertical Recording

and Square

Streaming!

Enter Professional Vertical Video

So again just to recap you can upload to Facebook and

YouTube with vertical video.

YouTube just announced vertical video support video for

on-demand but as you can see as of October 2017

YouTube does not offer vertical streaming via RTMP.

Apparently the only way live stream vertical content would

be from a smartphone device directly to Facebook or

YouTube. You can of course incorporate vertical content

into your 16:9 live streams which could be an interesting

effect :)

9:16 Video Production Workflow

System 1 - Regular 16:9 Video Broadcast

System 2 - 9:16 Vertical Video Recording

Incorporating 9:16 Video into a 16:9 Production

While we have access to 9:16 cameras we plan to

use them in our 16:9 video productions. Since we

will have bi-directional video access through NDI

on both systems. We can also build fun Vertical

Video frames and bring in live video from our 9:16

camera sources.

TIP: We plan to slide in the 9:16 live video with a

PNG overlay. So it looks like a phone in the video

production. We can also record this segment and

post later on social media.

Here’s how it looks during a live broadcast

Here is a look at our vMix live streaming

software which currently only support

widescreen formats.

We can still bring in the 9:16 video in a fun

way during our 16:9 broadcast like this.

Here is just one example of the two worlds

blending together. We can then use the video

recordings to be upload via 9:16 on social

media.

Using Adobe After Effects & Other editing software

As you can see setting up a

video editing software to work

with 9:16 video is quite easy.

Here we have Adobe After

Effects using 9:16 video with all

the abilities to create a

professional and polished looking

video.
