On The Way

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment (Mt 22:37-38).” Perhaps the most neglected dimension of this command is the last: the mind. Our culture sees a vast divide between faith and reason, between emotions and the mind. People typically associate faith with emotions, not reason. Our Lord’s words serve as a corrective, reminding us that authentic devotion to Him necessarily involves the mind. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “There is an organic connection between our spiritual life and the dogmas” (CCC 89). The Church’s firm conviction and constant teaching is that her dogmas and doctrines should not just garner our notional assent but truly form our souls. They have an organic connection — a vital, nourishing bond — with our spiritual life. We should be formed by divine teaching.

It is the devil that traffics in pure emotion, cliches, and propaganda. Thinking clearly about our faith is our best defense against him. In The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis clearly (and cleverly) describes the demons as less concerned about putting things into our minds than keeping things out of our minds. Our reasoning and argument are never to their advantage. When we become attentive to truth rather than propaganda or cliches, when we value reason above pure emotion, then we have shifted the battle from the devil’s field to God’s. Victory is more assured. Spiritual reading increases our ability to love the Lord with our mind. This kind of reading differs from other kinds in both content and practice. As regards content, the two most important ingredients for spiritual reading are doctrine and devotion. Such books should present the Church’s doctrine with clarity and confidence. At the same time, spiritual reading is not a theology textbook or catechism. It should help us interiorize the Church’s teachings in such a way that Christ is formed in us more and more (cf. Gal 4:19). (A list of recommended spiritual reading is posted here.) Second, we do not do spiritual reading the same way we do other reading. We read spiritual books not for information or leisure, but to imbue our minds with the holy and sacred. It is the means by which we set our mind on the things that are above, not on things that are on earth (Col 3:2). This exercise is all the more important since we live in a culture whose media distracts us with trivialities and assaults us with noxious ideas and images. This requires a distinct way of going about our spiritual reading. The best practice is to set aside a time and a place you will not be interrupted and give fifteen minutes each day to the book you have chosen. The reading might inspire you in the moment…or not. The important thing is that by way of the reading, your devotion progresses along the sure and certain path of the true doctrine. ~ Fr. Scalia

Stewardship

When God Acts In Our Lives, We Need To Say Thank You!

In today’s Gospel, we hear that after Jesus healed ten lepers, only one returned to thank and praise Him. The other nine took what happened for granted and went on their way. We too are guilty, if we think hard about it, of doing the same—God blesses us, and we go on our way, forgetting to give thanks and praise to Him. In today’s busy world, we need to carve out time to think about the things that God has given us, and then carve out even more time to properly thank and praise Him for those gifts. Being mindful and praiseful for our blessings will help us better understand our lives, the important things in our lives, and how God works every day in our lives. We need to be more like the man who returned, full of humility and gratitude for the Lord’s work, and not like the nine who left—too busy to thank God for what He had done.

A BIG Thank You from Father Scalia A big thank you to all the volunteers who made last Saturday’s parish picnic such a wonderful event! We had a lot of hard workers from the Knights of Columbus, Saint James School PTO, American Heritage Girls, Boy Scouts, CYO, Girl Scouts, and the Hispanic Community. Your generosity of time and effort made it a great day of fun and fellowship for the entire Parish!

- Fr. Scalia Welcome Fr. Joel Kwame

Elias Newton Wins National Competition

Elias Newton, a 5th grader at St. James Catholic School won a national Back to School competition and in turn, the company Code Ninjas has donated $1000 to St. James Catholic School. Elias’s video entry for the Code Ninjas National Back to School Contest, was one of only three chosen out of hun-dreds of entries from across the country. For the competition, Elias’s video—parodied “Old Town Road” and talked about how things he learned in school helped him at Code Ninjas and visa versa. Principal Mary Sue and Elias are hoping to use the funds to bring cool places including the Vatican to the students of St. James through virtual reality technology.
