The SH6 Springlands Intersec-tion upgrade will provide welcome construction work for the region after the project was awarded to local company Fulton Hogan Marlborough.

Marlborough Roads highway manager Frank Porter says the $1.3m project should begin within the month and if conditions were favourable over winter, could be finished as early as October.

“It’s really gratifying to see jobs going to local contractors,”Mr Porter said.

“It’s a boost for Blenheim and it means we’ve got locally experi-enced contractors working in their own community

“People can expect to see work begin in the next month, and if Mother Nature smiles on us over winter then we hope to be largely finished around October.”

The left turn into Boyce Street will be built next year to allow time for property acquisition in relation to land now occupied by the Motor Centre.

“We ask people to bear with us while we do this work over the next few months – there will be some disruption, but it’s a small price to pay for helping to keep people safe,” Mr Porter said.

“Building roundabouts in the middle of a busy road will in-evitably result in some delays, but together with Fulton Hogan we’re committed to doing whatever they can to minimise delays.”

Roundabout contract goes to local firm

owners to be vigilant and to secure their vessels after a series of boat burglaries at Picton’s Waikawa Marina.

Marine electronics, petrol tanks, and a gas stove were among the items targeted in the raids on at least five boats this week.

Police said it appeared the offenders were forcing locks to gain entry to the vessels.

Boat owner Aaron Black-more, who works at Oddie’s

Marine, said while he had not been a victim of the raids, he had been at the marina checking on his boat every day.

“It’s very frustrating be-cause there is not much you can do and it is hard (for police) to catch them,” he said.

“It’s like being broken into in your own home, it’s an invasion.”

Two other boat owners, who didn’t want to be named, said word of the

thefts had spread quickly.They said it wasn’t the first

time the marina had been targeted.

“It comes in patterns be-cause people come from out of town, load up with stuff and then go back and sell it on TradeMe,” one of the men said.

“It’s simple to steal from here.

“There is security, but the cameras face the carpark and not the multimillion-dollar boats.”

A local tobacco retailer is in hot water after selling cigarettes to a minor.

The sting was carried out in Marlborough and Nelson last week by the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service and of the 34 retail-ers they tested, four sold cigarettes to the underage volunteer, with just one of these occurring in Marlborough.

That retailer will face a $500 fine.

All psychoactive products, aka legal highs, became illegal as of yesterday.

The government has temporarily banned the synthetic drugs nationwide while manufactur-ers conduct testing to prove they are low risk.

It is now an offence to possess, supply or sell these products and Marlborough’s two sellers, Boots n All and Tiger Takeaways, will have to comply or risk hefty fines or even jail time.

Meanwhile, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s Addictions Services will con-tinue to meet the demand for services by those addicted to synthetic cannabis and party pills.

Legal highs are manufactured chemicals that can mimic the effects of illegal drugs such as cannabis and amphetamines.

“Use of these chemicals has been known to lead to dependence and withdrawal problems however most people will be able to stop taking these products without experiencing serious side effects,” Tom Morton, Clinical Director

of the Emergency Departments, said.Addictions Specialist Dr Michael Haskew

said withdrawal symptoms could range from mild to more severe, and could occasionally require specialist advice.

“We encourage those who are experiencing problems related to withdrawals regarding these substances to contact the Addictions Service or their GP for further assistance.”

He said depending on the client’s activity they could experience a variety of short term effects.

“The treatment of these problems involves a substance misuse assessment, education about their possible effects, and psychosocial support to help address issues that are perpetuating use, or that may lead to relapse.”

1914, the population of New Zealand has more than quadrupled.

He has lived through two World Wars, a depression and has seen 21 prime ministers in power.

Ian yesterday celebrated his 100th birthday with a morning tea at his home, Marina Cove Retirement Vil-lage in Picton.

About 30 people, including residents and members of Ian’s immediate fam-ily, were there to mark his centenary.

“I thought there would only be a dozen or so here,” Ian said.

“But everybody brought their friends.“I hope we have enough tucker!”Still sharp as a tack, Ian put his

longevity down to a healthy lifestyle and keeping active.

At 99, he was the oldest-ever com-petitor in the South Island Masters Games and gets regular exercise in the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 pool, which he describes as a ‘lifesaver’ for seniors.

Neil said it was the first 100th birthday celebrated at Marina Cove.

She gave a speech honouring her friend before presenting Ian with a bottle of what she jokingly described as ‘medicinal whisky’.

“You are a fine example of how to grow well and we are very proud of you,” she said.

Ian will celebrate his birthday with family and friends from all over the world at a party this Saturday night.

Pink, says he might be forced to sell his business at the end of this year due to a significant increase in liquor licensing fees.

Mr Pink, who has owned the bar at Red-woodtown for five years, says his fees have gone up nearly 550 per cent from$793.24 for three years to $4128.50.

The new fees, set by the government, were implemented in December last year and are worked out based on a venue’s ‘risk’ factor.

Instead of one national fee of $793.24, venues are now allocated points depending on their type, operating hours and how many liquor laws they have broken.

These points are tallied and the venue allocated one of five risk categories from very low to very high.

Licence holders now pay an application fee as well as an annual fee.

The changes were brought in by the government to ensure licensing costs were met by the alcohol industry, rather than ratepayers.

“I find it very unfair,” said Mr Pink, whose licence is up for renewal at the end of the year.

“I just don’t know what I am going to do.“We are just breaking even here.“Any small venue just doesn’t have that

sort of money hanging around.”Now classed as high risk, he is consider-

ing selling the pub, which employs three staff.

“But will I even be able to sell it? The new owner is just going to be in the same position as me.”

Licensing inspector for Marlborough District Council Karen Winter said some ‘very high risk’ venues, such as nightclubs, were now paying over $5500 over three years.

“It has gone up substantially,” she said.“We do sympathise with the licence

holders but this is legislation set by the government.”

She said some venues were scaling back their operating hours in order to lower their fees.

Work is being carried out to bring the old David Johnston Gallery building up to earthquake standards.

Owner David Lloyd said the building, on Max-well Road in Blenheim, was not being demolished but rather the top level was being removed.

The building would go back to one storey and would have some further rebuilding work carried out before new tenants moved in.

Mr Lloyd, who used the space next to Mango restaurant as a campaign office when he ran for council last year, would not say who the new tenants were.

Ingredients:• 1/3 cup chopped onion

• 1/3 cup chopped celery

• 2 tablespoons butter

• 4 cups diced peeled potatoes

• 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth

• 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

• 2 cups milk

• 1/4 teaspoon pepper

• Dash paprika

• Seasoned croutons and minced fresh parsley

Instructions:In a large saucepan, saute onion and celery in butter until tender. Add potatoes and broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until potatoes are tender.Puree in small batches in a blender until smooth; return to the pan. Stir in the cheese, milk, pepper and paprika. Cook and stir over low heat until the cheese is melted. Garnish with croutons and parsley. Serves 8.

A muddy good time will be had in Havelock this weekend as participants flock to the popular Muddy Buddy adventure run.

Organisers Sport Tasman are hoping many people will turn up in crazy costumes to tackle the

1km adventure course through the Havelock estuary on Sunday.

The event, which sees hundreds of people running and crawl-ing through the mud, had to be postponed back in March after a sewage spill.

Online registrations will close at noon today, but would-be competitors can still register on Sunday from 11.30am.

Entry costs $10 per person or $25 for families.

nated for this year’s Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show on July 19 which organiser Carol Taylor hopes will encour-age brides to enter.

The main prize will be a holiday for two to Coconuts Beach Club Resort and Spa in Samoa, valued at $2800.

“This is an amazing prize which I am positive the winning bride and her husband will thoroughly enjoy, so make sure you get your entry in quick so you don’t miss out,” Carol said.

The show will be limited to 25 bride entries and already three have been received.

The categories from which a winner will be chosen are as follows:

- Audience choice- Miss photogenic, sponsored by

the Sun Newspaper- $300 cash lucky draw, spon-

sored by Bernadette ThomasThere will also be a new cat-

egory for this year’s show - Bride-groom of the year.

“It’s a good option for the brides out there who don’t want to enter as they can still enter their husbands,” Carol said.

There will be a “fantastic prize”

Marlborough Convention Centre from 7:30pm and tickets for the event cost $50 each, which include a light supper.

Blenheim is a lover of classic cars and has fond memories from her childhood.

Her father owns a 1972 MGB GT and Anna remembers not bring able to see over the dashboard as a small girl, but loved the chance to get out on the road with her dad.

Her favourite trips were on the Classic Car Club runs to Pelorus or Lake Rotoiti but due to lack of space in the MG mum was relegated to follow behind in her Honda Civic!

Anna’s uncle had a Jaguar and her cousin a Datsun 120y.

Her mum’s first classic car was an MX5 but this has progressed to a Honda s2000 – a roadster produced from 1999 to 2009.

Dad still has the MGB although the engine has been reconditioned by classic car mechanic, Owen Packham.

As a young girl, Anna and her sister would do battle over who got to ride in the MG, despite mum having the newer MX5.

“It was just way cooler,” explains Anna. “And mum always drove with the roof

down – rain or shine. It was freezing!”Also involved with the Hospice Classic

Car Display, Anna enjoys spreading the word about Blenheim’s classic cars and does quite a bit on social media, particularly Facebook.

She also loves the big screen and says mainly of her car passions originated from the movies.

Asked if she had a particular car that she’d one day like to own, her eyes light up and with no hesitation she says, “The black Chevy Impala from Supernatural!”

Other cars on her ‘must have’ list include the Ford Anglia from Harry Potter and the DeLorean from Back to the Future.

On the subject of Anglia’s, Anna remem-bers stories of her mum having one in her youth and fitting 12 people in it!

Anna enjoys driving the MG but says it’s pretty hard.

“It’s just a small steering wheel and really hard to turn – no power-assistance!” and what does she think of driving the Honda s2000?

“Mum says I can drive that when it snows in Hawaii!”

Hmmm, don’t hold your breath then, Anna!

Ford Cortina MK1 GT which can be seen amongst the collection at Omaka Classic Cars.

Ford created this family-sized car to sell in large numbers aimed at buyers of the Morris Oxford and Vauxhall Victor.

It was designed to be economical, cheap to run and easy and inexpensive to produce at Ford’s Dagenham plant in the UK.

VINEYARD WORKER CAUGHT STEALING

At 9.35am on Wednesday a 32-year-old Argentinean part-time vineyard worker was arrested and charged with shoplifting after being identified as the person who took wine from the cellar door at Villa Maria.

She has been bailed to appear in the Blenheim District Court on May 19.

TEEN BUSTEDAt 6pm on Wednesday, an

18-year-old unemployed female was arrested for failing to appear in the Blenheim District Court.

She was held in custody to appear before the court yesterday.

DRIVER FALLS ASLEEPAt 4.15pm yesterday, police attended a vehi-

cle accident on State Highway 1 near Para Road.

They said a driver on medication fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into trailer being towed by an-other vehicle.

There were no injuries as result of the accident and only minor damage to both vehicles.The driver of the offending

vehicle has been forbidden to drive on medical grounds.

THREE ARRESTEDThree men were arrested on

Tuesday in separate incidents.A 29-year-old male was arrested

for disorderly behaviour in the Blenheim CBD and released with a pre-charge warning.

A 21-year-old male was also arrested, on a warrant, and a male painter arrested following a domestic-related incident.

The Huff & Puff Queen Charlotte Regatta will be held on the Queen’s Birthday weekend, Saturday May 31 and Sunday June 1.

This event, put on by Waikawa Boating Club, covers a regatta from Waikawa Bay to Resolution Bay.

The runner comes ashore and runs 11km to Furneaux Lodge with the yachts sailing to Furneaux.

The next morning the runner runs from Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove and yachts sail to Punga Cove where sailors and runners meet for breakfast.

On completion of the event, a prizegiving will be held at Waikawa Boating Club.

Marlborough Harriers is a holding 12km pack-run/walk from Spring Creek on Saturday at 2pm.

The event is about 12km along the riverbank and stopbank and returns via the road, but shorter distances are available for walkers and children.

Participants are asked to be at the meeting point at 1.45pm for a briefing.

Everyone is welcome to participate and there is also children’s run organised.

It’s nearly that time of the year again, that one day of the year when we stop to take time and appreciate mothers everywhere, and I thought I’d do the same.

Looking at the game at the professional level, there are some pretty amazing athletes, coming back after giving birth and reach-ing their sporting pinnacle.

Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters won the US Open in 2009, 16 months after giving birth.

It was her third tournament after returning.

Scottish golfer Catriona Mat-thew played in the 2009 Women’s British Open less than three

months after giving birth. The 40-year-old had never won a

tournament before, but proceeded to clean up, winning the title by three shots.

But it’s not just about the stars on the TV.

Mums selflessly play a large part in helping our young sportspeople develop their games.

It may well have been different for others, so apologies for gen-eralising, but dad was always the one in the backyard playing catch or kicking the ball back in the day, but mum was the one doing all the things us kids didn’t want to do.

We’d run around in the mud,

tackling each other, and then mar-vel how our clothes wound up all clean on the bed a few hours later.

We’d break the laces on our boots at footy, and they’d be magi-cally fixed by next week’s game.

We’d come in from the big backyard cricket match for a break, and there’d be drinks on the table waiting.

There would always be bandages on hand, oranges sliced up, and occasionally, the bath would be running.

So spoil your mum on Sunday. Happy Mothers’ Day.

Results:The Blenheim Canine Training club would

like to thank Mighty Mix Dog Food and Riverby Single Estate Vineyard who sponsored their May Jumpers Champ show last weekend with 110 dogs and 60 handlers competing in 18 events.

The event was judged by visiting judges Irene Lock, Martin Bush and Nick Chester at the Rewi Murray Polo Park.

Local club member Sandra Goodwin with Finn came out top dog in the medium dogs, while Roselle Bremmers and Quiz (Waimaka-riri) came in top dog in the maxi dogs and Lola Anderson and Maggie (Nelson) in the Micro/Mini dogs.

Other successes by local club members included Natasha Neame who gained three first places with three of her dogs and Marcela Zatloukalova and Toby who narrowly missed out on top dog with 2nd ,3rd and two 4th places.

Clear round runs were also recorded by Wendy Reynolds and Crystal, Stephanie Hayes and Maisie, Jane Norton with Tiffany and Theo, Shona Sam with Oscar and Kimi, Claire Taylor with Gem, and Karina Greenall with Tia.

Show secretary Karina Greenall would also like to thank all the club members and their friends and families who worked tirelessly over the two days making the show run so smoothly.

BCTC hold agility and obedience classes all year round at the A&P showground and welcome enquires from new members.

Top dogs

SPRING CREEK RUN

By Kristy MartinAlmost 3000 runners are set to

participate in the annual Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon tomorrow.

Race organiser Anna Polson said 80 per cent of competitors were coming from out of town, with most from the Canterbury region.

Forty-five runners are coming from Australia to take part in the event, the eighth annual for Saint Clair, plus a few from the US and UK, and one from Norway.

“It’s been pretty manic the past few days,” said Anna.

“We’ve got just under 3000 (runners) – that’s a lot of people to look after!

“We’ve got a lot of first-timers, as many people use this as their starting point for other events.

“We have a gentle approach, with music, entertainment and

food along the course so it’s more of a jolly old time and that seems to be popular, especially with women.”

There were also families of up to a dozen people meeting up to compete together.

“It’s a real bonding thing,” Anna said.

This year’s event had also raised $23,000 for the charity group Beat Bowel Cancer Aotearoa.

This was through a portion of the entry fees donated and 100 runners that opted to pay extra specifically for the cause.

The race starts and finishes at the Saint Clair Cellar Door on Selmes Road, with the first briefing at 8.35am.
