Marlborough Police will be taking part in the trans-Tasman Operation Unite this weekend and the national Easter road policing operation, Crossroads.

The operations aim to reduce the number of victims from alcohol related crime and road trauma.

As part of Operation Unite, a joint initiative with Australian Police, New Zealand police

officers are encouraging peo-ple to re-think how they host gatherings at home, how much they are drinking and their behaviour during and after drinking.

“Police are dealing with the consequences of people who have consumed too much al-cohol on a daily basis, whether that is drink-driving, antisocial behaviour or victimisation of

people who are unable to look after themselves,” said Tasman District Commander, Super-intendent Richard Chambers.

Police will be visiting bars and patrolling liquor ban areas over the holiday weekend.

At the same time driver be-haviour will be closely moni-tored as part of Operation Crossroads and the 4kmh speed tolerance will be in

force.Any driver stopped can ex-

pect to be breath tested.“We want to minimise the op-

portunities for alcohol-related harm and road trauma this weekend,” Superintendent Chambers said.

Operation Unite and Opera-tion Crossroads began at 6pm yesterday and will run until 6am on Monday.

Easter weekend police blitz

By Kristy MartinThe circus came to town and students

enjoyed clowning around at Whitney Street School on Wednesday.

About 120 kids took joy in dressing up as clowns, painting each other’s faces, learning some juggling and magic tricks, practising their tightrope walking and creating balloon animals.

Some of the children even got to throw pies at each other.

Staff member Christee Dalzell said the one-day clown school was a way to reward the well-behaved kids.

“Every term, we have a Big Day Out where we reward the students who have been making good choices and this term we decided to have a Clown School for the day,” she said.

“It’s a really fun way to end the term for the kids who have earned it.”

Clowning around

The figures from the latest cruise ship season show Picton is feeling the positive swell of cruise ship money, but is Blenheim?

That’s the question a Blenheim local has put forward as he believes Blenheim was not offering enough to cruise customers .

A report prepared for Cruise New Zealand stated in the 2012-13 cruise ship season, the average port passenger spending per day

around New Zealand was $130. The same report said overall, 25 cruise ships,

carrying a combined 32,000 passengers and 11,400 crew, docked for 31 days in Picton during the season.

Management consultant Peter Chapman said he was concerned Blenheim did not have a unique selling point to take advantage.

“We take people off the cruise ships and

drive them around the wineries. “At the end of the day, the Ukraine makes

more wine than New Zealand Destination Marlborough general manager

Tracy Johnston said Blenheim was seen as part of the full experience.

Ms Johnston listed the Omaka Aviation Centre and the Blenheim Riverside Railway among other attractions to Blenheim.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter airlifted a woman to hospital with multi-trauma injuries on Wednesday afternoon following a car and truck crash near the Rai saddle on SH6.

The helicopter landed beside the scene where the sole occupant of the car, a 67-year-old woman, had to be cut from the vehicle using specialist cutting equipment.

She was treated by the helicopter’s onboard intensive care paramedic before being flown to Nelson Hos-pital in a stable condition.

By Adam PoulopoulosAn iconic old brick church in

Ward is set for demolition, but the congregation is hopeful parts of the building will live on.

St Peter Chanel’s Catholic Church, which has stood on the corner of State Highway 1 and Gulch Road since 1924, was badly damaged by the Seddon earthquake last year.

Expressions of interest are being taken to extract value from parts of the structure, including a roof gable lined with rimu timber, windows, doors and the bell.

The window for offers closes on May 29.

Church community member Kevin Loe said they were trying to make the best of a tough situation.

“It is a lovely old building that represents the beginning of our community, but the obvious course of action was demolition.

“The roof in particular could be a building block for another building, and it’s our hope someone sees the value in that.”

The church was actually cat-egorised as a risk after the 2011 Christchurch quakes.

In the meantime the small congre-gation first met in the little social centre next to the church, but now has use of St Peter’s, the Ward church of the Anglican/Presbyterian Cooperating Parish.

This welcome is returned in Sed-don where their church was the one that was damaged and its community

Ward church to be demolished

now worships in the Catholic church.

Mr Loe said it was important to try and find a “silver lining.”

“We both believe there proba-bly isn’t a need for both churches in the area anyway.

“In the end, in terms of wor-

ship, it is only a building, a house for our community, but we can do that anywhere.

“There’s already a great rela-tionship that exists, and we’re becoming one big community.”

No date has been set for demo-lition.

Wild weather causes havoc

Canvastown will celebrate its 150th anniversary with an all-day event tomorrow.

The day starts with a blessing from local Iwi at 6am, and a range of activities, including gold pan-ning, woodchopping and on-stage entertainment will begin at 10am.

The period costume ball starts at 7pm in the Town Hall.

Entry is by gold coin, except for the ball, which is ticket-only.

CANVASTOWN 150 YEARS

Marlborough’s wild weather looks set to abate slightly heading into the weekend, with the Easter Bunny able to poke his head up for air.

High winds and heavy rain lashed the region yesterday, peak-ing yesterday afternoon as the tropical low slipped down the country.

MetService meteorologist Daniel Corbett said about 70-80mm of rain were expected in low-lying ar-eas like Blenheim and the Wairau Valley, and even more in exposed places.

He said the weekend proper

would look better, as the winds shifted in a more westerly direc-tion.

“On Saturday and Sunday you’ll probably see some blue skies along with some showers. It certainly won’t be as yucky as yesterday.

“The Easter Bunny will be able to sit in the garden.”

As of 3pm yesterday Picton had experienced more than 100mm of rain since Wednesday night, with the weather causing sewage to overflow.

Overflow had run into the har-bour, marina and Waitohi stream.

Council operations and mainte-nance engineer Stephen Rooney advised discretion.

“We advise everyone to give it a few days to let the water clear in the harbour, and in Waikawa Bay.

“Anyone coming into contact with sea water, or surface water ponding around the town, should be aware that they need to follow good hygiene practices.”

Power was cut to parts of the Marlborough Sounds yesterday, and Marlborough Lines Opera-tions Manager Brian Tapp said staff were working hard to repair

the outages. Marlborough District Council

assets and services manager Mark Wheeler said there had been reports of trees falling over and debris flying around.

He said holidaymakers should continue to take care on the roads.

“We’ve just put out a general warning asking people to be cau-tious with driving. They need to be careful with the winds and surface flooding.”

The stretch of road between Picton and Tirohanga experienced surface flooding yesterday.

This large marquee was upended by Thursday’s wild weather at the Brethren School on Taylor Pass Rd.

Boaties in the Marlborough Sounds are being urged to stay safe over the Easter weekend.

Maritime Officers will join the Wellington Police launch Lady Elizabeth IV on Queen Charlotte Sound today and tomorrow, hand-ing out free safe boating packs and making sure those on the water are following key safety practices.

Lessons include avoiding alcohol, suitable lifejackets and keeping cellphones in sealable plastic bags.

By Adam Poulpoulos Thirteen years after founding

her design business, Simone Hill has opened her new shop, and she couldn’t be happier.

Mrs Hill opened Cinnamon House, on Park Terrace, at the start of the month.

The store is an extension of Cinnamon House Design, a business she began in 2001.

Despite continuing to unpack and settle in, she said the early public response had been positive.

“People like the idea of being able to build a set all under one roof.

“I’ve had amazing positive feedback. People have been saying ‘It’s just what Blen-

heim’s needed.” Prior to opening Mrs Hill

said she would meet clients

at their homes or over coffee. While she still does that, she

said having a permanent base

helped. “When I went to a house

there was always a risk I’d be missing the one sample I’d need.

“Now I can go round to their place once, then they can come back here and we can really play around with ideas.”

Mrs Hill’s background in hospitality has seen her kit out a lot of hotels and motels, as well as private homes.

She described her style as “eclectic.”

“I like everything. I’ve done everything from tiny granny-flats through to high-end con-temporary mansions.”

Cinnamon House is open from Monday to Saturday.

By Adam Poulopoulos The owner of a vacant Market

Street property said the space’s versatility means it could become almost anything in the future.

One of the bottom units at 14 Market Street has been up for lease for the last two months.

The other units in the building are currently filled by Blenheim Com-munity Law, John Truman Valuers and Call Care Centre.

The empty 303 square metre unit was bought by Nelson-based Nick Taber, of Padstone Investments, in September last year.

About two thirds of the unit is shop floor space, with an office and commercial kitchen making up the rest.

The building has been home to various businesses over the years, including a furniture store, cafes and restaurants.

Mr Taber said the options for the building were limitless.

“It’s so versatile because it has a commercial kitchen and com-mercial extraction equipment, so it could make a good restaurant.

“On the other hand it could suit someone looking for a showroom, and it would suit retail.”

Market Street unit up for lease

Mr Taber added the sur-rounding area was made up mostly of office spaces, and the unit could make for an affordable office option.

“People perhaps want a central location without the expense.

“What we’re asking is no more that what you’d be

paying for office space on the second floor, and you’d have your own signage and identity.”

Mr Taber said between September and February, he and his wife had been travel-ling each day to renovate the unit.

Recently, Thomas’s De-

partment Store and Big Bucket had held sales in the space, but Mr Taber said interest in the property had been developing.

“There’s a lot of interest in the property on TradeMe.

“Some similar businesses have contemplated splitting the space too.”

14 Market Street has been up for lease for the last two months.

Only some local businesses will be open this weekend as they comply with law and save them-selves a fine from the Department of Labour.

Under the Shop Trading Hours Repeal Act only certain busi-nesses can be open today and Easter Sunday, two of four non-trading days on the calendar.

Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to $1000.

Both Saturday and Monday are normal trading days.

Conditions for shops on those days are as follows:

All supermarkets must be closed except for Picton Fresh Choice, which is allowed to open because they operate in a holiday destina-tion.

All bars, restaurants, cafes and cellar doors are allowed to be open, but customers cannot

be served alcohol without also dining.

Dairies and service stations are permitted to serve only high-need items people can’t put off buying until the next day, like food, drinks and petrol.

Shops can provide a service, such as cutting hair or renting videos, but cannot sell goods.

Pharmacies have no restrictions on opening hours.

Who’s open this Easter?

participation sport dont want the WHO of A and P Park. Ha. But when does quality of the teams and players play first over quantity. Softball currently hav one of the worlds up and coming pitchers and two other players in our national team mix...Lets get along...

ABUSE OF KNOWLEDGEWhat is the definition of abuse of

knowledge? A potential employer contacting your current employer to let them know you have applied for a job with them. (as unbeknown to you they know each other personally) Shame on all “professionals” who have done that. Shame on you!!

HIGH STREET DEVELOPMENTRe development of the high street top

How many blenheim football players r in the white soxs. How many blenhiem softball players r in the black soxs. NOT HARD 2 WORK THAT ONE OUT IS IT.

Re comment abt softball n football them moving isn’t the problem the problem is if softball did havta move wud cost a heap to build a new diamond and sheds for them to use y cant they move the football instead they r already set up at landsdown park they just need a bit of grass n thy r away the softball need dea skin diamond so dnt make them move n leave dea home turf. Softball is becoming a popular sport here with the young ones so don’t destroy it.

Move football keep softball where it is an give them 2 skin diamonds.

Football all u need is a grass paddock. Where softball needs like home run fences an skin Diamonds. Cages...Can lansdowne do all that.. Why don’t foot-ball move if they think they the biggest participation sport in Marlborough

Lovely to have the royals visit but was very disappointed with students from mgc pushing in front of me and pushing my pram back with my 4 year old in it so they could get closer how rude I was very disappointed as I was trying to tend to my 3 year old while breast feeding my 1 year old. How inconsiderate.

WHEELBARROW THEFTTo the person who stole our black

wheelbarrow from Rarangi Beach on Sunday April 6th!! We work our backsides off for the things we buy! We had only left i for 15 mins to walk down the beach. Then you had the gall to leave tracks to the Blue Gum Corner parking lot. You should do the right thing and return it!! It is not yours to keep!!

YOUTH NEED MORERe: BMX track, I agree that is a great

idea. The youth of blenheim need more. With our rates going up, do somthing decent MDC. Me and my mates spent most weekends at the old BMX track up Taylor Pass. Good times. Really hope something is done, my kids would love it. D.

BURGER KINGWent to get Burger King in blenheim

on monday nyte. Service sucked at the drive thru, all our

burgers were cold including the chicken tenders and the chips were not cooked properly.

Cost me $37. I mean if ur gana work at a fast food outlet, sudnt you at least enjoy and take pride in the end produce??

Im glad my partner went and got our money bk. Poor customer service and food :-(

GRAPE SPILLAGEApril 9th article. Why does the rate

payer pay for the cleanup bill? Why not the owner /driver of the truck? or owner of where grapes were grown, harvested from? Barbara.

LOTTERIES COMMISSIONI reckon the lotteries commission seg-

regates. If you don’t buy a triple dip you are not in the draw for the bonus prizes. alot of people are scratching to pay the minimum price of $2.50. any body who purchases a ticket should qualify. deno

Just an idea, to make a point against the service that charges you $46.90 per month to watch t.v. ripping you off.. give a mate a dozen beers and ask them to record those programs for 6 months. Then simply watch that for the next 5 years. Might cost you a dozec beers but not $46.90 a month, to watch the same thing over, and over, and over. lol

Dear Ed,A big thank you to the thoughtful person

who rid the footpath of a heap of cardboard dumped beside a rubbish bin in Redwood-town at least a week ago.

Nearby shop owners were not guilty I hasten to add.

Presumably it is not in the bin mans contract to remove such litter and as the wet days pro-gressed the cardboard had soaked up water.

What a mess. Surely if people can afford something encased in that much wrapping they can afford to use a small amount of fuel to take their leftover rubbish to the recycling depot.

Littering used to be an offence. If it still is I hope that your name or ad-

dress could be deciphered and that you are ‘dobbed in’.

Help! Royal photos wanted!By Adam Poulopoulos

One hundred years after her grandmother met Queen Mary, Sandra Morritt had her own brush with royalty - only problem is she has no evidence it ever happened.

Mrs Morritt is hopeful someone snapped a photo of her chatting with Prince William, on the Anglican Church side of Seymour Square, on Thursday.

She said she came from her

Alfred Street address around 7:45am.

“When I got there only one other person was there - eve-ryone else was on the Watery Mouth side.

“I was talking to the TV3 reporter who said to stay put, because William would come down my side and Kate was going down the other.”

Hours later she had a chance to meet him.

“I put my hand out for him

to shake, and I thought that was all - I didn’t have time to curtsy or anything,” she said.

“He asked me where I was from and how long I’d been here, and then he said ‘It’s much nicer over here so you should stay.”

All up, they spoke for about a minute, and Mrs Morritt said she was struck by how “natural and easy” it all was.

Originally from Northern Ireland, Mrs Morritt said

she and her family have always had a connection to the royals.

Months before war broke out in 1914 her grandmother, dressed as an Irish colleen, was presented to Queen Mary in Nottingham.

“To this day, I don’t know why she was chosen,” she said.

Mrs Morritt herself has seen the Queen Mother, Prince Charles and Prince

Andrew at different times of her life, while her nephew James works for the Duke of Edinburgh.

She returns home for a holiday at the end of next month, and said any photos of her encounter with Wil-liam would go down a treat.

“Our family are real royal-ists from a long way back.

“It would be very special for my mum and James to see photos.” Sandra Morritt.

By Adam PoulopoulosFrom now on, Girl Guides

around Marlborough can be sure they will both stay safe and stick out when they’re on the water.

Picton Girl Guides were pre-sented with 30 new lifejackets on Monday night, and 26 of them are bright pink.

The group raised $1250 in six weeks to pay for them, a sum that was matched by a Picton donor.̀

The lifejackets will be avail-able for all 100 Marlborough Girl Guides to use, and the public can use them for a small fee.

Girl Guides Marlborough district coordinator Helen Ash-worth said she was proud of the group’s work.

“It was quite amazing. I put three months aside for it.”

Fundraising activities included washing cars and boats, mowing

Renwick School students received a sweet surprise yesterday when the ‘Easter Bunny’ visited bearing baskets of chocolates.

The school was chosen to re-ceive the special visit after student Zoe McLean (9) won the Clubs of Marlborough ‘Great Easter Choco-late Giveaway’ colouring competi-tion.

Classic Hits and Makana Confec-tions were also part of the promotion with Makana handcrafting 525 Easter truffles for the students.

Zoe’s colouring beat entries from schools all over Marlborough, some-thing her peers were very grateful for.

“It’s Easter Bunny, see I told you it was real,” one pupil squealed excitedly.

“Thanks Zoe for the chocolates,” another shouted out from the crowd.

Zoe also received her own basket of Easter treats.

lawns and making jam. Mrs Ashworth said

the colour scheme was part of a bigger branding push, which has also included pink teardrop flags, and pink and blue gazebos.

“It’s part of our 2014 strategy - we’re hop-ing to generate a re-ally strong brand around

Marlborough.” She said the Picton

Midwinter Swim in June would be the ideal time to unleash the lifejackets properly.

“The girls will have their Girl Guides uni-forms on with the pink lifejackets, ploughing into the water, and that will be great.”

Step 2 GrowthIndependent Educational Home-Based Childcare

We look forward to hearing from you!

Have you thought about home-based childcare?C J XQH V WOE L ZSF M TG N UD K YRB I PA

Heres what some of our parents have to say…“ O ur child’s carer organises fun activities for our child with her next learning steps and interests in mind” – Janelle C.“ F inding such an amazing carer has helped ease the transition of being a full time mother to balancing part time work with time at home. Step to growth has a fantas-tic philosophy and we always have peace of mind know-ing our little one is in a relaxed home environment with someone we know and trust.” (Anon parent)“ H ome-Based childcare is the next best thing to being at home with the added value of learning designed as fun!” – Lucy W.

“ H ome-based has all the same fun outing and stuff as we do at home, they even get to visit and experience the farm, its great!” -Richie W.

Educator voice“ A s a stay at home mum with a background in Early Childhood Education, Step 2 Growth provides me with the perfect career allowing me to continue doing what I love in my own home environment.I believe more stay at home mums with a real passion for the early years should look at becoming step 2 growth educators where they can educate, grow and shape both their own and other children’s lives in the comfort of their own home.” – Anna P.

“Learning is experience. Everything else is just information”

- Einstein.

A man has appeared in court in Wel-lington over the murder of 37-year-old woman Mei Fan.

David Bain campaigner Joe Karam has been awarded more than $500,000 in damages after he was found to have been defamed.

Karam, 62, was accused of dishonesty in his support of Mr Bain in internet com-ments posted by Kent Parker and David Purkiss in 2009.

The pair were asked to pay defamation and Mr Karam’s legal bill, making it one of the largest defamation damages awards in New Zealand history.

Strong winds and heavy rain left their mark around the country yesterday, wreaking havoc with Easter plans.

The remains of Cyclone Ita left severe flooding in Auckland, landslips in Wel-lington and power outages in various parts of the country.

The weather was expected to continue its journey south last night.

Genesis Energy’s share price rose dramatically when trading opened on the NZX yesterday.

The shares traded as high as $1.83, well above the $1.55 issue price.

The partial sale of Genesis raised more than $733 million from the Crown, and was part of the Government’s asset sales programme.

Kim Dotcom could be set to recover the assets he lost in raids on his home two years ago.

The High Court has declined an order which would have allowed police to keep the items.

The Crown has 14 days to appeal the decision.

Property, including cars and a computer, was seized on a foreign restraining order from Dotcom’s Auckland mansion.

inbriefSport The child prodigy

sports talk

In simple terms, there are two kinds of athletes in the world – those who have the exceptional determination to work hard, and those with remarkable physical gifts.

The best are often a mixture of both.

Last week, the eye was drawn to the world’s youngest snow-boarder. Eighteen-month-old Aspen Haight, from Colorado, begun shredding the slopes when she was ten months old.

You can tell a kid like that has a higher level of coordination, and could probably make a career out of an athletic pursuit if she wanted.

It is easy enough to spot the child prodigy, the infuriatingly talented child who’s smashing home runs while the normal kids learn which end of the bat to hold, or doing tricks on the balance beam while the rest teeter on it like Bambi on ice, trying not to fall off and embarrass themselves.

They can pop up in any sport at any time. Kim Yoon-Mi won her first Olympic speed skating gold aged 13 years 83 days, the youngest person ever to win an Olympic medal.

Wayne Gretzky was such a dominant ice hockey player as a child he would get booed by other kids’ parents.

Ukranian Sergey Karjakin be-came a chess grandmaster at the age of 12 years, 7 months.

There are those who are just physically different. Senegalese 18-year-old Tacko Fall, who plays basketball at high school in the States, is 7 foot 5 and 115 kilos. Perhaps even more remarkably, his seven-year-old brother already stands at 5 foot 9.

“Everywhere I go, people want to take pictures, talk to me, shake my hand, but I am getting used to it now,” Fall said.

So look out – that kid dominat-ing PE class at your kid’s school could be the next big thing in sport.

By Adam PoulopoulosThe high-speed action begins today

in the 55th running of the Cresswell Electrical National Sprint Karting Championships.

The event, at the Cresswell Electri-cal Raceway, has attracted over 160 entries, from as far afield as the Gold Coast, over nine classes.

The meet runs until Sunday. Quali-fying takes place today, before heats, pre-finals and finals take place over the weekend.

Gates open at 7:30am on each day, with racing getting under way at 9am.

Seven local drivers will be taking part in the event, including Leighton Stanton, William Exton, Gary Cooze, Daniel Bugler, his cousin Sam and the Forbes brothers, Tayler and Cooper.

Kartsport Marlborough promotions officer Neil Butts said the event would be attracting between 500 and 600

people to the region. He said locals should come down

and check out the action. “The last time we hosted it was in

2008, so it only comes around every so often.

“It’s the biggest Kartsport meet in New Zealand, and they’re the best karters in the country.”

Heading the entry-list is multi-time New Zealand and South Island cham-pion James Penrose from Loburn in North Canterbury.

Other drivers defending 2013 titles are Matthew Hamilton and Marcus Armstrong from Christchurch, Zach Zaloum from Hastings and Daniel Kinsman from Auckland.

The event is being streamed live on livestream.com on Saturday and Sunday, while fans can also keep up with real-time results on racemonitor.com.
