There is no single interrogation method that willbe most effective in all situations. Smartinvestigators utilized an arsenal of tools andtechniques at their disposal. There are broadlytwo ways to interrogate a suspect i.e.Confrontational and Non-Confrontationalmethods.

The Non-Confrontational approach encouragedthe suspect to make a rational rather than anemotional decision to confess. In addition, itcan uncover a pattern of criminal behaviorinstead of that single incident beinginvestigated. A successful non-confrontationalapproach allows a collaborative decision-making led by the suspect using theinterrogator as a trusted advisor because of therapport and trust that was build in the process, thus giving more opportunities for theinvestigator to succeed.

The Wicklander-Zulawski Non-ConfrontationalMethod also better allow performancemeasurement and coaching of investigators.Supervisors can now confidently guide theirofficers through clearly defined sections of aninterrogation due to its highly structuredapproach.

If you are successful with the confrontationalapproach, you can almost be certain thesuspect would have confessed more quicklyand with fewer struggles using the Wicklander-Zulawski Non-Confrontational method.

The Wicklander-Zulawski’s

NON-CONFRONTATIONAL INTERROGATION

We’ve been involved in countless cases wheremore traditional methods of interrogation wereused, unsuccessfully, after which we were ableto come in and get results using our trained staffand non-confrontational methodology.

…David Zulawski, Co-Chairman,

Wicklander-Zulawski & Associates, Inc.

4 important discoveries appeared during a reviewof 96 cases for companies. The goal was to find outif the interviewers had used the WZ non-confrontational approach in conducting theinterviews and how successful they were in gettinga confession.

The 96 cases were divided into 3 categories asfollow:

• Full W-Z method used, presented well with little or no errors = 44 cases

• Partial W-Z method used, done well enough to count, but with a number of missing parts or errors = 28 cases

• W-Z method not used = 22 cases

The following briefly summarizes the findings:-

3X HIGHER CONFESSION USING W-Z METHODInterestingly, interviewers using the W-Z methodhad confession three times higher than those usingtheir own interview styles.

MORE DISCLOSURES USING W-Z METHODInterviewers using the W-Z method hadconfessions beyond the incident in question butalso discloses to a wider range of thefts and fraudstypes, implications, and policy violations than thosenot using the W-Z method.

68% CONFESSION RATE USING W-Z METHODWhen examined against whether or not the suspectmade an admission, it was found that using eitherthe full or partial W-Z method resulted in aconfession 68% of the time. Many of these couldhave been cold or implication cases—as a result, the actual confession rate may be much higher.

73% NO CONFESSION USING OWN METHODSInvestigators using their own methods obtained aconfession only 27% of the time and no confession73% of the time.

The WZ Non-Confrontational Method:

This highly effective method is a softer more

conversational approach to the interrogation

resulting in fewer denials and objections and

thereby eliminating conflict between the suspect

and interrogator. These WZ proprietary

techniques will encourage a guilty suspect to

admit their involvement in a crime rather than

deny. Since there are fewer denials, the

development of the suspect's confession about

other illegal acts is relatively seamless. With the

diversity of the suspects that law enforcement

personnel face on a daily basis, it is important to

have different approaches to utilize.

Topics included in this module include how to:

• Establish Behavioral Norm

• Develop Rapport

• Introduce Who You Are and What You Do

• Discuss Types of Crimes Investigated

• Explain How Investigations are Conducted

• Summarize Possible Rationalizations

• Introduce First Rationalization

• Change the Subject’s Perspective

• Address Subject’s Hope of Their Mental State

• Create Urgency, Protect Evidence

• Test for Submission

• Ask Assumptive Question

• Ask Follow-up Questions

• Support Subject’s Admission

•Develop the Admission – Who, What, When,

Where, How, and Why

•Complete the Written Statement – Letter of

Explanation

The Behavioral Analysis Interview (BAI) is anon-accusatory interviewing technique thateliminates the innocent and focuses on theguilty. The BAI is designed specifically to elicitverbal and physical behavior from individuals.

1. Room Setting and Preparation:The ideal room setting will be discussed. Theparticipants will learn how the settings canincrease an interviewer’s effectiveness.

2. Interpretation Of Verbal And PhysicalBehavior:

The evaluation of verbal and physical behavioras they relate to truth and deception will bediscussed in depth. The purpose of this sectionis to differentiate between the behavior oftypically truthful and untruthful individuals andthen apply this to the interview and interrogationprocess.

3. The Behavioral Analysis Interview:In this structured interview, the interviewer asksquestions and observes the subject's verbaland physical behavior to make a judgmentabout the individual's involvement in theincident under investigation. Participants willlearn how to use Factual Analysis through areview of factors that help identify possiblesuspects based on the statistical data gatheredduring the interviewing process.

4. Neurolinguistics, Questions of Enticement, and Verbal Indicators.

Questions of Enticement are behaviorprovoking, non-accusatory questions that enticea suspect to change or consider changing theiroriginal story. Enticement questions are used toidentify the true status of the subject and toenhance the ability of the investigator todevelop the subject's admission.

OVERVIEW

The most difficult subject is one who will not talkat all, and prolonging his confinement will onlyserve to increase the difficulty. Hence, the useof effective and legitimate persuasivetechniques is necessary to get reluctantsubjects to talk voluntarily and truthfully.

Personalities of difficult subjects differ fromindividual to individual. Like in a deck of cards, they can be broadly categorized as follow:

Jack - Betrays his anxiety about what isgoing to happen to him.

Queen - Displays no emotion whatever andwill not speak a word.

King - Maintains an insolent attitude butremains silent.

Ace - Is confident and slightlycontemptuous in his assurance.

Joker - Tries to annoy his interrogatorsthrough pretence or tricks.

This 1-day workshop is an advance-leveltraining that combines various interviewstrategies to develop a structured approach forengaging difficult suspects.

Participants will learn methods to get suspectstalking, obtained buy-in and ultimately securecommitment for a positive outcome. Those whohave been trained in the Wicklander-Zulawski’sfoundational Non-Confrontational Method willbenefit the most.

It is highly recommended for investigators withsome experience interviewing and interrogatingsuspects.

KEY BENEFITS:

• ACQUIRE proven strategies to the interview game plan

• RECOGNISE physical signs of defiance

• OVERCOME different types of denials

• UNCOVER motivation behind difficult subjects

• AVOID difficulty during the interview

• MAINTAIN subject’s and your composure

• MINIMIZE verbal confrontation

• FOCUS on getting a positive outcome

• MANAGE difficult conversation with finesse

BRIEF PROGRAM OUTLINE

Like Poker, interrogation is not a game ofchance but a series of calculated and strategicmoves to ensure the greatest chance ofsuccess.

Your success lies entirely in your own hands. To be a successful interrogator, you need tocarefully assess subject's behaviour, apply thecorrect strategies, anticipate difficulties andovercome resistance.

This is a highly “hands-on” workshop with realcase-studies and videos of actual interrogation.

Topics include:

v CAUSES OF DENIALS: Participants will identify causes of denialsand ways to eliminate them before evensitting down with a subject.

v BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW:Participants will work through a difficultcase while learning how to use principlesand techniques to eliminate the innocentand identify the guilty.

v CASE STUDIES: Participants are given multiple opportunitiesto work through actual case studies, playing the interrogator ‘s role.

v DEALING WITH DIFFICULT SUBJECTS: An exercise is conducted to handle denials, objections, denials and subject’s attempt tocontrol the interview.

v OBTAINING THE ADMISSION: An exercise is conducted to recognize/identify if the subject is attempting to denyand if a follow up question is needed inorder to obtain an admission.

v OVERCOMING RESISTENCE:Matching subject’s profile with mostappropriate theme to overcome resistance.
