This fan increases the quantity of air con- siderably. At the " William A" colliery two new shafts have been sunk from the surface to the Red Ash seam, a depth of 164 feet by William A. Connell Sons and on the west side of the Lackawanna river in Old Forge town- ship, Lackawanna county. The hoisting shaft is 16 ixll. The other shaft which is used for hoist- ing and lowering men and for ventilation is 27xll feet area. A new Guibal fan 17 feet in diameter has been erected on the air shaft. A new breaker has been built and supplied with first-class machinery for cleaning and preparing a large output of coal; the capacity of breaker is about 1,000 tons per day. It was started to prepare and ship coal in the month of MaY,1890. The machinery in and around the breaker is properly fenced or boxed off for the safety of the employes. The old frame tower on eoal shaft has been replaeed with a sub­stantial structure of yellow pine.

The steam plant eonsisting of 18 cylinder, 1 return tubular and 1return poreupine boiler is being replaced with sterling boilers.'rIds work is now under way, four batteries of sterling boilers beingin place.

Babylon Colliery.-A tunnel has been dri\'en from the middle tobottom split of Red Ash vein, near fo-ot of shaft.

The new breaker that \vas being built in 1903 started up work onPebruary 1, Hl04. There is heing built at present a new steam plantat the breaker, Sterling boilers, capacity 1,704 horse power, to re­place the 900 horse power Babeoek and\Vilcox boilers, these to berell1o\'(:d elsewhere.

ELLIOTT, McCLURE AND COMPANY

Install(~d rope haulage in the Clark vein. Enlarging the secondopening wh.ich has resulted in' a great improvement in the ventila­tion. 'rIte op~ration of small pumps and engine in No.1 Dunmorevein by compressed ail'.

A new Jeanesyille compound duplex pump 17x28x16x36 inch, lo­cated in the Clark vein now pumps all the water to the surface.

The cribbing in the IIp-cast has been replaced by 22 feet of con­crete.

They have also erected foul' stutks 4:8 inches by 80 feet, furnishingthem with {.!.'ood drnft for their boilers.

Jermyn No.1 Colliel'y.-The main shaft was sunk from N-o. 2 Dun-more to No.3 Dunmore, a. distance of 55 feet. A "Tail Rope" enginewas instaned outside t-o haul coal up slope to outside fr()m top veinand east middle vein. No.3 or Nickle Plate shaft was recribbed.

Jermyn No.2 Colliery.-A slope was driven from Marcy vein toClark vein, a distance of 300 feet on a 12 degree pitch. A rock planetunnel was driven from Dunmore No. 2 vein to Olark vein, a dis­tance of 328 feet on a pitch of 17 degrees.

DgLAWARE AND HUDSON COMPANY

Greenwood Collier.y.-No. 2 slope in Checker vein extended 430feet for development. New drift to New Oounty vein opened, andsurface railway constructed from mouth of same to head of No.2slope. Bore hole 256 feet deep put down for compressed air.

ELLIOTT. McCLURE AND COMPANY

SibleJ' Mine.-The shaft has been sunk 115 feet from the Olarkvein cutting N·o. 2 and No.3 Dunmore veins and are now at workopening No.3, the No.2 being devel-oped from an inside slope. Ropehaulage has been installed in the bottom split of. the Clark and inNo.2 Dunmore, and are at present installing a rope haulage in theNew County vein. The mountain plane in the Cla.rk vein has beenextended 750 feet. A new stable has been built in the Clark vein.The breaker has been equipped with additional Emory"siate pickers;a new 50 ton Barker track scale has been placed owing to the in­creased capacity of railroad cars.

Beginning January 1, 1907, the Lawrence breaker win beoperated as a washery only, the coal 'being prepared at William Abl't:uker. Insjde.-A new haulage road has been driven 2,500 feetthrough middle split pillars to Babylon mines to minimize trans­portation. The road was continued in the bottom split acr,oss theHab;rlon tract to the westward, where a 300 foot tunnel openS' up'the virgin coal. This haulage road will be eventually connectedwHh No. 10 tunnel at Campbell's Ledge, when it will be a. continuousroad of 16,000 feet in length.

HILLSIDE COAL AND IRON COMPANY

Consolidated Slope.-They are steadily. opening on the bottomRed Ash vein at Consolidated slope, and have also just opened ontIle split of the Cheeker underlying the main Checker vein, aboutsix feet apart. This has been done direct from the Oonsolidatedmain slope.

HUDSON COAL COMPANY

Langcliff CollierJT.-No. 2 slope in Red Ash vein extended 380feet. One 54 inch locomotive type boiler installed.

JERMYN AND COMPANY

Jermyn No.1 Colliery.-Thi:-3 mine went on strike February 13and the strike continued until August. 23. On October 27 a cyclonedestroyed the breaker which is now being rebuilt. During the sus­pension new sills a~d pockets wer,e placed under the bfeaker.

Jermyn No.2 Colliery.-rrhe men at this mine went on strik~

ji"'\'.bt'uary 13 and remained out until November 1, when operationsWf're again resumed. A new rope haulage system was inst,aUed inthe outside slope to the Clark and Marcy veins.

OONDITION OF OOLLIERIES AND IMPROVEMENTS

PmNNSYLVANIA COAL COMPANY

At Central Colliery, an improvement has been made in the matter ofaccess to the ash pit of the boiler house. Previously there has beenbut one end open, the other being walled, and the whole ventilated bya steam jet blowing in a stack. The new arrangement does awaywith that, and the pit is now open from both ends admitting a freepassage of pure air.

An egg shaped concrete water course about a mile long, constructedthrough the workings of both Oentral and Old Forge collieries, gath­ers the water from these workings and delivers it to a very modernand unsurpassed pumping plant at No.2 shaft.

'l.'he No.2 Old Forge shaft has been idle since June and the plantand workings have been completely overhauled. r.rhe shaft is nowconcreted from bed-rock and raised to accommodate a grade, whichpermits the abandonment of the old grade crossing for mine cars onthe main road, the cars now being conducted over a new steel andconcrete bridge. A new steel tower has been erected to replace the oldone, and also a new brick engine house and hoisting engine. At the

I consider the Pennsylvania collieries, Old Forge and Central, torank with the very best in my district. -

DEIJAWARE, LACKAWANNA AND WESTERN RAILROAD COMPANY

The Hallstead Colliery was closed down in Septem'ber, after a con­ference with the Inspector, it being decided to take up the matter ofsome much needed improvements. Mining is suspended, but a forceof men are regularly employed thus far making the changes referredto. The Pyne and Taylor collieries, which were transferred to meAprill, 1908, from the Fourth di~trict, are in good condition. A llewfan shaft is being sunk at the Pyne to supply ventilation to the Dun­more veins, which will later be developed, and a 20 foot fan will beinstalled thereon.

JERMYN AND COMPANY

At Jermyn Collieries a new pump has been installed at No. 2shaft to return the water from the washery, the silt being run intothe old workings. A new wa8hery has been completed near No. 1breaker; here the silt is first deposited in a settling tank, and thewater passes off into the creek, it being first supplied from the Clarkvein in No.3 shaft by the hig pump, which delivers it to the t.op ofthe wllRher.r over one thouRand feet removed from the Abaft.

An 80 horsepower electric hoist was installed at Oorey slope and afireproof engine house built. A fan 15 feet in diameter, driven by a55 horsepower motor, was installed in a fireproof fan house to properlyventilate the workings of the Oorey slope.

Central Colliery.-No. 13 shaft has been abandoned as a hoistingshaft. A motor road was made from No. 13 to Laws shaft, and thecoal is hoisted at Laws shaft. No 13 shaft is only used as a pumpingstation and for lowering and hoisting men.

A new electric pump has been installed in Laws shaft, capable ofhandling 1,000 gallons of water per minute.

DELAWARE, LACKAWANNA AND WESTERN RAILROAD COMPANY

Pyne Colliery.-A second opening and return airway, 7 by 12, wasdriven from the Olark to the No.1 Dunmore vein, pitch 25 degrees,total length 78 feet. A Welch automatic overwind device, or enginestop, was installed on the hoisting engines.

Taylor Colliery.-Concrete breaker and washery completed andput in operation during the month of July.

JERMYN AND COMPANY

J ermyns Oolliery.-A new wash-house was built of brick and con­crete, 80 by 20 feet, to accommodate 200 men and boys, with showerbath and lockers. A supply house was built of brick and concrete,80 by 24 feet. Made slope from outside to Clark vein, to be used assecond opening, also air shaft from Olark vein to Monkey vein. Bal­ance plane in No.2 mine. A new tower was erected at No.3 shaft.

ELIJIOT, 1\fcCLURE AND COMPANY

Sibley Oolliery.-Concrete stables were completed in No.2 Dun­more vein, also one in No.3 Dunmore vein. Two Lehigh Valley doublejigs for the preparation of egg and stove coal were installed in thebreaker. An additional air compressor is being installed. A newcompound duplex ..Teanesville pump, with steam cylinders 22 and 34inches, 16 inch plunger, 36 inch stroke, is being placed in position inthe Dunmore vein. Big vein is being opened by a drift north of shaft.This drift has been driven about 300 feet.

HILLSIDE COAL AND IRON COMPANY

Consolidated Oolliery.-Made a new opening on the North dip forhoisting slope for Red Ash vein. Engines moved from in.side to out­side. It'an and fan-house, car and blacksmith shop, barns, storehouses,locomotive house, foreman's office, emergency hospital, wash-houseand boiler plant, were built near slope. This was done on accountof fire in surface vein under location of old buildings near breaker.

20 by 7 feet and built concrete fan drift connecting with upcast com­partment of No. 4 shaft. The fan is driven by an 18 by 30 inchHamilton Oorliss engine, single. Completed reinforced concrete par­tition wall between the upcast and downcast compartments of No.4shaft, a distance of 680 feet. Commenced to build new wash housenear No.2 shaft to contain shower baths and 200 locke]·s.

Coal Brook Colliery.-Installed two 6.5-ton electric locomotiveswith drum attachment for hauling coal and a 10-foot steel Buffalofan for ventnatin~ No. 6 tunnel.· Built an addition to the boilerhouse 51 by 56 feet. Installed a General Electric 1,000 K. W. gen­erator, driven by a pair of ~m~ines, 24, by 44 by 22 inches. Installeda new en~ille house and a 20 by 24 inch engine for No.1 haulage anda 21-ton locomotive for hauling coal from the mines to the breaker.No. 22 plane was driven 2,000 feet.

Powderly Collierv.-No. 1. Installed a 6-!-ton electric locomotivewith druID. attachment for hauling coal ill:o;;ide. No. 9 plane wasequipped with a 20 H. S. P. electric house. Powderly tunnel drivenfrom the surface to the Clark vein, a distance of 600 feet.

•Termyn Col1iery.-Installed a General Electric 25 K. W. ~enerator,

driven by a 22 by 22 in('h en!!ine, and built a brick addition to thepower-houl'le, 24 by 51. feet. Two 6.5-ton electric locomotives withdrum attachment installed for mine work. Tunnel driven 200 feetfrom surface to Clark vein. Drlvinll: a tunnel from the surface totile Dunmore vein to be 300 feet in length when finished. It is aboutone· third <'ompleted.

Gravity Slope Oolliery.-Completed a breaker, 92 by 11.4 feet witha capacity of 1.500 ton!': ppr day, to l'lnneJ"sede the old V\Thite Oakbreaker. MINE FOHEM:EN'S EXAMINATIONS

The annual examination of applicants for certificates of quali·fication as m,ine foremen and assistant mine foremen was held in theCarbond.ale High School Building, .Tune 23 and 24. The Board of Ex­aminers was composed of P. ~T. Moore, Inspector; Hichard Beers,Superintendent, Carbondale; ,Jo11n F. Boland, Miner, Carbondale, andDavid Evans, Miner, Olyphant. •

Considerable work has been done grading the main haulage roadsin No.2 shaft to eliminate the present grades.

Central Colliery.-For better fire protection a new fire pump was in­stalled outside.

Rebuilt the head frame over Laws shaft.Considerable work has been done fining in the old workings in the

Red Ash veins with culm and broken rock from the breaker.A saw mill, operated by electricity, has been built to cut the props

for the colliery. 'The engine and pump house at No. 13 shaft was rebuilt, making it

fireproof.A rock plane, 7 by 12 feet, on a 20 degree grade, was driven from

Nigger vein to Clark vein, in Laws shaft, a distance of 470 feet.An air shaft, 10 by 14 feet, was sunk from the surface to the Nigger

vein for a second opening and ventilation.A traveling way was driven from surface, striking the crop of the'

Clark vein near Laws shaft. This provides a second opening and agood traveling way from this seam.

.Jermyns Colliery.-Qld revolving screens taken out and new shak­ing' screens 'Put in breaker.

Three pairs of compounded rollers were installed in the breaker.

HILLSIDE OOAL AND IRON COMPANY

Consolidated Colliery.-Oonsiderable work has been done rebuild­ing the washery pockets.

At Conl!lolidated drift an air shaft has been sunk from the surfaceto the Red Ash vein to provide better ventilation and at the same timemakes ~mother second opening to the surface.

A slope has been driven from the surface into the top split of theStark vein at Consolidated drift.

At'the Red Ash slope an additional pump to pump to the surfacehas been installed.

The oM. Brown slope near Consolidated breaker bas been reopenedfor the purpose of taking out the pillars.

shaft to the Clark vein. A new fireproof motor barn has been builtnear the foot of No. 1 shaft. A new and large hospital has alsobeen made on the inside at this place. ~t Coray slope a fireproofmotor barn and a fireproof hospital have been placed in the Clarkvein.

Central Colliery.-Overwinding devices have been placed on theengines at Laws and No. 13 shafts.

Inside: A main haulage·road was made from Old li"orge shaft No.2 workings to Sibley shaft workings, and the coal that is being minedin Sibley shaft is hauled over this road to the foot of Old li"orge No.2'shaft. It is then hoisted to the surface, and from head of the shaftit is pulled by locomotive to Old Ji'orge breaker, where it is prepared.

.Jermyn Colliery.-Ontside: One motor generator was installed,and a. new wash house was huilt at No.2 shaft. Also replaced HO­pOlilld l'ails on empty and loaded hranehes above and helow thehI'eaker with OO-pound rails.

Inside: A slope was driven from No.2 to No.3 Dunmore vein.Opened up No.3 Dunmore vein at No. 3 shaft. Also installed twocoal·cutting machines and an engine at No.3 shaft.
