Dear Parishioners, The mass shooting, the never ending violence in our cities, the rise of vicious attacks on people of color are issues that the Church is called to address. When we say “Respect Life” it means all life, black and brown babies, the healthy and the weak, the poor and those that have a mental illness, for people not only of our own nationality but also the stranger from a far off land. Do we “respect” not only the life of babies, but teenagers who have no parents, young adults who are searching for meaning in all the wrong places, for sin-gle people and the elderly? Do we foster “respect” for people in authority, and for those we don't understand, do we “respect” people of faiths different from our own? Yes, “respect” is the key word! The present situation around the world is depressing which can lead us to turn in on ourselves, or even worse direct our anger and confusion by attacking the “other.” Our better selves know that is not the way of Christ. Please step back and look to the good and holy, please take a positive step forward. “Respect” yourself and others each day by living out the small gestures and kindnesses that make all the difference. Don't follow the crowd, mark out the right path towards reconcilia-tion and peace. Father Mike Meany

Join Our Scripture Study Group This September Our scripture study program is ready to begin the fall program. We will be going over the letters to the Galatians and Romans. Galatians addresses Paul's understanding of Christian freedom and justification by faith. He reprimands the Galatians for deserting the Gospel by seeking justification through circumcision rather than through faith in Christ, who achieved our salvation by his sacrifice on the cross. Romans is the longest of Paul's letters. It addresses the universal reality of sin in the world and the need for salvation in Jesus Christ. It explores both the strength and limits of the law of Moses. Paul examines the new life attained in the Ho-ly Spirit as God's gift and proclaims the mystery of God's plan to save Israel. Romans also highlights the ethical de-mands of the Gospel. This will be a two-part study. Our Fall program will last seven weeks, and the Lent will last seven weeks. Our study will begin on 09/29/19. We meet every week on Sunday mornings from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Our study fee is $10.00. Registration slips can be dropped off at the Parish office. Contact Chester Gilbert at 847-966- 4789 or [email protected] for more information.

Join us for Fall 2019 Alpha!

• How can I make a difference? • There's got to be something more... right? Do you wonder about these things, too?

Each evening includes Dinner, Presentation, and Small Group Discussion Mondays from 6:30-8:15 pm September 9 - December 2 at St. John Brebeuf Parish Ministry Center register at 847-966-8145, or sjbrebeuf.org/alpha

Prayer for Alpha at SJB This week we pray for each member of our church to have the confidence to invite someone to the Alpha Course. Pray for the Lord to prepare the hearts and minds of those that will be invited.

Stewardship “For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members of one another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given us; prophecy, in propor-tion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in gen-erosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness..” Romans 12: 4-8

What are my special gifts?

How can my gifts be used to serve the body, the Church?

JOY IN JESUS The “Joy in Jesus” Sun-day program is open to children ages 3 ½ (by September 1) through

Kindergarten age. Classes are held in the school during the 10:45 Mass.

The program was formed to provide children with a basic foundation for a future understanding of Christian revelations. Emphasis is given to development of self-awareness in the children and their place in the Chris-tian community. The children in the “Joy in Jesus” 2018-2019 program ended their session with a prayer service. The children prepared for this celebration for several weeks by mak-ing a celebration tablecloth and other symbolic items depicting topics discussed throughout the year. Registration will be held on Sunday, September 8th and 15th with classes beginning Sunday, September 22nd. The registration fee for the year is $40.

The Sacrament of Marriage A sign of God’s presence in the world.

A source of grace for the couple.

Among the many blessings that God has showered upon us in Christ is the blessing of marriage, a gift bestowed by the Creator from the creation of the hu-man race. His hand has inscribed the vocation to mar-riage in the very nature of man and woman (see Gn 1:27-28, 2:21-24). From the Pastoral Letter of the USCCB, Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan, 2009

Praise be to Jesus Christ! Now and forever! Since its creation in 1943, the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland and Polonia has been helping the Church in Poland. In addition to that commitment, the League is reaching out to the Polish-American communities across the U.S. where Polonia is present. The League's mission proclaims: “Keeping in mind the future of our Polish-American heritage, we cultivate the gift of unity with the Roman Catholic Church of Poland and we promote a transformed Polonia – informed, united, involved, and active.” Bishop Andrew Wypych, the National Executive Director, encourages you to join the many generous people who support the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland and Polonia during the annual campaign. The collection takes place on a weekend close to August 26, the feast day of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the patroness of the League. We ask for the intercession of Our Lady of Czestochowa and our beloved St. John Paul the Great. May They, bless the work that is done and beseech Our Lord to bless all who support the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland and Polonia. Thank you and Bóg Zapłać! + Andrew P. UNCLE PETE’S MINISTRY Last month Uncle Pete’s Sack Dinner Ministry collected over 500 meals that were delivered to those less fortunate in the Chicagoland area. Some of the locations served include Deborah's Place, Franciscan Shelter, Mother Theresa Sisters of Charity Soup Kitchen, St. Leonard, Marillac Center Food Pantry, Covenant House, St. Stanislaus Kostka Soup Kitchen, St. Sylvester’s Food Pantry, and Grace House. These places in need could use as many as 800 meals each month! You’re involvement would be greatly appreciated … and it’s easy. On August 17th and 18th, at all the weekend Masses, brown bags and sack guidelines will be availa-ble at tables as you exit the church. You simply need to fill the bags and return them to the front of church on the morn-ing of Tuesday, August 27th, between 5:45 AM and 9:00 AM. We need your help - Please consider being a part of this very worthwhile ministry. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Our ministry is looking for volunteers to help distribute bags after the Masses. If you’re available to help for a few minutes each month, please contact Dan Vonder Heide at 773.910.5536. Thank you and God bless.

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM GLADD What a GREAT TIME WE HAD LAST SUNDAY!! God blessed us with a beautiful day, but we were extra blessed when Bishop Mark Bartosic celebrated Mass with Fr. Meany and our associates, Fr. Przemek and Fr. Carlton. Our annual picnic was extra special because of all the work done by so many, those who helped in the kitchen, those who set up on Saturday and Sunday, those who put up and ran games.

Thanks to John Mazur and his crew for setting up, and to Marek Rachelski for the beautiful music.

THANK YOU ALL!!!

This is an amazing ministry that shares faith with the developmentally disabled, and a true family of volunteers. Call Lois Kozeny at 847-966-5338.

In today’s Gospel Jesus said to his disciples: “I

have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it be accomplished! Nasz dar dla Towarzystwa, pomoże cierpiącym w biedzie, pomoże podpalić ziemię Bożą miłością.

Czy Bóg wzywa Cię do przyłączenia się do Towarzystwa św. Wincentego a Paulo? Jeśli znasz rodzinę która po-trzebuje pomocy prosze zadzwoń do naszego Stowarzyszenia St. Vincent de Paul. Razem możemy pomóc cierpiacym i potrzebującym.

SJB NEW HYMNALS THIS FALL Over the last three years a study of our current missal took place and a comparison with other available hymnals was made. We have determined that while the current pew books are adequate, we can do better and spend far less! We can save $50,000 over ten years just by the purchase of a hardbound hymnal! Our current books are reprinted yearly on news-print (low quality) paper, shipped to the parish from Oregon, then are placed into pews by parishioners, recycling the pre-vious year's edition. That is a lot of energy spent yearly (shipping and fuel costs with accompanying carbon emissions, many more trees cut, and the challenges of recycling treated paper). Our newly selected hymnals, RITUAL SONG, 2nd edition, are beautiful, durable, comprehensive in scope, earth-friendly and economical. They are shipped only once and may last 10-15 years. The repertoire of music in this hymnal is equally balanced between contemporary and traditional. Scripture readings for every Sunday will be included, just as we are ac-customed to seeing. You will notice the new beauty of these books right away, and their presence in our church will be distinctive. These hymnals belong to the entire singing assembly! So we invite each of you to purchase a hymnal through envelopes made available in the near future, along with donor bookplates upon which you may take the opportunity to commemorate an important event, celebrate the memory of a departed loved one, or simply honor your family name. The bookplates will be placed on the inside back cover of the hym-nal to be read each time they are opened and used. We are suggesting a $20.00 donation per book to cov-er the cost of the 1000 hymnals we will purchase. We know that you will appreciate the value of this purchase and the attention to our stewardship of your gifts.
