In today’s Gospel, Jesus reveals something quite strange to us. He soberly announces what seems to go against all sound reason and common sense, Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! “What??!! How can we be blessed and rejoice when others reject or think poorly of us? The Greek word for “blessed” is makarios, “the state of one who has become a partaker of God, the satisfaction of experiencing His fullness”—the serenity we experience from being at peace with Him, in contrast to the turmoil, emptiness and isolation we feel through shutting our hearts off from Him and His will. Do we place the esteem of our peers above pleasing God? Where do we find comfort and security? Jesus says we are blessed (filled with God’s grace) when we are rejected and excluded for standing firm in His will. We can only endure what the world fears (rejection, discomfort) when we nurture the life of Christ in us that we received in Baptism. We do this through daily prayer, receiving the Sacraments, the reading of Scripture, repentance and when we humbly accept into our hearts the attitude of our Blessed Mother, who said, “Let it be done to me according to Thy Word.” Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time | February 17, 2019 800 Bello Street, Pismo Beach CA 93449 - 2310 Fr. BLESSED When we think of the word “Bea tude” we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more famil-iar one from Ma hew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, bea tudes occur through-out the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resur-rec on in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteris cs that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteris cs that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In La n, the saints are called the Bea , the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living bea tude! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
