XoS as a Platform

We have spoken about 4 fundamental forces of change. I have shared some high level perspectives regarding the coming transformation of the network edge with Wave-2, my thoughts on how the DC is going to change in unexpected ways and sketched some thoughts on how Extreme will participate, I have also discussed how SDN and the Cloud will impact the industry and some of my thinking on how Extreme will adapt to this new world.

We are focused on open networking for winning in SDN, being a major participant in VmWare environments, offering SPB, differentiated Application visibility and targeting integrations with industry leaders such as Microsoft, Palo Alto, and many more DC and Enterprise 3rd parties. And we will increasingly partner with Lenovo for integrated / differentiated server solutions. Though the future is cloudy I foresee expanding into multiple wireless cloud offering, virtualization our management, transforming EXOS our Linux based OS, into a competitive weapon for the both Cloud providers and for Enterprise hybrid cloud, and targeting cloud partners to add value to our hybrid offerings. In Summary - We are bringing Extreme Leadership products to build the future However as we get from here to there from Software to fixed switching to modular switching to wireless the concrete shorter term roadmap will be shared later by some of my esteemed colleagues.

Goal become an open SDN ecosystem platform leader. Not by providing a closed solution but by providing an open solution that follows standards and can integrate the best software in an evolving industry. Further Partner with the best Virtual Function providers both for Cloud Data Centers and Hybrid Cloud Enterprise data centers. Make this easier and simpler by Evolving EXOS to be more open, leverage our Linux roots and support networking applications including a full SDN controller and connectivity to industry leading controllers.Cloud targeting Tier-2, Tier-3 cloud providers with new capability, from silicon photonics, to high performance switching to VxLan and SPB and a transformation in the capabilities of EXOS,. Cloud we will partner with selective cloud providers and leverage new EXOS capabilities and 3rd parties to provide optimized Hybrid Cloud solution

We are recommending a solution by Extreme Networks who delivers the most educationally focused networking solution in the industry and can offer the school/district the best possible advantages for its infrastructure. We are pleased to offer the proposed solution that will support the schools/districts goals, protect the schools/districts learning environment, all while reducing operational costs. ExtremeXOS was designed from the ground up to meet the needs of large cloud and private data centers, service providers, intelligent, converged enterprise edge networks, and everything in between. It provides the high performance and rich features required by these diverse environments. ExtremeXOS provides interfaces and tools to use the network as a programmable development platform. This allows our customers to maximize network utilization, gain critical insights, and innovate rapidly by integrating the network in unique ways.

ExtremeXOS - Network Operating SystemSecure Network Access through role based policy or Identity ManagementAutomated Native Scripting; SOAP/XML APIsStandards-based SDN Support for OpenFlow, OpenStackResilient Modular architecture, memory protected, self-healing, resilient protocols (EAPS, MLAG, FRR, Graceful Restart, TRILL)

In the past, the Eternal network question is, how do you use this technology in building your network. There was a simple principle to follow - Switch where you can, Route where you have to." With a layer 3 switch you dont compromise performance when routing is required. If you have a small network, and all of your devices will be on the same IP subnet, then use a switch. The routing can be accomplished by using a Layer 3 switch, which has routing in the fast path.

Uptime instead of reboots1) Memory protected processes under real-time scheduling that cannot impact each other nor kernel2) Designed to allow application modules to be upgraded during runtime (apps and drivers)3) Application modules can be added during runtime4) Processes are monitored and can be restarted if necessary5) Hitless failover infrastructure for dual management systems6) DoS Protection for system

We are marching on a path to deliver enhancements to the inherent intelligence that we deliver today. Our delivery today is proven - we have a truly modular OS (unlike Cisco's recent announcement regarding their modular version of IOS), we have native XML within our system and within our management platform and we have security at the heart of the network solutions. We are unique in these three areas, and given that the survey said 75% of prospects are looking for these features, we have a great message to take to our present and future customers.

So who cares ? The quick answer - a lot of Enterprises care these days. A recent Forrester Research survey of 1,130 network-equipment decision makers at midsize and enterprise companies found that close to three-quarters of those polled prefer "smart networks." Specifically, 77% of respondents from large companies (those with 1,000 employees or more) want their network gear to do more than direct traffic, and 65% of IT buyers from midsize companies (those with 100 to 999 employees) prefer intelligent appliances to dumb boxes. That means our solutions are hitting the exact requirements of a significant percentage of our current and future customer base. For many years enterprises have been looking to bring a layer of intelligence into the network so that rather than just move packets around the environment, the network truly becomes involved in the interaction and increases the value of the transport by :

Providing access and entry authentication (802.1x)Ensuring that the end-point is stable, in compliance and does not represent a security risk.Watching for potentially harmful or stability-impacting attacks and challenges on the infrastructure.Smartly configuring the end-point when network changes occur (LLDP) and so on.

So how do you take this message into the next sales/opportunity conversation ? Simple. Ask the prospect what they believe will be required of network environments in 3 to 5 years. You may get a few answers - virtualization of infrastructure, massive scalability, self-management, and so on - but two themes will echo in any answer - enterprises will need intelligence and they will need flexibility within their network solutions. 411/13/2016Jeff Greens Point-of-View [email protected]

Extreme Networks provides customers with tiered software through the sale of optional licenses. This adds another layer of flexibility to our solutions. The value edge switches come with Layer 2 Edge licenses, which support all Layer-2 switching features like the Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching and Spanning Tree protocols, as well as intelligent Layer 2. This license also includes Layer 2 through Layer 4 based Access Control Lists and Quality-of-Service.

Our intelligent edge switches ship with the Edge license included. This gives you most Layer 2 switching functions and some basic Layer 3 routing capabilities, including RIP for IPv4 and IPv6. E-series switches can further be upgraded to our Advanced Edge software license. Advanced Edge features advanced routing protocols such as OSPF, and PIM-Sparse Mode, both of which operate at the edge. The Advanced Edge license also includes Layer 3 redundancy protocols like the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol and Extreme Networks Sparse Mode Extreme Standby Routing Protocol.

Aggregation switches ship with the Advanced Edge software license included and have an optional upgrade to the Core license. The Core license supports advanced protocols and features for both Layer 2 and Layer 3 configurations. These include routing protocols like BGP-4, OSPF, IS/IS, and PIM. This license also gives you full EAPS support, allowing the deployment of multiple EAPS rings within a single switch.

Though chassis management module failover may take seconds to complete, the inclusion of hitless failover support means that protocols like OSPF and BGP are not affected. In addition, the combination of Layer 2 and Layer 3 distributed forwarding and the shortest-path algorithm assures that traffic which does not travel through the master node is not affected by a master switch failover. Finally, scalable, Web-based management is another major enhancement. Compared to the old way of doing things, our solution offers a lot better flexibility and management simplicity.

10.121.1Is It an Application, a Platform, or a Framework?

In my programming experience Ive worked on many platforms and I've used many frameworks. The difference between a framework and a platform is described by the verb i used in the first sentence.

You work on a platform. You use a framework. This is the conceptual difference. The Framework gives you a set of tools to help you write the code faster and better, while the platform gives you the website in a basic form so you can work on it.

In the world of information technology software, we often refer to the tools that we use as applications, platforms, or even frameworks:An application is computer software designed to help a user perform specific tasks.A computing platform includes a hardware architecture and a software framework that allow application software to runfor example, the operating system and programming languages.A software framework helps facilitate software development by providing generic capabilities that can be changed or configured to create a specific software application. When a company like Cisco buys a company like Meraki, one that's already well down the path of becoming a large company on their own, resulting in a pretty high acquisition price, its a sign that the acquirer is just late to the space or tried to compete in the space and failed. In this case it's the second one. Cisco had products in this space that just weren't getting it done. They were losing market share (and talent) to Aruba and the other companies in the space.

Extreme Networks NetSights rich set of integrated management capabilities provides centralized visibility and highly efficient anytime, anywhere control of enterprise wired and wireless network resources. NetSight is distinguished by web-based OneViewTM, the unified control interface. Graphical and exceptionally easy-to-use, OneViewTM simplifies troubleshooting, help desk support tasks, problem solving and reporting. Its Identity and Access interface provides specialized visibility and control for the exploding number of managed and unmanaged devices connecting to todays networks.

NetSight is distinctive for granularity that reaches beyond ports, VLANs and SSIDs down to individual users, applications, and protocols. NetSight increases efficiency, enabling IT staff to avoid time-consuming manual device-by-device configuration tasks. NetSight fills the functionality gap between traditional element managers that offer limited vendor-specific device control, and expensive, complex enterprise management applications.

ASM executes policy-based rules, and when triggered, maps IP addresses to ports and takes assigned actions. The range of possible response actions is broad and configurable, including quarantining the user, disconnecting a wired or wireless client, or rate-limiting the traffic flow. Taking the action does not disrupt other users.Network Access Control (NAC) management combines with Extreme Networks NAC appliances or virtual appliances for a complete net-work access control solution, ensuring that only the right users have the right access to the right information from the right place at the right time. NAC management software provides secure, policy-based NAC management. From one, centralized location IT staff can configure and control the NAC solution, simplifying deployment and on-going administration. The Extreme Networks NAC IP-to-ID Mapping capability binds together the username, IP address and MAC address, and physical port of each endpoint. NetSight reports this important information for audit or forensics analysis.Combined with policy management functions and IPS, ASM provides sophisticated identification and management of threats and vulnerabilities. For example, when notified by the IPS, ASM can determine the exact source location of a threat, determine a response based on the security policy, and trigger the configured action on the network switch, access point or wireless controller. Purview provides IT visibility and control of applications resident in all parts of the network, from the wired or wireless edge all the way to the core and datacenter. This massively scalable solution works in mobile, public cloud and traditional private network environments.

Let me share some Extreme innovation in Action. Extreme Cloud from kickoff to FCS in 8 months. Best in class security. Best in class application visibility and throughput. Policy enforcement. The cleanest and simplest user interface out there. New enhanced analytics. We are board members of OpenSwitch, an opensource NOS but we have innovated with Ubuntu Linux, Snappy, BGP, Cloud - & more

Solution design for private cloud with EXOS21.1 & EXTR CONNECT 7.0 for an SDN friendly auto provisioning and orchestration with visibility and analyticsand one of my favorites an On Prem and Cloud capable wave-2 AP with integrated video camera for supplemental security, classroom content recording, saving Cat5 pulls

Coming . . EZ-Fabric extending reliability, simplicity of configuration and resilience from the Private DC across the campus. FB for the Enterprise !We are putting finishing touches on a PCI and HIPAA compliance engine inspired by the needs of some of our top Healthcare customers I entitled this slide Network Protocol Services to make a point. Be it EXOS or EOS, an OS is actually something like Linux, or VxWorks or QNX or Android. In spite of industry vernacular such as a network OS or NOS. The point I want to make here is ONE we will have more Network OS choices this year, BUT we are headed in a direction of having one advance, highly differentiated unified set of core OS services.

Today we ship 7 different operating systems not 2; and this doesnt include variations. We also have to provide security patches for all of these, and maintain PCI compliance. We need synergy and efficiency. Directionally, where we want to head is simple. First, before anything else, we want to move important EOS & CLI capabilities into EXOS, as we have done with 16.1, 21.1, EXOS Python utilities, etc.Second, we want to move to a more modular and modern Linux operating system, with our direction being Ubuntu version of Linux 4.4, with native OS ISSU and with Snappy container support.Third we want our wireless controller, Extreme management, etc. to move to this same common framework. Fourth any other personality, we want to leverage the same framework. In the end we will see manifold benefits: the industrys best infrastructure security, the ability to have a common framework across our products for simplifying the management, configuration, orchestration and deployment of new software and future network applications. Finally, Ubuntu has 67% market share in cloud infrastructure. Snappy makes it possible for ANY ecosystem partner to work directly with us and run their network applications on our infrastructure INCLUDING a built in public or private cloud based Application Services Catalog. This infrastructure delivers the basis for becoming a true Software Driven Networking company and no other company will be able to deliver this vision for many years to come ! ! ! That is innovation and that is delivering solutions for customer pain points. 9Jeff Greens Point-of-View [email protected]
