Secure  Stakeholder and Leadership Buy-In

When it comes to securing leadership buy-in, the most important this to do is "show them the evidence! Our Fall T.I.P.S. (Tailoring Interventions for

Patient Safety) has effectively reduced falls in a randomized controlled trial. A successful fall prevention program reduces preventable harm and costs. Present the evidence at leadership meetings, from the administrative to the

unit-based practice committee level, to obtain buy-in across the range of stakeholders, "says Megan Duckworth, Research Assistant II, Brigham &

Women’s Hospital

Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement Checklist

Collect the evidence

Use data to create a sense of urgency

Assess your organization's capacity for change

Cultivate awareness via community meetings, emails, video, social media, etc.

Ask yourself how the FPP aligns with other institutional values and commitments

Conduct costs/benefits analysis for each stakeholder

Did you know that, on average......

7K to 1 Million People in the United States fall in the hospital per year*

Fall prevention is a process that cuts across a myriad of different areas of hospital operations and, as a result, requires input and buy-in from all of

theses teams. In the words of Barbara King, Assistant Professor, University of Wisconsin- Madison, "fall prevention and management in hospital settings

is complex. What we know if effective in community settings does not translate to hospitals. Due to complexity of why patients fall, a

multidisciplinary approach should be employed. Fall prevention really needs to be unit and patient centered. Therefore, each hospital unit should conduct a needs assessment to determine for their unit which disciplines are key to

include in their fall prevention committee."

Build a Multidisciplinary Fall Prevention Committee

Identify and recruit cross-functional team members

Develop and communicate a clear vision and scope for what this team will be responsible for

Make sure that the team has access to the necessary tools and structures to allow it to succeed

Fall Prevention Committee Checklist

Make sure the team meets regularly, often enough to make progress, at a confirmed time and place

Develop a timetable for specific team tasks to be completed and set up a process for documenting progress

Ground rules or guidelines for how to manage meeting time and for how to communicate, both internally and externally.
