CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Nathan Love wins Junior Philharmonic Concerto Competition Nathan Love, a Crawford County high school junior and member of the Erie Junior Philharmonic, is the winner of the 2015 Junior Philharmonic Concerto Competition. In addition to a $300 prize, which is sponsored by the Erie Philharmonic’s maestro, Daniel Meyer, right, Nathan, a clarinetist, performed as the soloist at the Erie Junior Phil’s Spring Concert in April, and had his name engraved on the competition winner’s plaque. At the concert, Nathan played the first movement of Concerto No. 1, Opus 73 by Carl Maria Von Weber. This year, a team of four students and one teacher attended the competition, which was held in April at Seton Catholic School. In Challenge 24, a student is given four digits from 1 to 9. He or she can use any math operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division) to equal 24. The answer always has to be 24. Luke Markiewicz, a St. Luke School fifth-grader, took second place in the tournament overall in the fifth-grade division. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Upper Room celebrates 20th anniversary The Upper Room of Erie Inc. recently marked 20 years as Erie’s only daytime homeless shelter. Anna Salvia and Sal DiFabrizio were honored with the Upper Room Founder’s Award during the dinner and program held on the anniversary of the Upper Room’s opening date, March 6, 1995. They continue to volunteer at the shelter several hours each week. Boy Scouts serve up spaghetti dinner in Meadville Meadville Boy Scout Troop 244 began hosting an annual spaghetti dinner in 1964. This year it was held in April at First Presbyterian Church in Meadville, guest-hosted with Troop 209. The boys and their leaders served more than 400 meals to their families, friends and neighbors. Among their guests were the 2015 Miss Crawford County Brianna Marie Layman and Miss Crawford County Outstanding Teen Paige Coon.
