BEING SLIM

All these days you have spent listening to the fact that you

are overweight. So why not give your body a chance to be

slim? At least give being slim an opportunity to impress you

once. Who knows you might just build a liaison with it. Do

not get confused by my statements, I was just trying to be a

little witty. Alright if my wit does not work, I hope that my

golden rules will. So here they go…

Rule 1

I have noticed that people who are overweight have this strange tendency of trying

to portray that they cannot eat much. I would like to say that this would not make

you look slim, you would look bulky anyway. So better realise that if you are

overweight then you are definitely eating more than the required amount (unless

you are suffering from thyroid and such diseases). The body uses food as fuel and

the extra food is stored as fat. So to reduce weight you need to eat less than the

required amount.

Rule 2

Patience is a virtue that human beings do not posses. If you have worked hard for

two years to put on so much then you cannot expect to lose the excess in two

weeks. Remember that even if you go on crash diets, they won't work. The initial

results of crash diets are just illusions. In the long term, they are counter-

productive. The trick is to be under a sensible and nutritious diet regime.

Rule 3

The belief that potatoes, pasta, bread and other carbohydrates are always fattening

is not but a myth. Rather they can actually be beneficial when trying to lose

weight. The way you cook them and what you put on them is important. Of course

you cannot expect mashed potatoes with full fat cream and mayonnaise to be

healthy. If you have oats in the similar manner then that will also add to your

9

cellulite content. But if you have plain boiled potatoes with other boiled vegetables

then you would feel less hungry as potato takes time to digest. I guess now I sound

like a real dietician. Let me go to the next rule.

Rule 4

Sloth is a sin that we commit every day I am sure. So stop being lazy and relying

only on a diet regime. It is extremely important to workout. Regular exercise is

prescribed to slim people as well as it takes care of your overall constitution. For

those who are overweight brisk walking and spot jogging can also be extremely

fruitful. But obviously I do not mean that working out for two hours one day and

hogging the rest of the days of the week would help. The situation should rather be

vice versa.

Rule 5

Learn to abstain from temptation. Temptation is not just a devil in disguise but is

the devil in full form. Once you overcome this enormous hurdle, you can be

assured that you would reduce weight consistently.

Rule 6

Finally let me give a tricky idea. This strategy might work for those who love to

shop and have a love for fashion and style. Buy a nice branded pair of jeans with a

waist size small than your by at least three inches. Trust me if you harbour a love

for all these, then that pair of jeans will lead you to your destination.

Preventing eye strain

Most of us are aware of the kind of problems that excessive TV watching can

cause for the eyes. Moderation is one of the solutions but this is not a time for

moderation. What with the World Cup cricket on in South Africa and football

seeing a few major mishaps already, one cannot help but be glued to the television

set for hours, that too late into the night as far as our country is concerned. Eyes

can become tired, blurred, sore or dry, the conditioned worsened at times by severe

headaches. Same is with the growing concern about children watching TV, video

and mobile games and late night study patterns.

So, when you cannot avoid a thing altogether, just take a few simple precautions to

keep the worst at bay.

Take Breaks - The best way to prevent eye-strain is to not use them less. Shift

your focus from near to far on a frequent basis from up close to at least 20 feet

away. You can also try to blink often.

Reduce Glare - Reducing glare of the TV screen will naturally reduce the strain

on your eyes. Make sure your Television screen it is at a 90-degree angle from any

direct light source so that it does not reflect the light. Try switching your monitor

or TV to a flat screen technology. They are not as reflective.

Adjust Contrast - Adjust the contrast setting on monitors and screens to the best

effect. But too much contrast with the surrounding area will cause strain through

your peripheral vision. The overall lighting levels should be kept at a moderate

level.

Colour Regulation - Adjust the colour setting on monitors and screens. Some

technologies even allow adjustment of the colour temperature.

Eye Exercises - Eye-strain is actually the strain of the muscles controlling the

11

eyes. Strengthening these muscles with a series of eye exercises will go a long way

in preventing it.

Clinical consultation - Please remember to visit an ophthalmologist if your eye

problem continues for some time. You may be in need of medication or treatment.

SAILING THROUGH AN INTERVIEW

At a job interview, the interviewer meets with the candidate to assess their

capabilities, skills and level of experience. On the other hand, during the personal

interview at educational Institutes, candidates are evaluated on the basis on their

levels of confidence, ability to act under pressure and their understanding of the

subject that they are applying for.Interview can range from specific questions

about the job to broad discussions on life. Just try to remember that you have been

called for the process simply because you have proved your capabilities and the

people on the other side really think that you have the required potential. So turn

the opportunity into an advantage by presenting your best self. This no doubt will

be enough to impress the group that at that moment may only seem to be intent on

grilling you.

§ Since any personal interview, whether it is for a job or admission to an institute is

a formal affair, it is advisable to be well dressed, preferably in formals.

§ It is best to arrive a little early and take some time to settle down and collect your

thoughts.

§ Bring several copies of your resume, writing material, references etc. and

anything that will make you feel comfortable and prepared.

12

§ Knock before entering the interviewer's cabin and ask for permission to enter.

Generally one must wait to be asked to sit instead of going straight ahead and

sitting.

§ Do your homework. It shows forethought if you know some specifics about the

programme if you are applying for an institute. Review your application; the

interviewer is likely to ask specific questions about it.

Be ready to provide examples and specifics and to elaborate on information on

your resume and application. If it is a job interview, know about the company and

its current affairs, its major customers and competitors. Most of this information is

available on the company's website, annual report or other company literature.

§ Always listen carefully before answering so that you do not falter for words. Do

not speak more than it is required and always pause in between if the interviewer

wants to make a point.

§ Do not try to put on. The interviewers will be able to see your masks through.

§ Watch Your Non-Verbal communication and maintain an open body posture. In

fact, a little nervousness is a good sign - it shows that you are taking the interview

seriously.

§ Follow the interviewer's lead. Be prepared for personal questions. Emphasize the

positive. Be frank and honest.

§ Emphasize what you can do for the organization. This means emphasizing your

transferable skills. However, be careful not to be critical about a previous

employer.

§ Be Careful with the closing. End quickly and courteously without prolonging the

process unduly. Remember to thank your interviewers at the end of the discussion.

THESE WORDS CERTAINLY ENCOURAGING US TO DO SOMETHING.

Most of the people may be knowing…….

When I asked god for strength

He gave difficult to face.

When I asked god for brain & brown

He gave me puzzles in life to solve.

When I asked god for happiness

He showed me some unhappy people.

When I asked god for wealth

He showed me how to work hard.

When I asked god for favors

He showed me how to help others.

God gave me nothing I wanted

He everything I needed.

“It is my duty”

I walk through those doors with pride, whose life will I save tonight?

Some one is waiting for me, some is alive today because of my duty, sometimes

we cry because we can’t save them all, God sometimes won’t let us interfere when

he calls,

A boy’s first breath when he looks at me,

the joy of my first delivery.

16

The tear I wipe a way with my own hands,

Thelife ending of a gentle old man.

The night seems so dark and the morning so bright.

Being a nurse you see life in different light.

Who will I save tonight?

Who will hold my hand during their last breath with no fright?

Who will enter this world on mu shift?

How many mothers will greet their babies with a kiss?

I don’t know who these special people are, but I will meet them will every call.

I will hold them tight and help the pain,

I will hold them up when they feel faint,

I will be strong when I am needed,

That is my job, I am a nurse …………….. That is my duty.
