Dear Parent/Carers,
As winter fast approaches it is lovely to see the sun continuing to shine down on us. This week we have started a ‘rule a week’ to remind children of their obligations as students of Wallerawang Public School. The rules are colour coded, on A4 sheets of paper with a picture that links to the rule. Miss Reid took on the project of making these look visually appealing and she is thanked for the great job she has done in re-vamping Wallerawang Public School Rules. This week’s rule is the blue rule and it states: I will follow the directions of teaching and school staff. Each class has a set displayed in their classrooms, in the play-ground and outside the canteen. I ask you to reinforce with your children at home the importance of the ‘blue’ rule. Thank you to all those families who supported our planting session after assembly on Friday. It is great to see the fantastic support around this exciting initiative. Many thanks to Sharon Rushworth and Nicole Woolsey for allowing this to happen. Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with one of our dads, Andrew ‘Red’ Thomp-son. As many of you may know, Andrew is a chef and is passionate about his trade. He came to me with a proposal about setting up our own Wallerawang Public School restaurant which will involves children cooking, serving, ushering, entertaining etc... and inviting families in to be catered for over several nights. This is currently in the planning stages but what we require to allow this to happen is sponsorship and this will become a major fundraiser for our school. We are looking at holding this at the beginning of term 4 as the weather gets warmer. Donations of food items from veg-etable gardens, meat, bread etc. as the time approaches will be very much appreci-ated as the menu is confirmed we will have a clearer idea of our requirements. A starting point will be getting a set of aprons, please let me know if you are aware of any organisation or individual who may be able to assist with this. I am very excited by this idea as something new for our school and district. As with all things we can’t work alone so any ideas will be valued. It is wonderful to hear the positive feedback and great sportsmanship from our stu-dents who represent in Western Region teams. Ben Murray has just represented at this level in Basketball and his never give up attitude and enduring smile in all situa-tions has been positively commented up. Congratulations Ben and thank you for be-ing a great ambassador for our school, district and region.
Girl’s Hockey It was a pleasure to be in attendance last Thursday at the girl’s hockey match against Cooerwull. They came up against a very expe-rienced and skilled team. With the assistance of Mel Quinn, the girls kept their positions well and improved as the game progressed. Mrs Quinn and Miss Gurney are thanked for their support of the girl’s hockey team and parents for your encouragement. School Cross Country Last Friday thank you to the organisation of Mrs Nancarrow and Ms Graham our school cross country was held. The children walked the track prior to the event, parents and visi-tors were also invited to walk the track with the children. Parents and older siblings also assisted with recording children placed in the top six in age groups. The top 4 children were presented with ribbons and certificates, notes will follow for those children eligible to run at district level. This will be held on Friday the 25th of May at Lake Wallace. PSSA Touch Football On Friday afternoon the boy’s and girl’s district touch football trials were held at Watsford Oval in Lithgow. Congratulations to Dylan Miles, Dylan Williams, Pacey Stockton, Jarryd Clark, Thomas Fraser, Shaqkyra Quinn, Madi Lampton, Erin Rainsford, Erin Luchetti and Holly Beecroft on their selection in the district squad. Athletics Carnival Completion Yesterday we were able to hold the final stages of our Athletics carnival, thanks to the organi-sation of Mr Campling and Ms Foster. Children who were not competing participated in a range of activities including tabloid sports. The district carnival will be held sometime in term 3. Just in time to feel the full force of win-ter in Lithgow. Congratulations to all students for their participation and the parents for their assistance.
Mother’s Day Stall The Mother’s Day stall will be held today and tomorrow. Thank you to Kelly Cafe and Renee Edwards for their organisation around this. The children enjoy purchasing their own little gifts to present to mum on Mother’s Day. I wish all our mums a HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! School Photographs Today school photographs were held in our picturesque school setting. Thank you to Mrs Brown for her organisation around this. Boy’s Hockey Tomorrow the boy’s hockey team will play against Cooerwull and are wished the best of luck. Thank you to Miss Reid and Miss Lang for training the team. Practicum Student Next Monday Miss Kimberley Platts will join 2P as a prac student from Charles Sturt Universi-ty. NAPLAN NAPLAN for years 3 & 5 will be undertaken Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. With a catch up day for children who have been ab-sent on Friday. Rugby League Clinic K-2 children will undertake a Rugby League clinic on Tuesday 15th May. Community Spirit Once again the strength of small communities was evident at a Fundraiser at Portland Golf Club on Saturday night for Graham Higlett. Joe Smith and Col Steele once again demon-strated their ability to bring people together to raise funds when it is most needed. I am told that over twenty thousand dollars was raised. What an outstanding effort, thanks to the gen-erosity of local people.

School Assembly Parents and carers are invited to attend this Friday’s assembly at 9:10am. Award recipients for the Alan Beecroft Sports Scholarships will be presented.
Live Life Well - Be healthy – be active
Children and adults need physical activity every day. Activity helps build better bones, muscles, joints and helps maintain a healthy weight. Physical activity can also reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some can-cers. Get active anyway you can - walking, rid-ing, swimming, and playing active games such as Duck, Duck, Goose or Bull Rush.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
This year we are participating in the NSW
Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC). PRC is a
NSW Government initiative. Children are en-
couraged to meet the challenge of reading 30
books for K-2 or 20 books for children years 3-6
during the months from February to August.
Children in Kinder , Year 1 & 2 are reading books from the recommended list during our Library lessons. Stage 2 are choosing to independently keep a list of books they read and Stage 3 are keeping a reading log during class time where every child is rising to the challenge to read their choice of 20 books.
Children who complete this challenge receive a certificate at the end of the year. It is very en-couraging to see children enthusiastically read-ing a variety of books to build up their list.
Any questions see Beverley Nancarrow or you may like to explore the PRC site at https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Donation of “How Your Body Works” Collection
I would like to acknowledge the very generous donation to our school of a complete “How Your Body Works” collection, by Bez and Trevor Wehrstedt of Lithgow. This collection fits together to form a life-size human skeleton with muscles and all major internal organs. The separate parts of this model and the related information booklets were collected over many months and form an excellent educational re-source.
The model will be assembled and used during Term 3 in Lifeskills Growth and Development lessons.
A sincere thanks is extended to Mr and Mrs Wehrstedt for their thoughtful donation and look forward to inviting them back to the school to see their collection fully assembled.

News From KW
KW have been working hard on writing a re-
count of their weekend each Monday morning.
Students share what they did verbally with
each other. One student’s recount is used to
model how a recount is constructed. Students
then write their own weekend recount. With
support from the class teacher and Learning
Support Officer students use a word card and a
dictionary and attempt to write unknown
words and use correct punctuation and gram-
mar. Below are edited recounts of the weekend
stories.
