Alcatel is at the peak of the DSL deployment learning curve.
The result? Our fifth generation ASAM platform. The Alcatel
7301 ASAM extends bandwidth capacity to deliver video
streaming, broadcast video, video on demand, and gaming.
It also satisfies the market demand for carrier-grade business
access and reduces operational expenditures by improving the
economies of scale. Upgrading from the installed base of existing
Alcatel 7300 ASAMs can be achieved with minimal impact,
renewing the value of the platform for future service deployment.

Alcatel has the largest installed base of DSL
access multiplexers (DSLAMs) in the world,
with more than 25 million DSL lines shipped.
According to Dell’Oro, this is almost four times
as many as our nearest competitor. The Alcatel
7301 ASAM continues to enable economical
mass-deployment of cutting-edge broadband
access services. The Alcatel 7301 ASAM uses
DSL technology to deliver high-bandwidth access
and new revenue-generating broadband services
over existing telephone wiring and/or fiber
terminations. It also will enable future combined
deployment of copper and fiber (PON) access
on the same platform.

THE FIFTH GENERATION ALCATELASAM: WHAT THE MARKET WANTS

Service penetrations of 30 percent and more are
driving the need for a new way of deploying DSL.
The answer to this need is higher capacity
DSLAMs and higher bandwidth aggregation.
High-speed Internet (HSI) access continues to
be the foundation of the broadband network
business case. The advantages made to the
Alcatel 7301 ASAM are designed to further
improve the business case in view of increasing
DSL household penetration and usage beyond
the PC-owning households.
In addition, service providers can start to
differentiate their services to retain and attract
new customers. This can be done if a healthy
HSI network already exists. In addition, service
providers need to have a broadband platform
enabling them to offer a range of compelling
services. These new services in the multimedia
or entertainment space will lead to even higher
first/second mile bandwidth needs, increasing
the challenges for a healthy operator.
The Alcatel 7301 ASAM provides economies
of scale by increasing the ASAM density and
bandwidth capacity in a cost-effective way.
The core of the Alcatel 7301 ASAM is based
on a future-proof bandwidth engine, capable of
processing a huge amount of traffic, including
data, voice, video, and business-corporate traffic.
The Alcatel 7301 ASAM offers protection for
service provider investment with a high capacity
architecture supporting over 10,000 users on a
170 Gb/s back plane with switching capacity of
over 5 Gb/s. In addition, each slot has access to
a total bus capacity of up to 1.4 Gb/s.
It also supports multistage subtending and
management for up to 2,000,000 users and
4,000 nodes for a truly scalable network.
The Alcatel 7301 ASAM is the answer for broad-
band copper-based deployment, offering multiple
classes of DSL service (ADSL and SHDSL, with
VDSL, READSL2, ADSL2 and ADSL2plus coming
soon) with ATM and IP QoS capabilities. All of
this is combined with the robustness of the Alcatel
7300 platform so widely deployed across the world.
A FUTURE-PROOF BANDWIDTH ENGINE

COST-EFFECTIVEGROOMINGReaching Further with Maximum Geographic CoverageTo increase market reach, service providers
are looking to extend DSL network coverage
to reach all potential DSL subscribers in low
penetration areas. The Alcatel 7301 ASAM can
be configured in a network as a host, supporting
multiple remote DSLAMs using the optical or
electrical subtending interfaces. Service providers
have an economical solution for maximum
coverage in remote areas in combination with
the ability to deliver a maximum amount of
bandwidth, enabling a broader service offering
to a wider public.
The Alcatel 7301 ASAM is highly scalable, allow-
ing service providers to reach more potential
DSL customers for small to large system deploy-
ments. The capacity of small systems can be
extended easily to meet the growing demand.
The centralized hub architecture of the Alcatel
7301 ASAM lowers the “second mile” costs both
in terms of capital expenditures (CAPEX) and
operating expenditures (OPEX). The Alcatel
7301 ASAM offers DSL-centric grooming, with
lower port costs. Early grooming of xDSL-centric
traffic creates OPEX savings because expensive
transport links are better dimensioned, and there
is no need for all xDSL-centric traffic to be ter-
minated at a central switch point. Owing to the
nationwide coverage of DSLAMs, the Alcatel 7301
ASAM can aggregate DSL-centric traffic, more
effectively optimizing the transport capacity.
The Alcatel 7301 ASAM supports a wide variety
of interfaces, such as OC-12/STM-4, OC-3/STM-1,
4 x STM-1, T3/E3, T1/E1 and Ethernet. This
offers service providers the flexibility to choose
from many options for edge and backbone
networks.
Seamless Interconnection with EMAN NetworksThere is an emerging trend to use Ethernet
metropolitan area networks (EMANs) for DSL
aggregation. Since current deployments are
largely ATM-based, the Alcatel 7301 ASAM
provides efficient STM-1 and STM-4 interfaces.

Nevertheless, and in view of the EMAN trend,
it will also provide a feature-rich optical GigE
interface allowing operators who choose
Ethernet aggregation to use the Alcatel 7301
ASAM in the most optimum way.
The GigE interface is configured with standard
virtual LAN (VLAN) functions and is capable
of forwarding traffic via cross-connect mode
or bridging mode. To ensure a robust and safe
implementation of Ethernet aggregation with the
GigE interface, the Alcatel 7301 ASAM controls
the uniqueness of the medium access control
(MAC) address, blocks the broadcast storms
of the Ethernet layer and prevents user-to-user
communication. These features are particularly
important for the VLAN bridging/VLAN home
bridging modes.

In cross-connect modes, permanent virtual
connections (PVCs) are uniquely linked to one
single VLAN, and the security of the information
is ensured. The resulting quality of service (QoS)
combines the best from both the DSL/ATM and
Ethernet worlds.
It is important to add that the implementation
of the GigE interface allows service providers
to work simultaneously with ATM and EMAN
aggregation networks. In this way migration
of networks and traffic from one technology to
another is flexible. This is specifically valuable to
tune migration to EMAN aggregation to availability
of features required for end-user services. It also
allows service providers to focus on the
deployment of EMAN networks toward the
traffic generated by new services, leaving
the HSI traffic and operations untouched.
New Services ThroughCentralized IntelligenceThe hub architecture of the Alcatel 7301 ASAM
allows service providers to introduce video
streaming, portal services and services from
content delivery networks (CDNs) in a cost-
effective way. Large ASAM configurations allow
for local content insertion, large-scale packet
insertion and portal services.
One example is the IP Services Module (ISM),
which expands the power of the Alcatel 7301
ASAM to offer IP and broadband remote access
server (BRAS) functions, and features such as
IP multicast, DSL aggregation, and local Ethernet
connectivity in the access network. The ISM is
a two-slot line termination card that slides into
the front of the Alcatel 7301 ASAM.

ADVANCED BUSINESS ACCESS FEATURESDSLAMs have tremendous global coverage,
which makes expansion of services to the
business market a very attractive and lucrative
proposition. The Alcatel 7301 ASAM is designed
to serve up to 10,000 users. Combining business
and residential customers strengthens the overall
business case. For example, with 2,000 business
customers and 8,000 residential customers per
ASAM, the total monthly revenue potential is
maximized. These 2,000 business access cus-
tomers can generate the same or more revenue
than the 8,000 residential customers. In other
words, 20 percent of an ASAM’s customer base
can equal 50 percent (or more) of its revenue
potential while using just 10 percent of the
ASAM’s available bandwidth.
The total revenue potential for business access
on a single Alcatel 7301 ASAM is several hundred
thousand Euros. An example of the ARPUs is
shown in Table 1.

different from residential customers, including:

The Alcatel 7301 ASAM platform has been
designed to cover the needs of the small office
home office (SOHO) and small to medium enter-
prises (SMEs), as well as the requirements of
the corporate market. The increased capacity
(bandwidth as well as the number of users) of
the Alcatel 7301 ASAM makes virtually unlimited
business access deployment feasible. Differen-
tiating service level agreements can be offered
via the VP shaping function and the multi-QoS
support, which ensure that the proper bandwidth
is provided to your customers and that no limits
are exceeded. The GigE/STM-1 or STM-4 termi-
nation makes it possible to connect corporate
customers, reusing first mile DSL investments
for higher bandwidth business customers.
The Alcatel 7301 ASAM provides an evolutionary
path to a next-generation voice and data network.
It supports legacy applications while enabling a
gradual transition from circuit- to packet-based
networks.
Today we provide access to traditional voice
switches. The Alcatel 7301 ASAM also enables
voice and data on a single DSL connection through
integrated voice over DSL (VoDSL) cards, or a
centralized voice gateway. This enables a direct
V5.2/TR-303/TR-008 interface accessing voice
switches. In the future, the voice traffic will be
open to a next generation switching platform
(H.248/Megaco).

In order to maintain and expand their customer
base and increase revenues, service providers
can take advantage of the installed DSL base
to offer broadband services such as streaming
video, VoD, PC TV, and other value-added serv-
ices. The total revenue potential for multimedia
services on a single Alcatel 7301 ASAM is several
hundred thousand Euros. An example of the
ARPU is shown in Table 2.
Alcatel has created an end-to-end standards-based
solution for video services, such as personal video,
broadcast TV, VoD, and e-commerce. The Alcatel
7301 ASAM is ready for video applications on
various end-user platforms, such as personal
computers and televisions. It has been deployed
in various places to provide advanced VoD
services, but can also be used for cost-optimized
video broadcast.

MULTIMEDIA READY
The built-in multicasting functionality eliminates
replicated traffic in the network, significantly
reducing transport costs. Services can be delivered
closer to the end users with optimal network
performance ensured, and users can selectively
join or leave real-time audio or video multicasts.
The backplane architecture is specifically designed
to offer broadcast services. The broadcast video
bus of 622 Mb/s can simultaneously deliver up
to 250 video channels to 10,000 users. In addition,
IGMP messages are interpreted locally on the
network processor to reduce latency and
increase efficiency. The unique multicasting
policy enforcement feature creates an additional
level of security: it makes sure that multicast
streams are mapped on a per port basis with the
subscriber, omitting channel fraud. The IGMP
channel management is already integrated in the
element management system of the Alcatel 5523
AWS, making mass deployment of multimedia
services possible today.

LOW IMPACT, HIGH VALUE UPGRADEThe Upgrade PropositionWith the largest installed base of DSLAMs in the
world, Alcatel designed the Alcatel 7301 ASAM
to provide seamless upgrades to existing systems.
Service providers can mix the Alcatel 7301 ASAM
shelves with installed shelves like the 1000 ASAM
(subtended) or Alcatel 7300 ASAM (upgraded or
subtended). This creates a single system that
delivers enhanced functionality and ensures
backward compatibility while preserving past
investments. Typical upgrades with the Alcatel
7301 ASAM cost only a fraction of the cost of a
conventional DSLAM, adding much more value
to the Alcatel 7301 ASAM itself, while allowing
efficient use of the installed base. With respect
to the broader revenue potential, the pay-back
time of an Alcatel 7301 ASAM upgrade is
typically less than one year.
Further, the migration to the Alcatel 7301 ASAM
is based on a unique procedure: the replacement
of the network processor board and the extender
chain. Existing backplanes are re-used and latent
data busses are enabled. This is done via an
offline migration procedure, reducing the service
outage to a minimum. Beyond hardware
interconnectivity and software consistency, the
easy migration from previous releases to new
releases is enabled through the use of the Alcatel
5620 Network Manager (NM) and the Alcatel
5523 AWS (in the ETSI market) or Alcatel 5526
AMS (in the ANSI market), simplifying the
integration of the Alcatel 7301 ASAM into the
existing network.

FEATURE OVERVIEWThe Alcatel 7301 ASAM features a wide variety
of interfaces. They include DSL interfaces
(asymmetric DSL (ADSL), G.lite, G.shdsl, VDSL,
READSL2, ADSL2 and ADSL2plus coming soon),
network interfaces (DS3, OC-3, STM-1, STM-4,
4x STM-1, and Gigabit Ethernet), and subtending
interfaces (DS1/E1 inverse multiplexing over
ATM (IMA), DS3/E3 and OC-3/STM-1).
This highly deployable platform offers up to
2,304 lines per rack (splitters included). The
Alcatel 7301 ASAM scales to 10,000 lines per
network interface and supports up to 40,000
connections. It features the lowest power
consumption levels on the market, at just
.96 Watts per ADSL line.
The advanced features of the Alcatel 7301 ASAM
include support of virtual circuit (VC) aggregation,
switched virtual circuits (SVCs), IP multicast,
virtual private networks (VPNs), multiprotocol
label switching (MPLS), and multiple levels of
ATM QoS.
The Alcatel 7301 ASAM is a true carrier-class
device, offering integrated test access.
