Troop 264 Supports Scouting for FoodNovember 11, 2000

On November 11, 2000, Troop 264 participated in the annual National Capital Area Council, Olde MillDistrict support of the national Boy Scouts of America's Scouting for Food program. As usual, the Troop, plusmembers of Explorer Ship (Post) 759 from Ashton, established a food collection point behind the SafewaySupermarket off of Georgia Avenue in Olney. Twenty-five Cub and Boy Scout units canvassed over 12,000homes in the northern part of the Olde Mill District on November 4, handing out bags for food collection. OnNovember 11 th, these bags were collected and brought to the collection point where the troop removed some12,000 individual cans, jars or boxes of food and repacked these items for shipment into some 400 boxes. Theboxes were loaded onto a truck for movement to the Manna Food warehouse in Rockville, Maryland. Thisfood serves a critical need. Manna normally has a two-week or less supply of food at this time of year. Some350 families in the area will use this food to supplement dietary requirements. This food helps the working-people, barely earning enough to survive, over hard times that many people suffer. Cars break down, peopleneed expensive medical care, people find themselves between jobs. If you do not have adequate savings, orinsurance, such disruptions can drive you and your family into poverty. Manna provides food to help peopleget through the rough times and stay off of the welfare rolls. The work of this troop will provide many peoplea happy holiday this year. I salute each of the sixty Scouts and Scouters who participated in this program. This has been our best year since I have taken charge of the program in 1996. Again, well done Scouts!!!!

    Winter Camp-OutBy Kevin Correa

On the weekend of January 5-7, 2001, we are going either to Rocky Gap or Pine Grove Furnace State Park forour annual winter campout. We are trying to get the place that is almost guaranteed snow. It is going to bePatrol cooking. Remember to bring plenty of hot liquids and foods when planning menus. Departure to homewill be at patrols' leisure after breakfast on Sunday. If it is a nice morning, you may want to explore more ofthe park. If you think you will be traveling home around lunchtime you should probably plan on havingmoney for a "McDonalds" break. We will be sledding during the day if it snows. Bring your sleds and anyother things you want to bring for the snow. Don't forget to bring extra clothes. CUT HERE

    BOARD of REVIEW (BOR)

Any scout needing a Board of Review should call Mr.Jackman @ (301-774-1670) no later than two Sundays (8days) before the scheduled Board of Review. Failure togive proper notification will delay your BOR for a month.

If your scout is scheduled for a BOR, he must bring anadult with him. That adult is needed to sit on a BOR foranother scout. This way we can accommodate all scoutsstriving fort advancement.

Scout dress code for BOR will include Class "A" shirt, neckerchief, slide, and scout pants (khaki or black pantscan be substituted). A scout hat is preferred.

    SCOUT SPIRIT for ADVANCEMEN

We all recognize that Scout Spirit is hard to evaluate. Weknow Scout Spirit includes being helpful and cheerful, but it is more than that... it's giving back. In an effort toassist Patrol dads in recognizing Scout Spirit, thefollowing guidelines are offered. Our troop believes thatprior to each advancement, participation in the followingactivities exemplify the essences of Scout Spirit:

    • A minimum of 1 nursing home visit• Participation in at least 1 fundraiser• At least 4 overnight outings per year

    • Good deeds done outside of scouts

The Patrol Dad, not a senior scout, is responsible forsigning off on Scout Spirit prior to your Scoutmaster

    Conference.

    SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCES

BOR for STAR and LIFE SCOUTADVANCEMENTS

While ropes and compasses are provided for youngerranks, by the time you are ready for Star and Lifeadvancement, you should be responsible enough to bringyour own knot rope and compass for your BOR. We arerequiring all scouts who are advancing to Star or Life tobring a knot rope and compass to their BOR.

LIFE and EAGLE SCOUTSas ADVISORY BOR MEMBERS

If you are a Life or Eagle Scout and would like to sit ona Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, or Star BOR, asa "Technical Expert", call Mr. Jackman (301-774-1670).

You would be the fourth person on the Board. While

you wouldn't have a vote, you would have input into the

decision making process and add invaluable knowledgeand insight by asking questions that perhaps scouterswouldn't think to ask. This is a great way to give backto and maintain the quality of your troop.

    Horseback RidingBy Kevin Correa

The Shark Patrol went to look at Elk Mountain Trails for the March 10th horseback riding trip. We went on aone hour ride in a wooded trail and then we road in a scenic pasture where you could see a long way. We are

trying to get them to do the Horsemanship merit badge with us, but we are not sure if they are going to be able

to offer that to us. The three rides that we are considering are a 1-hour mountain trail ride good for beginners, a1-1/2 hour ride through park and wildlife overlooks, and a 3-hour ride on the C&O canal for the early morning.
