Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church

FUTURE SUNDAYS

During this last year of preaching Rev. Dennis Hamilton will be looking back at the best of the best, at least according to comments and requests. Here are two that merit another look. July 14, 2013 at 10:30 AM

“Day Language and Night Language” Rev. Hamilton When Michael Dowd (of “Thank God for Evolution”) went for his ordination in the United Church of Christ he had to articulate how he saw the myths and metaphors of Christianity in the light of day so to speak. He called the former Night Language and the rational, literal understanding of his rather heretical beliefs as Day Language. This Sunday we look again at how our faith embraces this comfortably without the need for a creed at all. By request. July 21, 2013 at 10:30 AM

“The Aliens Are Coming” Revisiting Bodacia Rev. Hamilton (and Sherman Lumley) As congress mucks around debating the immigration issue, in Bodacia, Calamity County Texas, they have seen it in a whole new light. We visit Clarence Leery at his survivalist compound to hear how aliens are a threat to west Texas. Always fun putting a spotlight on humanity’s existential absurdity. July 28, 2013 at 10:30 AM

Lyssa Jenkens (Topic To Be Announced) Our Intern Minister, Lyssa Jenkens returns from her summer travels, but only for one Sunday. Come say hello to her and catch up on her adventures. Please join us!

A Note from the DLRE * By Lauren Daniell * [email protected]

*Sigh* If you’re like me, the sight of school supplies for sale in the stores in early July is not always welcome. “It’s way too early !” I’ll tell myself, “ There’s still so much of summer left!” As you may be aware, I worked as a teacher for over twenty years and the Fourth of July was always the “beginning of the end” of my summer vacation. I didn’t always have summers off, but nevertheless August would always come way too soon. But the truth is, is that planning for the school year begins very early and the school year at Horizon is no exception. Here are ways you can help not only the Horizon Lifespan Religious Education program, but school children in the Metroplex: ● I am filling just a few last teaching positions for the school year. Please consider saying “yes” if I invite you to be a teacher of children or adults ● If you have children or youth in our RE programs, please register them early. Registration will open on August 1st for the 2013-14 school year ● You know all those school supplies for sale? We’re going to sponsor a school supply drive for Metrocrest

Social Services from July 28-August 11 and have a family volunteer day there on August 24th

. Please see

Metrocrest’s announcement in this newsletter for more information. Yours in faith,

Lauren

Leadership Retreat Coming Soon to Horizon Please put August 17, 9:30 to 3:30 pm on your calendar. We are planning a wonderful leadership retreat for all interested members. We hope to get 30 or so participants. The Board and Committee on Ministry will participate, but it is for members who will be our future leaders in particular. There is no obligation associated with the retreat, but we do hope to encourage everyone to discover your leadership style. It will be packed with information on the coming year, calendar, plans, ministerial transitions, Interim Minister Plans, Strategic Plans, but we have also built in the programs that have made Horizon such a great church. It is the healthy church practices that your leadership has incorporated into their culture that keep us healthy. Come learn about your Myers Briggs style and how you fit into the leadership picture. Lunch will be provided.

This is a picture from the Macedonian church the YRUU visited last Sunday - The youth joined in a blessing for the youth of the church. It was a wonderful visit and the YRUU especially enjoyed the church music. It is part of the summer YRUU program that is exploring the beliefs and church experiences of other religions. (Peggy Gill)
