Transcript of 7 TH S CIENCE Topic Blitz! DO NOW!. W HAT FORCES OF NATURE SCULPTED THESE LANDSCAPES ? H OW CAN YOU...
WHAT FORCES OF NATURE SCULPTED THESE LANDSCAPES? HOW CAN YOU TELL?
Wind? Tidal Surge?
Water? Volcanic Eruption?
Heat? Earthquake?
USE THE DATA TABLE TO BUILD A GRAPH What type of graph would be
the best one? Bar? Line? Pie?
What is your independent variable? (What are you testing?)X Axis?
What is your dependent variable?Y Axis? (What are you measuring?)
Create it.
WHY DO WE SEE COLOR?
Light is energy. Each color of the spectrum represents a different wavelength of energy and we see it as a different color. Objects absorb some colors. We don’t see these colors. We see the colors that an object cannot absorb. We see what colors objects reflect! This is what color the object is!
Which color is absorbed? Which is reflected?
WHAT ARE THESE AND WHY ARE THEY NECESSARY?
What would our lives be like without this type of technology?
DIFFERENT SOILS HOLD WATER IN DIFFERENT WAYS.
CLAY is very thick with small particles. It holds water. Water cannot drain well. Plants may not do well in clay soil.
SAND is too loose and has large particles.. Water drains away very quickly. Most plants don’t grow well in sandy soil. Homes and buildings cannot be built on sand. It’s too unstable.
TOP SOIL is rich from dead plant matter. It holds water well and is the best soil for growing plants. It has small and medium particles and doesn’t drain too slowly or too quickly.
WHAT FORMS OF ENERGY ARE SHOWN?SOUND WAVES-
ENERGY OF SOUND
MECHANICAL ENERGY – ENERGY OF MOTION
ELECTRICAL ENERGY HEAT

CHECK OUT THE STAGES IN THE LIFE OF A MOTH
WHAT OTHER INSECTS WOULD YOU EXPECT TO HAVE SIMILAR STAGES OF LIFE??
“pupa” or
“chrysalis”
“caterpillar”
SOIL LAYERS ARE CALLED HORIZONS
TOP SOIL is the top horizon of soil. It is called HORIZON A. It is rich from decaying organic matter. Plants and insects grow and live here. The soil particles are small with few rocks.
HORIZON B is layer underneath topsoil. It is lighter in color because it is not as rich. The nutrients from the topsoil has washed away or has been used by the plants. More rocks, pebbles, and gravel are in Horizon B. There is little animal or insect life in this soil.
HORIZON C is last layer. It is called “bed rock” or “parent material”. It is rocky and poor. There is no plant or animal life in this soil.
STARS•Come in many sizes
•Make own heat and light due to the process of
FUSION
•Get larger as they get older
•The cooler they are the redder in color they are
•The hotter they are the bluer in color they are
•Our sun is a medium sized star with a reddish color.
•Billions of stars in our galaxy—”The Milky Way”
Galaxy
OUR GALAXY IS THE MILKY WAY GALAXYWhat is a galaxy anyway??
Galaxies are groups of billions of stars, dust and gas that revolve around a black hole.
This is a picture of what one arm of our galaxy looks like from the surface of the earth. The gases appear whitish and that is why scientists named our galaxy the Milky way.
WHAT IS A COMET?
“Dirty Snowballs”
•Made of chunks of ice and rock
•Very old—left over from the formation of stars and planets billions of years ago.
IF CELLS DIDN’T DIVIDE COULD ANYTHING GROW?
Cells divide in a process called Mitosis. After mitosis, one single cell becomes two identical cells.
HOW DO CURCUITS WORK?Connect the wires to complete the curcuit. The light bulb will light up because Electricity is allowed to travel from the + end Battery through the wires to the light bulb And back to the – end of the battery.
Light bulb
Battery
Switch “connects” the wires and turns the light on.
Light bulb
Battery
Switch “disconnects” wires. The light is off.
RAIN FORESTS99% of life in this ecosystem lives in the canopy (tree tops) The main thing that keeps populations of rain forest species from getting too high is competition.
What would organisms compete over?
DIFFERENT KINDS OF ROCKIgneous Rock forms when lava or magma cools and solidifies.
Sedimentary Rock forms as smaller pieces of dirt, rock and organic material build up in layers.
Metamorphic Rock is formed when other types of rock undergo tremendous temperatures and pressures.
VICIOUS CYCLE: BURINING FOSSIL FUELS FOR
ENERGY
How has the burning of coal affected pollution levels in the air? Water? Ground? How can we get cleaner energy?
We generate power
largely by burning fossil
fuels like coal, oil and
natural gas.
Our modern lives are
completely dependent upon
consuming energy.
THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
“Throat”
“Voice box”“Wind pipe”
When the diaphragm contracts and
presses upwards it forces air out of your
lungs…EXHALE
When the diaphragm relaxes it makes room and changes the
pressure within your chest. Since the pressure is greater outside of your body, air sucks in through
your nose… INHALE.
TROPHIC LEVELS IN A FOOD CHAIN
Producers / “Autotrophs” make their own food from the sun’s
energy
First Level Consumers / Primary Consumers Eat Producers. “Herbivores”
Second Level / “Secondary” Consumerseat the First Level Consumers &possibly Producers.
“Carnivores” or “Omnivores”
3rd Level Consumers / Tertiary Consumers eat Secondary consumers,
primary consumers & producers. “Omnivores”
Detritivores / “Scavengers” / Decomposers
LAND FEATURES AFFECT CLIMATEDid you know tall mountains help to create deserts?
Did you know that the flat lands in the Center of the USA are perfect breedingGrounds for tornadoes?
Location Location
Location!
The topography of the land
affects wind currents which carry weather and even the direction of
ocean currents.
ALTERNATE FORMS OF ENERGY: PROS AND CONS?

FINDING RANGE, MEAN, MEDIAN, MODEThe range is the difference between
the highest and lowest numbers in
a set. To find the range subtract the smallest value from the largest value in the set.
The mean is often called the average.
To find the mean add up the numbers in the set and then
divide by the number of numbers.
If there is an odd number of data
values then
the median will be the value in the
middle.
If there is an even number of data
values the
median is the mean/average of the
two data values in the middle.
The mode is the value that occurs most often.
If no number is
repeated, there is no
mode.
A) 1, 1, 4, 5, 3, 3, 7, 9, 7, 1, 8
B) 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 17, 5, 6, 4
C) 0, 1, 3, 4, 5, 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9
Find the range, mean, median and mode for each set of data below. First re-write numbers in correct order.
MASS, GRAVITY AND WEIGHT
This rock on Earth weighs 150 lbs and
has a mass of 68 kg.
This same rock weighs 351 lbs on
Jupiter.
Jupiter has much more mass than Earth so gravity
pulls with a greater force
there than it does on Earth.
The rock’s weight changes but its
mass remains the same, 68 kg.
This same rock weighs 9
lbs on Pluto.
Pluto has much less mass so gravity pulls
with a lesser force there than it does on
Earth.
The rock’s weight changes but its mass remains the same,
68 kg.
