foREwoRdFirst of all, a tremendous big thank you to Ron and Terrie Gomboc for again hosting the annual Gomboc Gallery Sculpture Survey, now in its 26th year. Since 1984, students from tertiary institutions across Perth have seized this opportunity to create and install sculptural works suitable for outdoor public exhibition. In 2009, the Gombocs are hosting the works of students from Curtin University of Technology, Edith Cowan University, and the Midland campus of Swan TAFE. For this year’s Survey, the non-acquisitive prize money for the students has increased to $6,000.

Seventy Five works by students are on display indoors and outdoors, and many works are for sale. These emerging artists have worked very hard in the past few months to develop their ideas into goals and from there into well-considered three-dimensional works. In preparation, workshops have been abuzz with a frenzy of activity for several weeks. For most students, this event will be the first exhibition entry on their artist CV and a very proud moment to remember with friends and family. Pick up a catalogue and a map of the sculpture park exhibition and enjoy the indoor and outdoor exhibitions.

In 2004, I was invited to write the foreword for the 21st Sculpture Survey. The range of venues for exhibiting sculpture outdoors in the larger metro region has greatly expanded since then. Ron and Terrie Gomboc have been instrumental in co-facilitating five consecutive Sculpture by the Sea events at Cottesloe (2005-09). Several local artists selected for this competitive beachside exhibition previously gained valuable experience as students participating in a Gomboc Sculpture Survey.

Other recent developments in the Perth region include commissions for permanent works at the Sculpture Park at Edith Cowan University’s Joondalup campus and for Curtin University’s (outdoor) Art Collection. St Georges Cathedral and the City of Perth are currently seeking expressions of interest for major site-specific works. There are also organised tours of the University of Western Australia’s Nedlands campus artworks, the annual City of Melville’s Sculpture Walk at Piney Lakes, as well as temporary outdoor exhibitions, such as the City of Perth’s 3x3 Urban Art project in Forest Chase. In addition, more local councils and developers are commissioning and purchasing works. However, the arts community is continuously engaged in vigorous debate about the merits and foibles of art in relation to public spaces. But whatever the opinion, works need to be maintained, and thank goodness the white and black marble landmark outside the State Library, Gate 2, Coalesce, by the late Akio Makigawa has been restored.

Established in 1982, Gomboc Gallery and Sculpture Park has grown tremendously in reputation and scope. Looking around, we can see from year to year how the Gombocs energize sculptural enterprises both near at hand and at a distance. Gomboc Sculpture Park is a continuous work-in-progress, featuring new and diverse works every year. The Gombocs are also very active in the national and international community, and regularly host artists-in-residence. Currently, Koichi Ogino and Isamu Fujimoto are creating unique stone and wood sculptures. This is the second year that these distinguished international artists have participated in a cultural exchange between Asago Museum and Sculpture Park in Japan and Gomboc Gallery. Other cultural exchanges have included artists from China, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Caledonia, Italy, Slovenia, Germany, Austria, England, and France.

Please enjoy the exhibition. The diversity of works to explore and contemplate is quite astonishing.
