NEWSLETTER 23 Week 3, Term 3 – 28th July, 2015 6pm Mass Sunday, 2nd August Welcome everyone to Catholic Education Week which is an opportunity for us to celebrate and promote our distinctive mission and ethos. As a school we strive to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by encouraging our community to live out the message of Jesus and become compassionate, contributing and life-giving members of society. One of the ways we encourage this at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School is through the Making Jesus Real (MJR) program which encourages students to adopt a positive approach towards others through acts of kindness. This week’s MJR theme for students is ‘Teamwork at home’. The following prayer and other resources are available on the Catholic Education Week 2015 website. Know the presence of God and the presence of each other. Gracious and Awesome God Open our minds May we know you are with us in all we do. Open our minds to know, think and understand. Gracious and Awesome God Open our hearts May we be signs of your love in our world today. Open our hearts to love, appreciate and belong. Gracious and Awesome God Open our hands May we make a difference for others. Open our hands to serve, create and lead. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus our friend and teacher. Amen. (Downloaded from http://www.catholiceducationweek.com.au/ resources on 27/7/2015) Our Catholic Education Week activities include our; Level 3 students leading us in Prayer on Friday’s assembly followed by Open Classes and a lunchtime sausage sizzle, Prep Open Day on Thursday commencing at 9am and a visit by our Level 5 students to Woodbine Lodge from 9:30 to 10:30am. Our Open Classes on Friday will be an opportunity for parents to join their children in class until Brain Break. The sausage sizzle for lunch is ‘free’ with a gold coin donation to support our school Mini Vinnies program. Last Thursday Bishop Michael visited our School. The visit was linked to the celebration of Confirmation with our Parish community. I thank Bishop Michael for the visit and the time he was able to spend sharing stories and discussing his pastoral role with our students. Our Bullarama for 2015 has now been cast into the pages of history. I am continually surprised by the generosity of spirit that exists, within our parents and friends community, to come together to support school events in so many ways. To those people who were able to share their time as a volunteer for the many jobs that needed doing to make the night a success I say, “Thank you and God bless you.” To our sponsors who provided funds or goods to support the event I also say, “Thank you and God bless you.” Our round-up of raffle winners and other prizes can be located in the following pages. Sacramental Program

There was a very special event in Springsure last Thursday night when Bishop Michael presided over our Confirmation celebration. It was a joyous celebration and this flowed over into our shared meal and cake in the Parish hall afterwards. Thank you to our parents, candidates and sponsors for their hard work in being part of our Parish Sacramental Program this year. A special thank you also to the Parish Sacramental Team, Mrs Hoare and Mrs Rohan in supporting the families this year.

Catholic Education Week

When reflecting on Catholic Education week I was contemplating how to share the story of the theme for this year’s celebrations, Engaging Minds, Igniting Hearts and Serving Others. Then a friend sent me an email with the following attachment. I will leave you to reflect on the words of Sr Kym and consider how this motto could become part of your everyday life.

May you continue to find Jesus in your life each day, and may the grace of God be with you.

Engaging Minds, Igniting Hearts, Serving Others

In Catholic Schools, there is a deep commitment to teach and inspire our students about the importance of serving others. Of course, that is what good Christians do…but it doesn’t come easily. As you consider the motto for the forthcoming Catholic Schools Week, other activities have to come first. We shouldn’t just go out and serve: we have to first see and understand, engage our minds, to see what the real needs are. Then we need to serve with lively, ignited, hearts. No-body wants to be served by a grump – that is demeaning.

When we serve with our minds and hearts, we truly give of ourselves. But this doesn’t come naturally or readily. As parents, guardians and teachers of our children, we need to engage their minds to ask questions about what they are trying to do, to go beyond the obvious and ask ‘what is really happening here and what is the best I can offer?’ Then we need to inspire them to act in a way that feels loving. They may need to learn that even when we don’t feel loving, we can act that way and, surprise, surprise, the loving feelings may follow. When we do these things, we are modelling to our children, the best way of serving: with minds, hearts and hands working together in love.

Loving Father, you desire us to serve as best we can. Show me how I can use my mind and heart to show your love in the way I serve others. I ask this in Jesus’ name confident that you will hear me.
