    Lubrication System Features

    The6.4LPowerStrokeDieselusesanoilcoolerthatismountedinthevalleyotheengineundertheoillter.

    Theoillterisacartridgestyleltermountedonthetopotheengineoreaseoservice.Thissystemalsoincorporatesavalvethatdrainstheoiltothepanwhenthelterisremoved.

    Thegerotoroilpumpandoilpressureregulatorarebothlocatedintherontotheenginebehindthevibrationdamperintheirownremoveablealuminumhousing.

    Lubrication System Oil Flow

    Oilisdrawnromtheoilpanthroughthepick-uptube.Theoilisthenroutedthroughapassagecastintotheupperoilpanbeorebeingroutedthroughapassageintheblock,apassageintherontcover,andnallytotheoilpumpinlet.

    Theregulatorvalveutilizesaorce,providedviatheregulatorspring,toapplyapressureequalto65psi.Wheneveroilpressure

    exceedsthisorce,theregulatorvalvewillmovedownwardandallowtheexcesspressuretobleedobackthroughapassagethatroutestheoilbacktotheinletsideothepump.

    Fromtheoilpump,oilisdirectedtotheoilcoolerandthentotheoillter.

    Fromtheoilltertheoilissuppliedtoachamberincorporatingve(5)passages.One(1)istotheturbochargersorlubrication.Two(2)aretotheEOTandEOPsensors.

    Thetwo(2)otherpassagesaretothetappetoilsupplyontherightandletbanks.Thetappetgalleriesalsoprovideoiltothepistoncoolingjets.

    Crossdrillingsootherightbanktappetgallerysupplyoiltothemainbearings.

    Anothercrossdrillingverticallyupromeachmainbearingsuppliesoiltothecamshatbearings.

    Note: This oil supply routing is dierent than the 6.0Land uses dierent bearings which are also placeddierently with respect to the oil holes.

    Pick-up Tube / Oil Aeration

    Thepick-uptubesuppliesoilromtheoilpantotheoilpump.

    Thepick-uptubeissealedtotheupperoilpanutilizingano-ring.Itheo-ringisdamagedormissing,itcouldcauseoilaeration.

    Oil Pressure Regulator

    Theoilpressureregulatorislocatedinthegerotorhousingjusttotheright(whenlookingattheengineromtheront)othegerotoroilpump.

    Theoilpressureregulatoriscalibratedtoopenatpressuresabove65psi.Itshouldbeclosedbelowthatpressure.

    Theregulatorvalveutilizesaorce,providedviatheregulatorspring,toapplyapressureequalto65psi.Wheneveroilpressureexceedsthisorce,theregulatorvalvewillmovedownwardandallowtheexcesspressuretobleedobackthroughapassagethatroutestheoilbacktotheinletsideothepump.

    thenthroughtheoillterbasewhereitenterstheoillterhousing(thereisasmallinletvalveintheoillterbasethattheoilmustpassthroughtokeeptheoilromdrainingoutothelterhousingduringnon-operation).Atthispointtheoilfowsthroughthelter(romtheoutsideotheltertothecenter)whereitiscleaned.

    Note: There is an oil lter bypass valve located at the top othe oil lter stand pipe (plastic tube the oil lter slides over)which will open and allow unltered oil to enter the systemwhenever a pressure dierential o 27 psi is reached.

    Aterbeingcleanedviatheoillter,theoilisroutedthroughtheoillterbaseandintoacavitythathasportstodirecttheoiltotheollwingareas:letandrightoilgalleries,turbochargeroilsupply,andtheEOT&EOPsensors.

    Note: There is a drain valve inside the oil lter base which is heldclosed by the oil lter whenever the oil lter cap is tight. Whenever

    this cap is loosened, the valve is allowed to open and oil will thenescape through this valve, through the oil cooler cover, and thendown through a drilled passage in the crankcase to the oil pan.

    Note: There is an oil cooler bypass valve inside the oilflter base which will open and let uncooled oil bypassthe oil cooler and enter the oil lter housing whenevera pressure dierential o 25 psi is reached.

    Oilfowsromthecrankcasetotheoilpumpviaapassagethroughtheupperoilpan,rontcover,andoilpumphousing.

    Whentheoilpumpisturnedbythecrankshatitcreatesoifowandpushesoilthroughtwopassages.Onepassageistotheoilcoolerandtheotheristhroughtheoilpressureregulatorthentotheoilpumpinlet(thispassageisonly

    usedwhenpressureexceeds65psi).Whentheoilreachesthenumerousrestrictionsthroughouttheengine,pressureisthencreated(pressureistheresistancetofow).

    Allothepassagesromtherontcovertothecrankcasearesealedwitharubbercoatedmetal,onepiecegasket.

    Oil Filter Base

    Theoillterbasecontainsthemountingprovisionsortheoillterhousingandtheoillterstandpipe(whichcontainstheoillterbypassvalve).

    Insidetheoillterhousing,therearetheollowingvalves:Inlet/Antidrainbackvalve,oilcoolerbypassvalve,andtheoillterdrainvalve.

    TheoillterbasealsocontainstheportsortheEOT,EOP,andturbochargeroilsupply.Theseportsareallconnectedwiththecooled/lteredoilpassagedirectlybeneaththem.

    Oil Cooler Cover

    Theoilcoolercoverhaspassagesinittodirectthefowocoolantandoil.

    Oilisroutedromtherontothecrankcasetotherearothehousingwhereitenterstheoilcooler.Theoilpassesromtherearotheoilcoolertotherontothecoolerandiscooledintheprocess.Theoilisthen

    senttotheoillterthroughtheoillterbase.Filteredoilissenttotheoilpassagesinthecrankcase,theturbochargersupplyline,andtheEOT/EOPsensors.

    Thecoolantisdirectedromtherontothecrankcasetotherontotheoilcooler.Itthenpassesthroughtheoilcoolerandcoolstheoil.Asthecoolantexitstherontothecooleritisdirecteddownintothecoolantstreamwhereitre-entersthecrankcasecoolingsystem.

    Note: I the oil cooler is damaged it could causecontamination o the lubrication and cooling systems.

    Theoilpumpisagerotorstylepumpdrivenoothefatsontherontotheenginescrankshat.

    The6.4Loilpumpisheldinitsownremoveablealuminumhousingwhichalsocontainstheregulatorvalve.

    Oilisdrawnintothepumpviathecombinationoatmosphericpressure(appliedtotheoilinthepan)andthelowpressureareathatiscreatedbetweenthegerotorgearsontheinletsideothepumpwhenever

    thepumpisbeingdrivenbythecrankshat. Oncethishappens,theoilwillfowintothepumpand

    thepumpwillcreateagenerousamountooilfow.

    Whentheoilreachesvariousrestrictionthroughouttheengine,pressureiscreated.

    Pressureislimitedviaapressureregulatorvalvelocatedinsidethepumphousing.Wheneverapressureo65psiisreached,theregulatorvalvewillopenandallowpressurizedoiltofowbackthroughareliepassagetotheinletsideothepump,thusregulatingsystempressure.

    Oil Filter

    The6.4LPowerStrokeDieselusesacartridgestyleoillter,locatedonthetopotheengine.

    Whentheoillterisremoved,theoillterhousingdrainvalveisautomaticallyopenedtodrainmostotheoilromthehousing.

    Theoillterelementsnapsintotheoillterlid.

    Note: The oil lter lid should be removed beoredraining the oil rom the oil pan so that the oil candrain rom the lter housing into the oil pan.

    Turbocharger Oil Supply

    Oilissuppliedtotheturbochargersromtheoillterbaseviaasteeloilline,asteelTtting,andtwoseparatesteellinestoeachturbo(thehighpressureturbochargeroilsupplylinehasafexiblelinkinit).

    Theoillinesareconnectedtoeachturbovia

    banjottingsandwashergaskets.Note: The washer gaskets (which are used as a gasketmedium) must be replaced each time the banjo ttings areloosened.

    Turbocharger Oil Drain Tubes

    Oilissuppliedtotheturbochargerstolubricateandcoolthebearings.

    Eachturbochargerhasitsowndrain.Thehighpressureturbochargerusesaremoveabletubewhereasthelowpressureturbochargerutilizesasmallextensiontubeooamachinedpassageintheturbochargerpedestal.

    Thehighpressureturbochargerdraintubeissealedviatwo(2)O-rings,oneateachendothetube.

    Thelowpressureturbochargerdrainextensiontubeissealedviaarubbercoatedmetaltube.

    Oil Pan / Bed Plate

    The6.4LPowerStrokeDieselusesatwopieceoilpan.Thelowerhaliswiderthanthebottomotheenginetoincreasetheoilcapacityothesystem.Duetothiswideroilpan,anupperoilpanisusedtoadaptthelowerpantothebedplate.Theupperpanalsoactsasanoilbafe.

    Theupperpanisboltedtothebedplate.Thebedplatereplacestheindividualmainbearingcaps,resultinginamorerigidbearingretainingsystem.
